haven't listened to new beck because it was a chore getting stock and i didn't want to cannibalize it

the two songs he played on SNL didn't do anything for me

is it all like that?

i think the rest of it is more like blue moon than wave. the production and arrangements are both great, but it's a follow-up to sea change, so if you aren't into that kind of beck then you probably won't be into this either. i really like it, but i also hope his second record planned for this year goes in a much different direction.

i love sea change

but all the sea change songs are hooky, and those two were certainly not, so i'm skeptical

also, why the fuck is beck the only artist on earth that supposedly works in cycles where records are specific follow-ups to records from ten years earlier? that's not aimed at you ^, because everyone does it, but wtf?

mutations baffled everyone, so midnite vultures was supposed to be the "true follow-up" to odelay, and then mv was even weirder. sea change was too quiet to be a "true follow-up," and before you know it we're talking about guero as a "follow-up" that's eight years and four records later.

p.s. i've never listened to the information

wasn't aware that beck had done the follow-up thing before, but in this case he brought back all the people he recorded sea change with, minus nigel godrich.

morning has a nice hook and sounds a bit like the golden age when it starts out, which is kind of neat i think. waking light is pretty great too. it probably won't be album of the year for me or anything, but i think it's worth your time if you like sea change. the information is also worth listening to if you ever get around to it

^^^ i've always thought if you like mutations you should like certain parts of sea change, so by extension i guess that applies to morning phase as well since it's also like sea change in some places. i dunno. i have a hard time comparing any of his albums.

^ i think both of those tracks and all the others are very good.

surprise new Kid Cudi album out today also. Hopefully its better than his last album, giving it a listen now

Pharrell's new album is great, fyi. There's a new song with Daft Punk on it (Gust of Wind).

^^ more likely it's influenced by the fact that jenn's been working on two synth-based projects for years

Shit. I was thinking the Esso album was coming out this month.

Not only is it not this month, it ain't the next either

Other than the 3 songs on Soundcloud (and shitty live Youtube videos), are any of their other songs on the internet anywhere?

I'll just put this here:

The Hold Steady sounds like The Hold Steady

also..i am really loving this The War on Drugs album. to me, it feels like it's 1/3 Dylan, 1/3 "Darkness" Springsteen, and 1/3 something all it's own. thoughts?

^ i can see that. i've been playing that record a lot lately.

and because his 8 hour ambient interpretation of herman hesse's siddhartha was apparently not enough, billy corgan will be performing “sunday with rumi,” a collection of “4 sonic impressions on poems by the great Sufi mystic” tomorrow afternoon. i didn't think billy corgan could manage to do anything more billy corgan than the siddhartha thing. he's also apparently releasing 2 albums in 2015 that he has described as "guitars, guitars, guitars, and more guitars"

i love billy corgan

the only bummer about that is not seeing them with the incredible amount of noise they were making as two people in the knot/civilian era, and with jenn playing bass there's less room for her tasteful-but-amazing guitar fireworks

they ruleeeeeee

top 10 of the year so far (mostly in order):

1. St. Vincent-St. Vincent
2. Beck-Morning Phase
3. Wye Oak-Shriek
4. Real Estate-Atlas
5. The Hold Steady-Teeth Dreams
6. Lost in the Trees-Past Life
7. Warpaint-Warpaint
8. The War on Drugs-Lost in the Dream
9. Future Islands-Singles
10. Yellow Ostrich-Cosmos

still heavily anticipating the new sharon van etten
