Know this, if I had a neighbor who woke me up at 7-8 am with a lawnmower more than about once and gave me this attitude that some of you have when asked not to do so, I would be working on my motorcycle or fine tuning home theater settings or something until 2-3 am on a regular basis until we became of like mind.

you'd be getting a visit from the cops and a ticket for violating noise ordinances, your neighbor wouldn't

I unfortunately live in a subdivision, but not in any city limits. I seriously doubt there is any county noise ordinance. Not that I'd give a shit, anyway.

This isn't a problem where I live, but if it was, I'd give WAY more of a shit about meting out karma where it's due and fixing the situation with carrots and sticks than I would about a few bucks for a ticket.

Not a problem if my neighbors start mowing at 4am if they wanted to, considering I live about half a mile from my closest neighbor.

If I could somehow talk to the nearby OLF about buzzing my house with Ospreys at all hours of the night, then I'd be set. That's the sound of freedom though, I suppose.

No...at 8 am during the summer, it is about me. I'm not going to kill myself at 10am in 100 degree heat and humidity so you can get a couple extra winks.

I'm a good neighbor 99% of the rest of that time. I keep my house looking awesome so your property value stays up (hence me doing my yard work every weekend while you sleep), I pick up your mail and watch your dogs when you're out of town, I water your window boxes when you forget and ask me to, I raise your neighborhood concerns in the monthly association meeting when you're not there, etc. In the middle of summer on Saturdays, fuck you and your slightly extra sleep. I'm mowing and edging at 8 am when the temperature is bearable and so I can get out to the beach before the lazy masses finish sleeping in and get out there.

8AM is entirely reasonable in the summer, no question. The sun has already been up for hours by 8AM in the summer.

No problem with 9am. My home is so far from others it honestly wouldn't wake me. I try not to put myself in a situation to be angry. Its why I don't live in a modern day subdivision.

I'm 31 and can/will sleep in on Saturdays and Sundays until 10 (or later on occasion). If you're regularly out mowing your lawn during the single digit AM hours you're an inconsiderate dick.

Having dealt with this for many years it rarly bothers me. Only when they are doing ship-shore artillery does it wake me up.

A lawnmower will always wake me up. Different frequencies of sound I guess.

9am is ok to me. Im up at 8am just about everyday now anyway.

If you're 31 and still sleeping in until 10 on Sat/Sun (not due to any strange work schedule) then maybe you should move out of your parents house if you don't like people mowing at 9 AM.

I am up at 8 on weekends but I still think it's inconsiderate to mow that early. 10 is fine. 9:30 is probably the earliest I'd ever personally start mowing.

When I first bought my house and started doing yard work early in the morning, I was still bartending and not getting home the night before until 3/4am-ish.

When you grow up and start having responsible shit to do, you sometimes have to get up earlier in the morning. You should try it, it can be rewarding at times.

I've had a "normal" job for over a decade, but still stay up late most nights. I can't go to sleep early, even if I'm exhausted. Weekend nights are for staying up late and unwinding from the week. People sleep different, I do my best sleeping in the morning. Weekend mornings are for catching up on sleep.. I routinely sleep to 9, and sometimes 10. But I wouldn't fault someone for mowing their grass @ 10am, maybe even 9am. But no earlier.

I imagine if you asked a neighbor "Hey please don't mow at 10am in the morning", the neighbor would be like "sorry, i have my reasons, i'm going to anyways". Then it would be really awkward. How would you work that out?

My little girl sleeps from 8pm to 8am. Anyone making noise during those hours deserves to be shot. Anything after 8am is fair game.

But, in all, it's about being reasonable. For us, we used to have neighbors that would set off fireworks randomly, and not just on the 4th of July. 15 minutes of fireworks at 10:30 means I spend 2 hours trying to calm my baby down and get her back to sleep. Solution -- ask the neighbors to tone it down, or at least give us notice. In turn, do the least noisy things possible the earlier it is. Start with raking and weeding, end with mowing and blowing.

But really, anything after 8/9 on a weekend shouldn't be objectionable.

I'd also like to point out that there's a difference between being annoyed at being woken up by a lawn mower at, say, 9 AM and it actually being rude for your neighbor. My apartment complex does a lot of maintenance and landscaping on Saturdays so it's not really all that unusual for me to be awakened by it on Saturdays at 8:30 or 9 if I've had a late night. It might be slightly annoying...because nobody likes to be woken up if you don't have to be. But I'm not gonna go complain to management about it. Because I feel that's not an unreasonable hour for them to be working. Although I guess that's a little different because it is commercial landscapers doing it...and they're on the clock and working.

So for the people who want to sleep in later on weekends, have you ever tried earplugs or other noise cancelling devices? They probably won't block out the noise if your bedroom is on the first floor and your neighbor mows right outside your bedroom window, but would definitely help otherwise.

I've never understood this reasoning after a whole lifetime of hearing it, and variations of it. Get up early, the day's wasting, all that crap. You realize that people who sleep until 9:00 or 10:00 AM are conscious for the same amount of time as everybody else, right? I have "my whole day ahead of me" regardless of when I wake up. Mankind has the electric light bulb, we aren't slaves to the sun any more. If you wake up at 5:00 AM and go to sleep at 10:00 PM, I don't give you shit for missing stuff that happens from 10:00 PM until 3:00 AM. But if I go to sleep at 3:00 and wake up at 10:00, I'm some kind of lazy asshole who is "missing" part of their day?

