agreed

but really, out of public decency, women should use a cover/sheet/blanket/newspaper/paper/etc

(but still, they can and should breastfeed whenever wherever, pretty much)

Or, out of public decency people shouldn't get bent out of shape because because they think breastfeeding is icky and let mothers do what's best for their children without having to feel like Stripperella.

is it acceptable to change a diaper wherever you want or can we all agree that you should take the baby somewhere to do that?

It was a rebuttal to your argument that the decent thing to do is to cover up while nursing.

There's nothing indecent about boobs, its just a tired puritan argument that really has no logical reason.

do any of you fall into the camp of having an aversion to seeing people's bodily functions in public, especially in restaurants? (current topic included)

I think it depends on where you are. If you're in a restaurant -- not acceptable to change a baby at the table. Please take the baby to the bathroom. If you're in the park -- acceptable to change a baby outside, no need to go to the bathroom. If I'm sitting on my living room floor, acceptable. If I'm in someone else's home -- ask what they prefer. 98% of the time, they're fine with it.

In general - I don't want to expose my baby to anyone else, so I try and change diapers in as guarded a manner as possible. Never know what kind of weirdos are watching.

If a place has provided a good place to change a baby, do it there. If there's no changing table in the bathroom though, I'll usually ask an employee if I can use a bench or table and then make sure its well covered beforehand and wiped down afterwards.

All bets are off outside though, just don't do it where people eat. If you have to, make a good effort to wipe it down.

Yes, its not a catch-all argument. Semen, feces and urine are not something I want to see anywhere.
Eating, saliva, kissing are no problem. Burping and farting are a little rude, but I'm not going to ask you to leave unless you're doing it in a way that affects me.

Well that's their problem.

If I blow my nose at a park, and they find that offensive, its not because I did anything wrong.
I'm not going to walk around with a mask on because someone thinks its disgusting that noses are used for breathing and can create mucus.

most people would definitely find it offensive and gross to blow your nose without at least turning away and covering up

I'm a-okay with it, with two provisos

1. I'm going to at least sneak a look now and then...after all, you're exposing your breasts in public, so you can't really complain if I peek once or thrice. I won't stare shamelessly and grossly, though.

2. If you're fat and nasty, at least try to be somewhat discreet about your public breastfeeding. Don't flaunt your big, disgusting, cellulite-ridden titties anywhere near me. (Admittedly, this is a purely hypothetical point, as I've never actually seen a fat, disgusting woman engage in public breastfeeding to the point where it became at all objectionable.)

But I can walk around with my nose exposed all day and no one gives a shit. I would agree that a farmer's blow is pretty gross and uncalled for, but there's no women advocating to be able to just spray milk all over the place.
If I'm going to be loud and obnoxious about blowing it, then it would be polite to turn away, or do it where I won't bother anyone, but if its just a simple hankerchief to the nose, one soft exhale and a wipe, there's nothing rude about doing that in public.

if two people are talking and one just pulls out a handkerchief and wipes their nose without even trying to turn away, that's still pretty rude unless its obvious that the other person is suffering from a cold or something and can't help it. i'm not sure why that has to have a corollary to breastfeeding, I thought we were talking about something separate.

it can... it's a biological fluid... that being said i'd say the risk of spreading anything ends with anyone not actively sucking on the teat.

I have heard of people using breastmilk to heal stuff. (Not doctors) Haven't tried that yet. Supposedly heals pink eye and ear infections and helps baby acne and cradle cap.

Apparently breast milk doesn't spread most common illnesses but it can transmit AIDS and Hep. C

Keep in mind that this is just opinions. Breastfeeding in public, covered or not, is protected by law. Telling a woman to cover up, stop, leave, go to the bathroom...all that is illegal. "

Wasn't there a heated thread about this a few years ago?

My stance is I have no issues with a woman breast feeding publicly. Although I think it is rude/uncouth if I'm a nice restaurant and the lady at the table in front of me whips out her tips and starts nursing a infant. Although that begs the question of why would anyone bring a baby to a nice restaurant when if it starts to cry it would be even worse.

Breastfeed in public when the baby is hungry. Don't breastfeed to make a point. Cover up or don't cover up, it's up to the mom. I will NEVER tell someone it's inappropriate. I will NEVER tell someone to cover up. I am of the camp that thinks breasts are sexual but they are also a life source for babies, especially if the mom isn't formula feeding. If I ever hear someone tell a mom it's inappropriate and she should cover up, I will encourage that person to shut their mouth and leave the mom alone.

Breastfeeding is good or whatever so I have no problems seeing it in public.

I do occasionally think it's disgusting...anything related to maternity/childbearing/baby stuff can be gross to me. We spend a lot of time concealing the fact that we're animals so it's extra weird to see some lady waddling down the street about to pop--and a baby's gonna come out of her vagina! It's so natural that it's strange.

Anyway, I think we should start a list of people who were not breastfed as babies so we can ridicule them and their mothers. Just cause...that'd be funny to me.

So apparently breast milk may not transmit HIV and may actually kill it.

Breast milk may actually "kill HIV," but if a woman pumps or breast feeds in a restroom, she's risking her baby's health. THERE'S POOP IN THE AIR!

No, sir. It's unsanitary.

The generations of women with less progressive employers and no legal protections should all count themselves lucky that their babies didn't die from their regrettable decision to use the restroom for such things.

Personally, I carry "poop in the air" literature and distribute it among the uneducated few who still engage in this extremely risky practice. There's no documented case of a baby falling ill from it...and I plan to keep it that way.
