I think everything is due to geography and resources. China is completely isolated from the rest of the world. They are like living in another world. They know nothing about the outside world. The east Asia is like a big cave. Chinese live in that cave for thousands of years.

The main idea of communist party is sharing. Sharing everything, food, house, car, woman, etc. Chinese people are happy about that, so they follow communist party. Therefore, Mao was treated as Jesus during culture revolution period, and the little red book is like bible. Everybody needs to study, recite, and follow the words in their daily lives. They report to Mao morning and night, just like praying.
If you don't visit China, you don't know how poor they are. The national color of China is red. It means poverty, aggressiveness and craziness. China is basically a much bigger version of North Korea, and Mao is actually the Ben Latin of the east Asia.

During Korean War, Mao and Stalin wanted to conquer the whole world. That's pretty much like WWIII to me. And Mao was evil enough at that time to be compared with Ben Latin already.

Luckily US killed his son.

The most evil part for Mao is he killed millions of Chinese people who didn't follow him and those who were rich.

Nowadays, every Chinese wants to get out of his country, including those leaders. Their family members already move to countries like Canada and Australia. They are the only ones remaining in China in their families. They also transfer their money from national banks to some very small countries in Pacific islands to avoid attention.

Even watching NBA is tough for them when here many people even don't bother to do. All the NBA games are played in the dawn/morning/noon in China time. So you can't watch game live during weekdays unless you want to be fired by your boss.
And this is outside the first KFC store in China

I studied abroad in China for a summer in Hangzhou and researched post-communist democratization and the effects of social media and economic liberalization on it. I also went to Shanghai, Beijing, and a bunch of rural towns on the way to places like Yellow Mountain or the Great Wall.

China is awesome and I'd go back in a heartbeat.

I agree with most of the negative things people have said. Chinese people throw food scraps and cigarettes on the floor and don't think twice about it. While others liked the food, I wasn't a fan and anything you see on a US Chinese menu (besides Peking Duck and Kung Pao Chicken) doesn't exist over there. People stink not just like body odor but like human shit. People do piss/shit in parks/streets/etc. Babies even have little flaps on their pants to make it easier. Food sanitation is pretty bad but I just tried not to think about it. They give zero fucks about animals and definitely still eat cat/dog. They don't form lines.

The toilets are squatter style and you can't flush toilet paper so there's just a waste basket full of shit covered tp beside the toilet, and cigarette butts all around on the floor.

You have limited access to American internet sites. Big Brother is definitely watching and the people are keenly aware of it. Most people have very little idea about Tienanmen Square.

The Good Stuff:

- they fucking love Americans. I don't know how many times people came up asking to take pictures with me and the girls would just giggle. If you're tall and/or have blue eyes it's even better. one restaurant I frequented (Hangzhou Wine Center) put me on a billboard to basically say "Americans eat here!!!"

- Everything is dirt fucking cheap. Cabs cost pennies, you can have people clean and cook for you for like $7 a week. Medicine is all over the counter and costs like a dollar for a bottle of anything. Pretty much anything you buy in America that says "Made in China" on it is like a tenth of the price over there (North Face, golf clubs, tennis racquets, bicycles, electronics, etc.)

- They spend tons of money on landscaping and decorations in bigger cities.

- It's close to Australia so you can get Australian wines for cheap

- The history is all in tact for the most part and you can see some ancient shit that's really cool.

- I'm a big fan of green tea, so there was plenty of that.

- The Chinglish signs are hilarious.

- There's a lot more. It's just a culture you have to experience first hand. Truly an amazing place.
