Went to Edmund's Oast last night and it was awesome. Beer selection was great, food was delicious, and the atmosphere and service was top-notch. Only complaint was that it was a little pricey, but I was expecting it with the quality of beers, food, and knowing they put a ton of money into the place. If you're a beer nerd, I think it's a must stop for the weekend.

I went to The Fat Hen and saw the angel oak tree on John's Island. Totally worth it! **thanks jbrick83** also, there was Folly Gras on Folly Beach and the Striped Pig Distillery is totally tits! Do a tour there if you can. The owners are really cool and they make amazing booze.[Edited on February 25, 2014 at 12:36 PM. Reason : ]

Can anyone recommend more things to see/do in Savannah? My gf and I have been to Charleston several times already, but never have spent time in Savannah. We'll be going for two nights (April 16th and 17th) before heading down to check out other places in Florida that weekend into the following week. We'll be staying at Thunderbird Inn (http://www.thethunderbirdinn.com/), and it doesn't look like we'll be very far from most things.

Awesome trip! Hit Xiao Bao Biscuit on the way down Friday followed by checkin at Embassy Suites and then toured the USS Yorktown. Did FIG for dinner and then had some drinks at Closed for Business. Had lunch at HOM Saturday. Wasn't a huge fan of the burger I got but the Mac and Cheese was some of the best I've ever had. My boat tour got cancelled which was fine since the weather was crap. Ended up doing a timeshare presentation for the first time which made the aquarium, boat tour, and carriage ride free the next day. Had Halls for dinner that night which was phenomenal followed by more wine at Bin 152. Went to Magnolias for brunch since it was practically free b/c of the timeshare thing followed by all the aforementioned activities. Had a quick snack and drink at Moe's Crosstown and then headed home. I didn't tour any of the breweries although I did try Holy City and Coast. Wasn't a huge fan of either. I really wanted to try Macintosh and Husk, but just not enough time. Thanks again for all the suggestions!

Nice! Pretty impressive that you were able to get all of that in one weekend.I experienced a "first" this weekend that I will now be recommending (and will cross post it in the running thread) for visitors:I did the "Race and Roast" this Sunday at the Oakland Plantation. It's a 5k that starts at noon. It's basically a trail run that goes around the plantation and a couple ponds. Nice little trail and you finish the straightaway on one of those long dirt roads shaded by huge oak trees (like the driveway in Forrest Gump). Then for the rest of the afternoon you enjoy all you can east oysters, hot dogs, chili, and beer (all included in the price of admission). And it's all set with the plantation in the background and an open field overlooking a pond. I've been to a ton of oyster roasts in Charleston, and these were seriously the biggest and best oysters I've ever had. Just a great way to get in a nice run, in a beautiful setting, eat some great oysters, and get drunk with a good crowd and a good band.I know people love to make a Charleston weekend out of the Bridge Run...but that weekend turns Charleston into a zoo. I think this race is a good way to come to Charleston for the weekend...explore the city and have fun on Friday and Saturday...then end it with a nice 5k and an oyster roast on Sunday (then go home on Monday obviously).I'm officially making this my Charleston Tourism thread now.

