I went to high school with a guy named Mister, and his father's name was Holly (I heard his father was a big black man that could easily kick your ass, so likely no one made fun of him too much.)The president of Nigeria is Goodluck Jonathan.

I work with a girl named paradise. I don't know if her parents gave it to her or what but she's this roller derby tough girl with rainbow colored hair and the personality that could kick your ass with a single look. Not really my idea of paradise, per se.

It's always been kinda interesting to me how black folks generally are more creative with naming kids than white folks. My first name is David, that's kinda biblical and boring. I want to be called Tyquarius. Does anyone have any insight into the common black people prefixes like LA, SHA, TY, LE, etc? PS - Heaven spelled backwards for a name has always kinda been silly to me.

The name situation is out of control for parents of all backgrounds. I long for the days when you could pop a la- or de- on a name and be done with it. Now it's some sort of creative spelling competition. Olyveah is all set for a lifetime of needlessly spelling her name to people.

I've got a pretty common name that often gets misspelled with an I instead of a Y. When I correct them on the spelling I also correct them on their pronunciation just for fun and add a syllable. "its pronounced burr-why-an"

I'm always disturbed by how many otherwise reasonable teachers I have worked with claim to have personally taught or know someone who has taught the Oranjello and Lemonjello twins. I saw a few of the other more recent urban legend names pop up in this thread, too.http://www.nameoftheyear.com/, on the other hand, has some really entertaining names that made me LOL. Several of them sound like they're straight out of a Key and Peele sketch.[Edited on May 4, 2014 at 2:20 PM. Reason : .]
