well, our defense has been terrible most of the second half... if they didn't miss so many wide open threes and bunnies, we would be losing by 20

I've got money riding on -13 so I'd appreciate it if Abu would stop jacking 3s and we'd stop doing stupid shit in general

We gotta play better against the zone.

Abu looks like a good rebounder, but still quite raw offensively.

Don't care that we are winning, if you're happy with how we've played the last 30 minutes then you're happy with a losing record in the ACC

Damn that sucks if you had this -13. We easily should have won by 20. Hopefully this game will help Abu find his offense in the future. Lots for Gott to use from this game for teaching points.

Considering it was the second game of the season against a half-decent OOC team, not too bad. Definitely need to work on attacking the zone, and Gott said as much after the game ("If I was playing us right now, I'd play zone"). Was not really happy with him leaving Turner, Lacey, and Barber in for so long in the 2nd half... they looked gassed and we probably could have used some length from the Martins defending some of their shooters. That said, Lacey did a good job shutting down their 3 point shooter (who was 6-8 Friday, 1-5 tonight). As long as we are winning these games, I don't really care about the score as much as that we are (hopefully) taking away some valuable lessons from them by facing teams that play different systems.

FWIW, Gottfried also claimed that we practice FT more than anyone else he saw during his time with ESPN.

Quote :

agreed. obviously him leaving dude wide open behind the arc for 3 consecutive trips down the court was not good, and he (rightfully) got chewed out by Gottfried for it. Was disappointed Gott held him out for the rest of the game, though.

We really could have used an upperclass big these last two years. Such bullshit that the ACC rules kept Harrell from coming here but now we have to play him anyway.

Did you not see Caleb snapping back at Gott during that timeout? Then a teammate tried to come up to him and cool him off and he slapped the teammates hand away and mouthed "get the fuck off me". He should have sat the rest of the game and if I was Gott, his ass would be running sprints the entire next practice and be coming to me begging for playing time in the next game. Second game of his career, he leaves a dude wide ass open on consecutive trips and he has the balls to snap off at the coach after he tears into him? Yeah...you got work to do.

I'm starting to develop some concerns with this team, but it's only the second game. Hopefully the bigs will show some development at some point.

Abu is really raw and it really seems like he has a long ways to go after these past 2 games. Real concerning when Anya or someone else gets into foul trouble and he has to play meaningful minutes. He really struggles to get a shot off in the post and takes questionable 3s.

That has been the label on Abu since he was in high school, "raw". The guy is just an explosive athlete with limited basketball skills. He has an incredibly high ceiling, just have to hope the coaches help him develop. Really thought he was getting too much preseason hype from various media sites.

^^ you do realize Anya isnt even the starter

Abu just gets minutes because we are so deep with big men...he is raw but raw also means athletic.

I'll take raw athleticism over slow big finesse guys every day of the week and twice on sunday.

No more of the Horner Weave and Heave type players please.

also, didnt see the Martin thing...Thank God Gott chewed him out. I'm sure he will def get the point by next game.

I didn't realize how raw he was initially. I thought he had a great shot to replace Nard at the 4 by conference play but there is no way that will happen.

I don't think Caleb was "snapping back" at Gott in a negative way, they were just having that coach/player moment where the coach gets after a guy and they're trying to explain themselves in the heat of the moment. It wasn't an attitude problem type of interaction.

Every team is gonna show areas of concern (except maybe when Kentucky had the Brow) at this point in the season. That being said, I am glad that for once it is not backcourt and specifically backcourt depth. Having to rely on ZO to play 29 min so that AJ did not have to play as much is a shitty catch 22. I know that people have their concerns about Dez, but having him come off of the bench for a couple of stretches is actually a good fit for him. The dude knows how to slash his way to the FT line and get points.

Coming in to the season I was worried about the backcourt and thought our frontcourt would be the strength. It's only two games in, but now I have that flipped.

Cat's jumped has become more consistent and Lacey looks great running the point. Turner is Turner and will be a solid scoring option for us this year. Haven't seen much from Lee yet, but you know he'll get his points. Anything the Martin twins can add on the offensive end will just be icing on the cake.

I want to see us try to get Anya more involved in the post. Foul trouble limited him a bit last night, but he had a good basket in the first half and another good move in the 2nd half where he got fouled and almost had the and-1. He should get 3-4 good field goals a night off of straight post-ups. Washington should be able to do the same. Add in putbacks, transition buckets, and straight up hustle plays....and we SHOULD be able to get plenty of points from our big men. Just haven't seen it yet.

I do like our size and athleticism. This should be our best defensive team yet. No weak links (ie. Lewis and Wood). We should set some records in blocks and be able to hold our own on the boards as well.

This team has a good amount of potential. I think we should be dancing and have the ability to go Sweet 16.

I texted a couple friends who were watching at home about how Gott blew up Caleb when he came off the floor. He came out on the court and stomped at Caleb with a face a red as the sidelines of the court. I didn't realize that Caleb snapped back at him, but I did see a team mate pulling him back and talking to him.

Good to see Gott laying down the law. In his first two seasons there wasn't enough of that. He was too much of a friend imo...which is why there was some issues on the team etc which I'm assuming is why we've always had rumors floating around about chemistry.

You think Tom Izzo, Coach K, and Roy don't blow people up? It's how you gain respect and get people to play hard.

I read an article on r/cbb about Izzo going to the opposing teams locker room in their exhibition game and mentoring the team a little bit. He basically told them opposing team that he expected to be challenged more than they delivered. He called out there point guard and asked him how he expected to lead a team with such poor play.

That's more of what this team needs...

I will say that I haven't seen us hustle like we have been this season in a long time.

What a dick.

Just got back from the game. Was pretty encouraged with what I saw, even though we didn't play a great offensive game. Lacey is the real deal. He got into the lane anytime he wanted and is tall enough to shoot over most 2 guards. He and Cat are going to be a dynamic backcourt combo, maybe second best in the conference behind Duke. Cat really has to improve the turnovers when he drives and gets caught in the lane. This was a huge problem for him last year, and he had a couple of these types of turnovers last night.

Nard dog is going to do what he does, solid defense and rebounding. He'll get 6-8 points a game, which is all we need from him. We really need Washington to step up and dominate the high-post. He needs to consistently hit that shot or find the low post cutter. He didnt look very good last night, just forcing way too many shots. I would have liked to see Lacey in that spot for a couple plays.

We have some really good depth, which will win us a bunch of games this year. After watching the Jackson St. game and this game, I think we are definitely an NCAA team. How far we go in the tournament will depend on 3 things:
1) How well Cat and Lacey can play off each other.
2) Washington owning the high post
3) Cat turning the ball over on drives.

It's actually an honor and a privilege to be ripped by a hall of fame coach like Izzo. I guarantee you that kid came out of that more motivated than if his coach had said the same things to him.