Posting in the official jbrick83 Charleston thread. I just got back from a weekend trip.It was our anniversary so we really wanted reservations to a nice place but this was kind of last minute so most of the good places were booked up. We went with Peninsula Grill, which definitely had a "special occasion" vibe in their outside seating so we were pleased with that. The service was great and food wasn't bad but I just didn't feel like you get the value for the dinner. The duck was very good though.I really wish we had been able to go to Fig because we stopped in to eat at the bar and get an appetizer and it was awesome. We waited about 30-40 minutes (bar seating got taken up almost immediately when they opened) for a seat and a table actually opened up. We had the gnocchi and it was incredible. The restaurant had a really nice atmosphere, service was excellent even for two people that were just getting an appetizer, and from the little bit of food we had, I just know the rest of their menu has to be delicious. We really liked Bin 152, great place to enjoy a glass of wine after or before dinner. The bartenders were really helpful here. Bar at Husk was a cool place to have drinks. Poogan's Porch was somewhere my wife just had to go but I wasn't impressed. We spent Saturday morning kayaking at Shem Creek and saw some dolphins so that was fun. A ton of people were out paddleboarding. We went to Sullivan's Beach afterwards for lunch at Poe's Tavern, which we both really enjoyed. And finally, I know Charleston has a ton of brunch spots but we went to Old Village Post House in Mt. Pleasant on Sunday morning and enjoyed it.Don't have any complaints about staying at the Renaissance either, it's in a pretty good location for the shopping and restaurants downtown. Thanks to jbrick83 for all the recommendations, he knows what he's talking about.

bumpwill be in Charleston this weekend. anything i should definitely check out?
2/19/2015 3:25:00 PM
Where are you staying? How long are you staying? What is your schedule like? Do you want places to eat? Monetary restrictions? Want to do outdoor/recreation stuff (although I think the weather is suppose to be shitty)? History stuff?

^ This kid knows what's up. Had a great time thanks to his recommendations.

^^^Every post jbrick83 has posted in this thread (from last year) is still 100% relevant. If you skim his posts in here you will be totally set for a solid weekend.I haven't heard of anything totally unique happening this weekend, but the weather is supposed to shoot back up to the 60s which will make your stay/visit MUCH more enjoyable. My only 2 cents would be to absolutely rent a bike and see downtown that way. AFFORDABIKE gives you combo lock with your bike rental and I just cannot stress enough how ideal bike riding is as a transportation option to see the city and the bridge(s). Parking can be brutal, but downtown Charleston is only 6 square miles big. On a bike you can cover the entire thing in less than an hour, easy. With the historic neighborhoods, its absolutely the ideal way to take in the city - and at your own leisure. Also recommend hitting up the HOLIDAY INN next to the West Ashley bridge. Tallest building in the area with a restaurant/bar on the top floor. You will not get a better view of the low country, and its an amazing perspective. Cannot recommend this enough for a sunset or late afternoon cocktail. Night time doesn't do it justice since you can't really enjoy the un-lit natural landscape (the city looks great lit up, but the Ashley river bend around the peninsula/city is what makes it truly gorgeous). A must see.Enjoy![Edited on February 20, 2015 at 10:35 AM. Reason : .]

Will add a couple new spots that I really like...R Kitchen: Opened last March by an old co-worker of mine. Really small place (maybe 15 seats inside?), but great food for a ridiculous price. Menu changes daily depending local produce and fish that comes in...but its pretty much a set 5 course (medium sized) dinner every night for $25 per person...which is just nuts. He can change certain courses depending on a diner's preference and/or diet restrictions. Coolest thing about it is that its so small you are basically sitting in the kitchen. You see everything that's going on while interacting with the chef. Really neat experience. House bottles of wine are also $25...so the wifey and I easily get in and out for under $100 and an awesome meal...which is pretty much impossible to do in Charleston on a night out. Spacing is limited, so definitely try and call in advance and request a seat at the closest bar.The Park Cafe: Another restaurant opened up by a close friend (groomsman). Still downtown in the Hampton Park area, but a little ways away from the hustle and bustle of Upper King St. Its probably our favorite breakfast/brunch spot in town (definitely recommend for breakfast because there aren't a lot of great breakfast places in town). Great dinner as well, but not centrally located if you're wanting to go out after dinner. I recommend going 30-45 minutes early and taking a scenic walk around Hampton Park before your meal.Leon's Fine Poultry and Oysters: Pretty pricey, but the fried chicken and oyster dishes are awesome. Atmosphere is also really cool (in an old garage/auto shop). Beware...no liquor...just beer and wine. But a good selection nonetheless.

