"But, there's also a lot of truth in there, too; in order to have a confirmed kill, you have to have a witness present. 160 of his 255 claimed kills had the confirming witnesses required, and that's impressive any way you cut it."

This is the part I don't get. He went into the military, did several tours, killed a bunch of brown people, and lost his life while helping veterans. OK he's a great American dude. We all agree.

But why make him out to be a super hero? Why millions in book sales and a Clint Eastwood film?

Because he punched out someone who hates this country and was disrespecting dead SEALs? Nope. That was a lie.

Because he shot two carjackers, thereby protecting the community? Nope. Another lie.

Because he used his sniper rifle to keep America safe from brown people even on American soil?? Survey says? It's a lie.

So now we have a claim by Chris Kyle that Chris Kyle shot a record number of "savages." And we know Chris Kyle has a bad habit of lying, but oh wait but it's confirmed. And who is making the claim that there was a confirming witness 160 times? The Pentagon? The Navy? No, Chris Kyle here again.

I thought this was good, but not as big of a deal as it was made out to be. This reminded me a lot of how Fury was presented by critics, a good movie, but not the next Saving Private Ryan by a long shot.

I like how so many recent movie threads getting decent replies are on this list, haha:

You're saying that he sold so many books and the movie is doing so well because he punched someone? That wasn't even in the movie, and was less than a paragraph in the book. We don't care who he punched, or if he did it or not. Was a mildly entertaining sidenote.

Two carjackers? Not in the movie or book. Don't care. Keep trying.

What exactly is a lie about him being a SEAL sniper? Why do progressive liberals hate American heroes? Do you hate your country so much that it physically bothers you when someone who is notoriously proud to be an American looks favorably on screen? Does it piss you off that he said America was the best country on the planet and he was going to do everything he could to defend Americans? Do you feel sorry for the people he killed to protect Americans? Chris Kyle killed a bunch of bad guys so that good guys could live - deal with it.

I was referring to the Katrina thing. He claimed to have shot 30 looters while sitting on top of the Superdome.

We know he lied about sniping those 30 people. We know he lied about shooting 2 carjackers.

BUT SURELY he's being honest about the reason he has this book, movie, fame, and self proclaimed moniker "the deadliest sniper in American history": exactly 160 confirmed kills. Surely he didn't lie about that.

So basically ya'll took the equivalent of a nutty email forward (where a marine punches a professor) and turned it into a blockbuster. Congratulations.

And you couldn't care less whether or not it's actually true.

This is why Colbert says "Reality has a well-known liberal bias"

^ You're taking some bar-room bravado, which i'm going to consider is hearsay at this point, and adjusting your character judgement as you see fit?

Now you're questioning the military's method of confirming kills? Do you also want to question how they count sorties? Or any other metric that is on the official record? You actually think this was an elaborate plot for him to get the most kills on record? He planted all of the dead bodies, right?

Why do you think it is acceptable to attempt to assassinate the character of someone who actually was a net positive for this country, unlike the dude in Missouri that you were so up in arms about?

Try thinking outside of your "party" for once, and you might see the world in a different light

What are you talking about? http://youtu.be/bhjHWovwix4 You can't write something libelous in a book, confirm it on a radio station, and then expect that to be considered "bar-room bravado." Regarding the Katrina thing, he said it many times and on tape.

Did the military verify the claim? Haven't heard that. Or are you saying Kyle can speak for them?

being purely objective, and ignoring any kind of personal opinions or "party politics", the movie isn't very good and isn't on par with many other Eastwood directed films. the hook is supposed to be his internal struggle and growth, except the story just doesn't do a very good job of showing it or making the main character sympathetic. Sienna Miller probably does the best job in this film and they barely include her.

I wasn't trying to make that claim exactly, but turns out the answer is yes. It did have a huge impact on sales:

Quote :
"It gets worse for HarperCollins. Despite the tenuous source of the Ventura story, HarperCollins quickly saw it as a publicity gold mine. After Kyle identified “Scruff Face” as Ventura in a radio interview on The Opie & Anthony Show, HarperCollins editor Peter Hubbard wrote in an email that the publicity from the story was “priceless.” HarperCollins publicist Sharon Rosenblum described the Ventura kerfuffle as “hot hot hot,” immediately arranging for Kyle to retell the tale on The O’Reilly Factor. Sales of American Sniper—which, up to that point, were fairly modest—spiked dramatically, apparently in conjunction with interest in the Ventura story. After the O’Reilly appearance, Ventura publicly denied Kyle’s accusations. Yet Rosenblum arranged for Kyle to tell the story again on The Opie & Anthony Show, and HarperCollins printed several new editions of the book that still featured the “Scruff Face” section. (It was finally removed after Ventura won his suit.)"

So torrents are killing the movie industry right? RIGHT??

Wrong

Quote :
"American Sniper starring Bradley Cooper vaulted into nationwide release doubling expectations and shattering records in the process...

$90.2M over the Friday-to-Sunday period, according to studio estimates.

And the best overall weekend gross ever in January was $68.5M from Avatar in 2010"

Quote :
"Now you're questioning the military's method of confirming kills?"

Personally I question the military on everything after WWII (see F35). Who kept count of sniper kills then btw? That is part of American History right? Or does it have to be in a movie?

http://www.dailytech.com/Report+Air+Forces+Spoiled+F35+Superjet+Has+No+Code+to+Shoot+Its+Gun/article37043.htm

+

http://russia-insider.com/en/military/2014/11/04/02-05-14pm/latest_russian_fighter_jet_blows_americas_away

and the Russians made it for 1/4 the price.. Maybe we should have decided between a bomber or fighter jet instead of trying to combine them? It's ok though, we only saw the first one of these in 2006, by 2019 we should have one fully working!! Then it can get shot down by the Su-35. At least it has a GE/Rolls-Royce engine though!

It's a Hollywood movie. They make up inaccuracies and embellishments if they think it makes the film better. Foxcatcher they turned the guy that wrote the book into implying he had a homosexual relationship with Steve Carell's character.

It's not Hollywood embellishments that bother me, it's the fact that they used an "autobiography" full of lies and are passing it off as true and making shit tons of money off of it.

The only way I'd see this movie is if was pirated, because I'm not giving them any of my damn money. Chris Kyle may have been a war hero, but he was also a lying piece of shit.

Still waiting to hear some of these lies from the book. Are you still hung up on the 1 paragraph about punching that old dude? Got anything new for us?

I'm mildly fascinated by the visceral response this movie is generating from the libs. Its almost like they are just now realizing there is a huge portion of the american public that doesn't think the way they do and its breaking their heart

That's the movie industry in a nutshell. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Dux

Bruno Sammartino, who would go on to become the top wrestling star in the northeast for most of the '60s and '70s, had producers come to him to make a movie about his childhood. When he was a kid, he was sickly and hiding with his mother in the mountains of Italy while World War II was going on. His mother every day would risk capture to go get food for them. And it was like this until the Allies had pushed far enough north. His father was already in America and after the war the rest of the family moved to Pennsylvania.

Producers came to him to say they were going to make a movie, great, and in the writing tell him his mother would be portrayed as having an affair in Italy while the war's going on to make it more interesting. It killed the movie deal because he didn't want to insult his mother long deceased that way and said how they came to him for the story, he didn't go to them. Good for him on standing on principle but it cost him a lot of money to do so, now think of everyone that just take the money.
