^^^ and ^^^^ I'm running docker with a bunch of linux containers on my local machine right now, and pretty much every workload I have running in Azure right now is an Ubuntu VM running LAMP stacks (PHP/Python).Microsoft ain't what you think anymore. My point is that people who use Linux *as their host OS* are going to know what models are even worth looking at long ahead of being at a store to buy one, so it's a completely moot point. People who walk in and buy computers at big-box retailers aren't going to be running linux, and people who run linux as their host OS already know what their choices are.

^^ when can I play with docker in windows??
3/26/2015 3:00:37 AM
^Can't say. But I can say it's being very very very actively worked on.

All my PCs except the ASUS transformer have gotten the update saying my free copy of Windows 10 is reserved. I have been using Windows 10 for a month or so on my junkroom computer and it seems to be a huge improvement over Windows 8 and similar enough to Windows 7 not to offend users.

I'm starting to use a laptop that I have more recently and am replacing the 5400rpm drive in it with an SSD. I downloaded the preview but at this point should I just wait for the official version?
6/5/2015 9:13:46 PM
^Honestly yes, I would just wait. The previews at this point are just fixing bugs rather than doing some of the crazy trial features, so you're not getting any real value from starting on the preview now.

So how is MS going to make money off of 10? Are they going to monitor your activity, sell your information, and throw you with targeted ads?
6/13/2015 10:46:29 AM
Windows 8 pc at work has an icon in the system tray that keeps begging me to "reserve" the windows 10 upgrade.
6/13/2015 11:03:44 AM
^^ it's only free at the start, they probably wan't everyone on Windows 10 so they can grow the store
6/13/2015 11:24:27 AM
^ this. They are probably feeling pressure from competing OS. If the lower the upfront cost of ownership, but keep people on their platform they can make money off app sales and recurring subscriptions. Similar to Apple & Googles strategies.I think it is also an attempt to recover from how shitty of a roll out they had with Windows 8. Everyone hated Windows 8 so much it made new computer sales drop, everyone was looking for something they could keep Windows 7 on. Hell I am typing this from Windows 7 now, and I have a Windows 8 DVD laying here on my desk. ]
6/13/2015 2:00:48 PM
I'm still confused as hell as to why they would have thought the windows 8 ui was a remotely good idea for a desktop
6/13/2015 8:04:10 PM
I don't know why people hate on 8.1 so much. Yes the start menu sucks but that can be fixed y buying a 5$ app called Start 8. I think 8.1 is fantastic. It boots really fast and I cannot remember the last time it froze up on me.
6/14/2015 12:17:39 PM
Yeah on my desktop I turned off start on Metro and it goes straight to the desktop. I've never really used the start menu anyway so Windows 8.1 is great.
6/14/2015 6:46:12 PM
Because I shouldn't have to buy third party software to fix the most basic design problemI eventually broke down and did, but that's ridiculous.
6/14/2015 7:40:11 PM
I got that start button app for free IIRC. But yeah windows 8 blows, because of teh start menu.
6/15/2015 12:58:55 AM
I still don't get why you would ever need a start menu...just click the windows button and start typing. You can access any program you want, search settings, search a website, etc. Even in previous versions of Windows I don't think I've ever used the start menu. Seems like an antiquated feature. Create a desktop or taskbar icon or use the Windows search function.
6/15/2015 1:26:18 PM
how to I get the full screen start again? I'm testing Windows 10 on a tablet, and so far I prefer 8.1nevermind, tablet mode brings up full screen instead of menu but it's all vertical scroll now and not pinchable to zoom so it takes longer[Edited on June 25, 2015 at 10:29 AM. Reason : so far on my tablet 8.1 > 10]
6/25/2015 10:24:26 AM
There is no way to hide the taskbar in tablet mode, and Spartan shows a window bar at the top in tablet mode so you lose a lot of, vertical spaceSwiping and charms worked well for tablet, but it looks like they got rid of it completely even in tablet mode. So far I am not impressed at all n tablet, 8.1 is a lot better than this
6/25/2015 11:54:38 AM
Thankfully they make it easy to roll back to 8.1. I probably won't upgrade any tablets to 10 unless they make it more like 8.1 in tablet mode

I used Windows 8 on a computer at a hotel last week and it was really hard to understand. Maybe because the computer was also touchscreen, but I had a hard time picking up how to use it. That's the first time I can remember being confused with how a piece of technology works. Most of the time things seem to be fairly straightforward. Maybe I just expected it to be similar to older versions of Windows.

there is no need to use the touchscreen at all if you don't want to

Anyone know if they fixed per display DPI scaling yet in windows 10? It still doesn't work in Windows 8.1. All our employees who have higher res Dells (3200 by 1800) run them at 1080p so scaling works correctly when docked with 1-2 other monitors.