For a bachelorette party... Savannah or Charleston? Which will give us beach with the cheapest/shortest cab ride to/from bars?
3/25/2015 4:24:02 PM
You have to go to Tybee Island if you want to go to the beach while in Savannah and that's about 15 miles away. But i guess that's the same issue with Charleston, you have to go to Folly (or IoP or Sullivan's) if you want to be on the beach. The girls in my social circle go to Savannah all the time. It started with a couple Bachelorette parties and now is kind of their yearly or twice-yearly girls trip. It's legal to walk the streets of Savannah with drinks in hand which is one of the reasons they really like it.]
3/25/2015 4:49:13 PM
Savannah is the shit. I've had way more fun there than in Charleston
3/25/2015 5:13:58 PM
Beaches in Charleston are better and closer to downtown....as well as better beach bars. I'd probably say Savannah for a bachelor party because it's more inlined with getting shitfaced...but Charleston is the bachelorette capital of the South. You can't go out on a weekend night and not run into 20 bachelorette parties.
3/25/2015 6:46:58 PM
So you're saying to go to Savannah to avoid being 1 of 20 bachelorette parties and be in the mix of many bachelor parties?
3/26/2015 10:33:53 AM
Eh...I'm sure Savannah is very similar. I'm just saying that a lot of Bachelorette parties probably go to Charleston for a reason. The beaches are nice and close and there are a ton of places to eat, drink, and shop. And there is plenty of dick in Charleston as well...I've taken down a few bachelorette participants in my single days.I don't know what your budget it, but I know girls that have done the "Girlfriends Getaway" package at the Restoration on King street:http://www.restorationonking.com/packages-ftr.htmlThe place is in a baller location on King Street and the people I talked to said it was ridiculously affordable for all of the benefits you get.I also bartended out on Sullivans Island for a few years and a lot of bachelorette parties would get together and rent a beach house for a weekend. I think there are some good deals out there.[Edited on March 26, 2015 at 11:44 AM. Reason : .]

I'm planning a trip to Charleston and Savannah during the last weekend of April/first weekend of May.Are there any sites or activities that involve a significant amount of time indoors in the case that it rains?
1/7/2016 12:52:13 PM
All of the breweries and distilleries have indoor areas (or are all indoor). The Market is all covered with the exception of crossing small streets....so are horse carriages.Just don't go to the beach and wear a raincoat/carry an umbrella.
1/7/2016 1:12:20 PM
Thanks!
1/7/2016 6:02:08 PM
Jbrick hit me up with some awesome suggestions last time. Thanks again! It rained one day so we did a timeshare thing where we got a free carriage ride, boat ride, aquarium access, and restaurant gift card for about 90 minutes of our time.

I'll be going to Charleston on Sunday and to Savannah on Monday.I was planning on eating at Fat Hen for brunch and at Magnolia's for dinner on Sunday, but a few friends have said that I have to check out Husk. Should I go there for brunch or dinner and would I need a reservation? Also, are there any indoor activities in Savannah in the case that it rains?
4/29/2016 10:15:15 PM
You'll need a reservation for Husk and I doubt you could get one at this point. That place books up about a month in advance. Fat Hen is a good brunch and since you'll be out on John's Island, you should go check out the Angel Oak tree...it's like a billion years old or something.Magnolia's will be fine for dinner. Plenty of other good places though. If I were you, I'd go and try and get a seat at the bar at Edmund's Oast. You could eat at the bar at Husk (separate building beside Husk), its an awesome bar (think ridiculous bourbon list, cocktails and local beers), but has a limited bar menu (really awesome...just small).

It looks like my family will be spending Thanksgiving in Savannah. What should we do? It seems like there are a few options for Thanksgiving dinner but what about the rest of the trip?
10/13/2016 11:09:06 PM
I love Savannah! That place is so romantic and mysterious
10/24/2016 8:58:40 PM
Yes benkingsley almost like a filapino woman that's married to a 64 year old man and lies about it. So romantic and mysterious.
