"explain this to me. Are you saying the game machines they have are not actually the original games in their original cabinets?"

yes their cabinets are all a bunch of custom made bullshit. they are all emulators except for a 1941 cabinet and something else. all of them probably have over 100-200 ROMs on them. they constantly eat tokens. the buttons are incorrectly color coded to whatever the game has listed in their tutorials, so that's confusing. overall the build quality is just shitty.

boxcar does have an excellent bar, i'll give them that. they need to scrap all the bullshit and invest some cash now to do it right or they are going to be out of business pretty fucking quick.

Speaking of ROM-controlled consoles

What about this premise:

Do you think video poker casinos with funding in the billions use bio-metric recognition software through its security camera system to run through the database to get a gambler's profile?

Then upon determining a unique gaming profile for that person, effectively "rig" a few consoles to maximize gambling returns on that per individual basis?

I.E., newcomer walks into casino, self contained biometry system determines he is newcomer, first few consoles pay out 50, emboldened by winnings spends 100, walks out $50 down for the night

I mean they HAVE to right? How else do they filter out banned people so quickly and compulsive gamblers who have petitioned the legislatures to be on the banned list? They area always watching so why wouldn't they also have remote control of the video consoles?

It sounds like they got some real games in there now and not just emulators. Also I just saw this on facebook...

I am hoping that the one in Cary will receive the Star Wars Battlepod game. If they do, I am camping out.

Last night I went to Box Car to play games after work. The 911 pinball machine is still semi-out of order, the other pinball machine let me play for free a bunch of times in a row, so I am guessing a lot of people probably got coins stuck. Then the X-Men arcade game dropped about $2.00 worth of coins out after I got my coin stuck and pushed return. Some girl also gave me about $2.00 worth of coins. Not too bad of a night, but I do wish the machines worked a little better. I still want them to get a Classic 3 steering wheel Iron Man Ivan Off Road and bubble hockey table and then it would be perfect.

I went in Frankie's last night on my way to Box Car and that place is actually pretty nice, but they don't have any pinball machines, so I went to Box Car. Frankie's is literally 2 minutes from my job, if I don't get the red light. I wish they had a little better lineup.

^Of course. Baja was only released on SNES. The other one was an arcade coin-op though. The trucks are waaaaaay easier to steer with the spinning wheel at the arcades though.

Forget Boxcar and that emulated bullshit. I'm betting they don't own the boards they're emulating, so that shit is at least shady and probably illegal.

^They have some real coin-ops in there too and I am pretty sure they are renting everything from a vendor. That is why they are getting a lot of the things that people are requesting. It sounds like their vendor has a lot of choices.

I don't see why arcades should die, there's still plenty of interactive experiences you can't do on your system at home, plus pinball and retro games et all, but I haven't seen one where I live in a while

They're not. If anything. They're on the upswing.

On that note, I checked out the new Level Up place downtown. Game selection needs some work, but I had a good time.

If arcades are on the upswing, it's because there are so few of them that there's no place to go but up.

I went Friday night and it was full of frat dudes spilling their drinks while acting like they were expecting the lights to go off and for it to turn into a club

liked the selection, but I think I'll go on a weeknight as opposed to a Friday or Saturday night

I've been to Boxcar, and it was an interesting setup, but the long wait times at the bar made me not so happy to be there. Granted it was a First Friday, and I expect every downtown establishment to be busy on First Friday.

I wanna go check out Level Up. Heard really good things about both the food and the game selection.

^ Only 1 good pinball machine, Addams Family. Other one [Playboy] sucks. Very nice Asteroid machine. No Galaga/Pacman or 1942 or Missile Command. Joust was kinda fun. Cruising World? Ok. They've got Centipede if that's your thing, and Donkey Kong. I know NBA Jam and Wrestle Mania are popular...and they have that lame Area 51:Site 4 followup game.

I went out to The Baxter last night. It was really cool to be able to play stuff from my childhood like MvC and Xmen. However, it is not something I think I will find myself doing often.

All in all it was total nerd heaven. Even sold 16 ounce cans of Surge."

I was in Kernersville all week for work, so last night I went to Lost Ark. The Star Trek Pinball machine was jammed, another pinball machine was broke and turned off, the Jurassic Park gun game was out of order and one of the other people tried playing it later and the gun fell apart. It was still pretty cool, but they don't have a ton of games. It wasn't as great as the above poster made it sound.

^That was at Box Car last time I went. I got about 2 dollars worth of coins out of it too because the left controller wasn't working and I pushed coin return which resulted in a lot of coins coming out.

To answer my own question, arcades are not dead. I went to Box Car with a friend tonight and it has really improved since I last went about 6 months ago. They have way more games and about 10 pinball machines instead of just 4. The nice part is they have a bubble hockey table and in my normal tradition I didn't lose a single game. I had a small table when I was younger that was about 2 feet long at most. I only lost about once, or twice on it. I'm just a natural at that game.

I live right by Boxcar and go there all the time. This is very true. Weeknights are much better and they have specials some nights where if you buy a beer they'll give you some free tokens, etc.

Level Up is a lot more chill and they have food.