I have nothing but ♥ for Windows 10.(Remember to uninstall all Stardock "8" type products, esp. Start8, which clashes with the spiffy new Start Menu and makes the taskbar wonky; I hope I can give my licenses for Start8, Decor8, and ModernMix to someone who waited too late to upgrade from Windows 8.1, I'll see who's still on that OS in a year.)

I have an SSD I want to put Windows 10 on and have dual boot. How do I do this without waiting.
7/29/2015 10:34:13 PM
just download it whenever you want. it's out now, why wait?https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
7/30/2015 11:02:30 AM
Thought about waiting and just said fuck it and upgraded. Chrome has a few issues and I had one freeze where I had to do a hard reboot but otherwise nothing bad to say so far.
7/30/2015 11:29:16 AM
Installed this on the office computer, my large format plotter had a driver issue on the day i was supposed to plot out a bunch of stuff for a meeting. oops.
7/30/2015 1:38:43 PM
Chrome seems to work a lot faster for me in 10

Installed W10 on my laptop and so far I like it. Just Edge right now and it feels good. I'll install it on my desktop tomorrow.Any tips and tricks please HOLLATCHABOY.
7/31/2015 7:40:18 PM
Edge needs extensions, I like the browser but don't like the ads
7/31/2015 8:32:26 PM
Been working good on our laptops. Still nervous about rolling it on my desktop though.
7/31/2015 8:34:00 PM
I already miss the bifurcation of the Start menu and the Desktop One thing Edge needs is search bound the right-click; when you highlight a word and right-click it you should be able to enter the word into a search query by choosing it from the drop-down menu. You can turn on full screen start in the personalization settings and get it back if you want
8/1/2015 9:31:58 AM
I'll check into that. Seems like that would have been default. And where if you highlight a link you can chose to open it in a new tab.Thanks.
8/1/2015 11:22:37 AM
It seems like a stupid thing to make default since it was one of the primary complaints people had about 8.1I did full screen start on my tablet before I rolled back, but without the Windows button in the charms menu that I could hit with my right thumb the tablet was a pain to use.organizing the start menu on 10 is also harder than on 8.
8/1/2015 3:02:33 PM
the one thing giving me pause about edge is no addon support. i really want ublock and gprivacy
8/1/2015 8:08:14 PM
It's coming, they said sometime soon

any major perks to upgrading from Win 7? i know there are perks, just wondering if anything that i'd actually utilize on a regular basis. plus i'm start button stubborn]

upgraded my asus n550 to win10 last night. had a few issues with the asus smart gestures at first, but 5 minutes of googling fixed that.
8/2/2015 8:09:03 AM
^^^^^ I was talking about the menu options being default, not full-screen. I hate full-screen anything haha.
8/2/2015 11:16:38 AM
I went through and disabled a majority of the ad/feedback options in the Privacy setting, and now my Photo app doesn't work. Strange. The googles didn't really offer up any suggestions.

So if I upgrade from Windows 7, how do I go about betting Windows 10 back should I decide to reinstall/reformat?

So I've been reading up a good bit lately about Windows 10, and even though I've gone through all 13 of the basic privacy settings and turned most things off, I still have some reservations about my upgrade. I just wonder how much of my use is getting captured and sent somewhere.I mean, it was a free upgrade, and nothing really is free. I'm not using a Microsoft account however, it migrated my local admin account over from Windows 7. I did try to get the photo app again, but apparently I still have to have a Microsoft account to get anything from the MS App store. I'm on the fence about creating one at this point. Am I being too cautious? Also, I find that Mozilla seems significantly slower on 10 than it was on 7. Has anyone else experienced this? I don't notice a faster boot up, but I've had an SSD for 7 for some time, so I've been used to really fast boot times. It sure is purdy tho
