Whoa, whoa, whoa...At no point did I demonstrate ignorance of how to use order of operations in a simple math problem.I would easily pass your shitty math class, hey now, and I'd be a real know-it-all bitch about it, too.

Had a kid ask me what negative meant today.
10/1/2014 10:02:01 PM
i was going to get defensive but then i realized I derped about multiplication so yea. i deserved thatin my defense i haven't slept like. at all.[Edited on October 1, 2014 at 10:05 PM. Reason : NOT GETTING DEFENSIVE BUT IN MY DEFENSE YOU GUYS]

It's ambiguous but 9 is the best answer
10/1/2014 10:12:32 PM
i suck as a math teacher. when trying to help my kid with 3rd grade math homework i would try to explain it using 7th grade math which was not very helpful.all you got to do is divide both sides of both sides of the equation by 3!

omg this is the most infuriating thread I have ever read

In order for more than one number to be included in the numerator or denominator of a division operation they would need to be placed in parentheses.Like (2+1)/(2*3) vs 2+1/2*3So in this case for the answer to be 1 the equation would have to read 6/(2(1+2))=1[Edited on October 1, 2014 at 11:01 PM. 2008 called. It appears that you did not have permission to create this thread.I'm Krallum and I approved this message.

2008 was a rough year for me, so I'm not surprised. Now I'm just wondering which thing is coming back to bite me.
10/2/2014 6:14:35 PM
^^^I don't care if you use 1/2 or 0.5. Neither is necessary. Why do you want to add an extra step to an easy math problem?

in high school, a friend of mine had a calculator with a broken 7 button. he always just typed in (3+4) for 7. i remember this very same calculator problem giving him trouble one time.

Itt why we need common core math standards...
10/2/2014 9:01:20 PM
^^that video is fucking stupidit says the "Order of Operations" as it is taught in schools would give you 8-2+1 = 5 because PEMDAS says add before you subtractbut when i was taught "order of operations" we were taught that multiplication and division were both done at once from left to right and addition and subtraction were done at once from left to right. if the teacher left that out, then you can't blame order of operations, just the teacher.i mean, i kind of agree with the video's point that it's stupid to teach this mechanical order of operations method that replaces real understanding of how math works with a cookbook recipe for getting the correct answer, but you can't blame PEMDAS just because it wasn't taught right or you fucked it up.[Edited on October 2, 2014 at 9:06 PM. Reason : afd]
10/2/2014 9:06:44 PM
Actually that is a good point. His description of what PEMDAS represents is incorrect.
10/2/2014 9:10:59 PM
my teacher always wrote it out as PE(MD)(AS)the order of operations isn't wrong, it's just not the best way to learn math if you want a true understanding of math.

Did moron argue that "maths" was the proper thing to say? I figured the thread title was in jest. How does this guy earn top 6% income?

I'll admit I'm over valued, but I'll ride that train as long as I can. Also, I would never say math but I see why the British would...

Of course I am...nobody's debating that. But in this case, you're just raking up old skeletons rather than arguing the point in question.Okay, fine. Carry on being [use]El Nachó[/user]. It's always nice running into you.]

Good digging, JeffreyBSG, about the etymology of "mathematics".Don't worry about the Cheese Nacho, he hates the world and everything in it, including himself.
