Huh, which Death? The protopunk band or the metal band? I guess both could be feasible.

The Death made up of black dudes from Detroit.

Not the Death made up of white dudes from Orlando.

too bad it's now impossible to look at more than a handful of bands in the lineup at a time (except in the poster, of course)

De La Soul has evolved a lot and have moved pretty far away from the happy, sillier hip-hop they did on their first several albums. Do they still perform a lot of their older music, I wonder?

I just watched the documentary on Netflix. What an amazing story. Would be cool if Rough Francis got added to the lineup as well.

But yeah I think that was probably the best music documentary I've ever seen.

Wow, lots of good acts all going thursday night around midnight. I wish a couple of those had been on the friday lineup instead. Friday seems pretty weak by comparison (not counting the city plaza show obviously.)

no kidding... I had War on Drugs, Mutual Benefit, and Lunice all on my list. not fair to have to pick just one out of those.

^^yeah War on Drugs, Reptar, and Mutual Benefit were all very high on my list. I think I'll try to go to Reptar and then make it to War on Drugs asap. VIP should help there, assuming Lincoln Theatre isn't at full capacity by then.

CAM does look pretty decent for Friday night though. Like what I've heard from Gems and Mas Ysa so far.

Sun Kil Moon should be incredible, but it might not be everyone's speed.

I've seen Potty Mouth a number of times, and they're good, but I wouldn't necessarily go out of your way to see them.

Priests, on the other, are similar to Potty Mouth stylistically, but are a phenomenal live band.

my press pass is all worked out and i'm stoked. been researching and getting increasingly excited about the lineup

^^I have a hard time getting past Carissa on Sun Kil Moon's Benji. Is all of his stuff so on the nose and corny?

No - this album is a lot more prose-y from a lyrical standpoint and I think it works really well for this particular record. But then again Benji is one of my favorite records of the year so our opinions may vary widely...however just between proper LPs with Sun Kil Moon, Red House Painters, and under his own name he has written 17 albums I think so it's hard to say how 'all' of his stuff is. I think a lot of it is excellent but ymmv

You can't buy individual club show tickets. They stopped that after year two or three. Closest you can get is buying a one day pass for the night you want to see.

I saw De La Soul -> Strange Faces -> Blanko Basnet (awesome) -> Saint Rich -> The War on Drugs.

Everyone was good. Tops probably goes to War on Drugs and Blanko Basnet. VIP has already been worth it. I never would have made it into War on Drugs without it with the line that was there.

Still deciding what to see for tonight after City Plaza. Half tempted to just stay at CAM until Sun Kil Moon.

Might be the best St. Vincent set I've seen. A tie with Cradle in '12 if anything.

Priests are so fucking good.

Circuit Des Yeux was amazing, but Tir Na Nog was horrendous during her set. So much talking. She should've been at vintage 21.

heard that Sun Kil Moon didn't exactly kil it, but I was too busy seeing better acts like Priests instead. here's Mark Kozelek being an endearing dude (who really should have been scheduled for Fletcher, but still):

Also, What Cheer? Brigade spilling into Martin Street for a singalong was a perfect festival ending.

Going to try to rank the performances I saw:

St. Vincent
Phosphorescent
The War on Drugs
Ryley Walker
Blanko Basnet
De La Soul
Freeman
Saint Rich
Spoon
Loamlands
Alexandra Sauser-Monnig
Strange Faces
Sinners & Saints
Lonnie Walker
Sun Kil Moon

I like Lonnie Walker, but that wasn't their greatest set. They also got cut off mid song for going over. I thought Spoon was good, but they basically just got up there and played. St. Vincent killed it, so I think anyone that followed that was doomed to be underwhelming. Sun Kil Moon was hilariously awkward http://pitchfork.com/news/56588-mark-kozelek-tells-fucking-hillbilly-audience-to-shut-the-fuck-up/. I hate when people talk at shows and wish they'd have shut up too, but he handled it like such a tool. I had never heard of Ryley Walker, but that set was insanely entertaining. I skipped the city plaza show to go to the football game.

I think certain bands demand attention, and it is hard to even want to talk over them. That being said, if you're a musician how do you not understand that 25% of people at your show are probably wasted any given night. Its not an insult. They came to see you (or someone told them to come along), but in reality, get over yourself and let people have fun. If they don't like your music they will leave. I know because it happens all the time to me :^)

My faves were probably Phosphorescent, Circuit Des Yeux (who could teach Sun Kil Moon a thing or two about silencing a bar), and ESMB.

Ed was dope as fuck as always . I think I was standing near/beside vinylbandit. I also made a kind of funny portrait of them before the show.

That night at CAM my friend got blackout, incoherently drunk, so that was no fun. Had to leave after Yvette because I thought he was dead in a random hotel we were not staying at.

I skipped Prince Rama because A) They remind me of a Partywave band from when I lived in Miami and I sadly can't get over it, and B) I live in NY so I can probably see them kind of whenever. Went to Phosphorescent instead and it was truly lovely, and a great way to end the fest. His crowd banter is so endearing and adorable. Ryley Walker seemed really rad but only caught his last couple songs.

I almost never enjoy the main stage acts, but thought Spoon was okay/good and Mastodon might be the first one I've completely liked, despite not being very familiar with them. Death was kind of embarrassing Relief! Relief! Relief! Rock and Roll! Aahh!
