That actually answers pretty much all the questions you could have about this case.

The news reports and especially Republicans have been painting this guy as an anti-american ready to jump ship to the Taliban, where it seems like he was battle weary in an incompetent platoon and had witnessed some atrocities, and was pretty disenchanted with war.

So it looks like back in 2012, this was the problem:

Bowe could have been freed 2 years ago, but the Whitehouse held back because they knew Republicans were going to attack them for freeing someone who was being painted as a deserter.

After reading that article, it does now make sense why we got him back. The smear campaign against Bowe is entirely politics, to make Obama look bad.

This is just ridiculous. And while I feel sympathy for this couple, and their family, and especially their baby, it has nothing to do with Bergdahl, and you can't draw a parallel between the two.

Bergdahl was in Afghanistan because we put him there. Yes, it was his choice to walk off the base, but he was ultimately there because of us. That's why, even though I disagree with the manner in which the President acted to bring him back, I don't disagree with bringing him home.

The couple above were there on their own, they knew the risks, and they chose to go anyways. The US can't just go gallivanting around the globe rescuing idiots who get themselves into trouble.

Not any kind of policy reason, but because it would be the role of the US Embassy in Mexico to facilitate his process through that justice system. Not that the President step in guns blazing and remove him from the prison forcefully. But the Embassy could arrange an attorney and work on speeding up the process.