Bullet pretty well summed it up for me:

Although I'll go a step farther and say that 9 AM is fine for me anytime, and 8 AM is perfectly reasonable in the summer. And really any time is fine if you use your words and say, "Hey, man, do you mind if I mow in the mornings?" Because I'm gonna say, "Not at all, enjoy."

I figured it wouldn't be a serious issue to get started around nine, but as newer folks in our neighborhood, I didn't wanna be a jerk.

Re: "You 'posed to be up makin breakfass." True, but I'd already been up with the puppy for about four hours.

My grandpa's the type that wouldn't let me call/see my friends before noon on the weekends. "Byrn Stuff, you don't need to be botherin those folks until it's a reasonable time."

I find it almost impossible to nap unless I'm fall down exhausted. I probably nap less than a dozen times a year. And I never fall asleep when I'm not trying. I think I've only fallen asleep while sitting up watching tv maybe twice in my life. I could probably stay awake for days straight if I had a reason to.

^^^^exactly. it might wake me up. and i might not want to be woken up. but i also understand that other people have different priorities than me and that's not really justification for me to be too upset at them if they're cutting grass at a reasonable time.

You can't do yard work in the dark and we are slaves to the sun in the middle of the summer...which is why I do my yardwork early in the morning before my slavemaster is wide awake and beating me with his rays and high humidity.

You also basically agreed with me on what time you mow the lawn, so I don't know exactly what you're arguing here.

I live in a downtown high rise apartment building and I'm not bothered by noise late at night, weekend events, etc. as I always use a fan for white noise to sleep. Thus, I can't imagine early morning yard work posing a threat to my sleep.

Everyone should install giant floodlights so they can mow by artificial sunlight at 3 AM. That won't bother anyone.

qft

since I was very young, my most "productive" (to varying degrees) hours have always been late-night. guess what? some people really ARE night owls.

luckily for me I'm a fairly deep sleeper and most things don't wake me (to the point of not being able to go back to sleep) or bother me that much. that said, this is becoming increasingly less so as I get older, so maybe in 5 years I'll be outside calling the cops on the people mowing at 8am.

I understand completely. My point was more that a person can be productive regardless of when they prefer to be awake, so don't act like a personal preference for a 10:00 AM-3:00 AM day gives a person less "day" to work with than a 5:00 AM - 10:00 PM day. Yeah, I get less actual daylight hours my way, but there's only so much yard work a sane person will do in a day.

Quote :
"You also basically agreed with me on what time you mow the lawn, so I don't know exactly what you're arguing here."

I was arguing against the tone and phrasing suggesting that anybody who is asleep at 10:00 AM on a weekday is lazy/wasting their day/unemployed/living with their parents, and the self-righteous attitude of some of the pro-early-mowing people in this thread. Waking up at the crack of dawn doesn't make you superior, so quit acting like it does. (Not directed at you in particular)

I think most of this "you have your whole day ahead of you" really came to fruition once I bought a house. There's always a project to do and/or errands to run. I like to use my Saturdays to go out and do shit. If I can get my house stuff done early in the morning (obviously yardwork is one of those things, as evidenced by this thread), then I have a good portion of daylight ahead of me to do fun shit in the sun, ie, go to the beach, go out on a boat, paddleboard, ride my bike, go to a football game, eat and drink outside, etc.

The longer I wait to do yardwork, the less time I have to do that fun shit. Lo and behold, I still have time to do fun shit at night as well...but we are a "slave to the sun" if you're talking about doing all the stuff I mentioned above.

I'm with slappy...I am not awake before 8AM on any given day unless I'm traveling for work.

My apartments all the time have people doing yard work at 7:30 in the morning and our windows have zero insulation...so annoying.

I do most of my work at night, so 10AM or later would be an amazing time for peeps to start doing yard work.

Errands and stores that are open? What the fuck kind of stores you got that close when the sun goes down? Even in Africa where people really are slaves to the sun, people keep their shit open at night.

But, OK, look, all of that is fine. You have your preferences for activities, and that's OK. Other people have preferences that may not require them to be out in the sun for the entire day. That's also OK.

What bothers me is this longstanding bullshit rooted in society's idiotic yearning for the pastoral that we default to saying that the guy with the sunlight preference is better and to be deferred to in all matters pertaining to sleep, and the night owl is assumed to be a pale, obese hermit who lives with their parents. It's not even that "night people" have to bend to the will of the "morning people" -- society can't run 24/7, and we inherited the "morning people" schedule from a time when we didn't have a choice; OK, them's the breaks. It's the extent to which the morning crowd takes it as their due and acts with such utter contempt for all other circadian rhythms.

Anyone who isn't like the asshole I just described can walk across the yard to their neighbor and ask them if early morning lawn mowing is an issue, and if it is, they can at least make a cursory attempt to solve the issue. If you think even that much should be unnecessary because "fuck you, you should be up already, your choices aren't my problem," then you're a shitbird.
