Another reason you are supposed to aim center of mass is because you are more likely to kill the target.Ask a lawyer how much harder it is to get off the hook for "aggravated assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury" than "murder"sad but trueim still baffled at how the system failed this cop. there are supposed to be stops and checks to prevent police from being affected by the law. madness
10/24/2013 10:32:43 PM
^Not dissagreeing. Center mass simpley gives you a bigger target. They drill that into them so when they are pumped full of adrenaline and scared they don't miss. Not that this guy should have been afraid. I'm not surprised this guy is such a terrible shot. I've shot with many a cop and the majority were mediocre shots at best and tactically abysmal as well. Not knocking them for it. These are perishable skills most of them rarely use or train.

that concerns me when a drawn weapon seems to have become part of the uniform now

Maybe with enough video evidence people will start to realize what shitheads many police are. It's no coincidence that in areas where cops wear cameras there are fewer complaints of unnecessary force and fewer incidents of police misconduct.I also find it insane that there are still members of the public who don't support provisions keeping it or making it legal to record public officials operating in their official capacity.
10/26/2013 9:01:47 PM
I don't understand how you can argue against the video. Did he take steps towards the officers? NoDid he provoke the officers in a threatening manner? NoThe ill man should not have been fired upon. The officer was in the wrong for shooting and even more so for lying. Sounds like the officer had a twitchy finger and was looking for a reason to shoot, not the kind of person who should be armed and entrusted with serving the public.[Edited on October 26, 2013 at 9:11 PM. Makes you wonder how many dozens, perhaps hundreds of other times, rogue cops have gotten away with similar murders and attempted murders because there is no video evidence and no witnesses.
10/26/2013 10:47:39 PM
Perhaps hundreds? Definitely hundreds.Perhaps thousands.

I watched it without sound. Wonder if cop will claim he tried to shoot the tires out. Without hearing what was going on or being said I dont see any huge problems here. Lady tried to run multiple times, cop was assaulted by at least one of the kids. The officer doing the shooting had just arrived on scene so may not have been aware of everything.

http://gawker.com/teen-accused-of-made-up-crime-imprisoned-on-rikers-for-1467590997Is this how the system works? Can I just walk up to someone, point at him, and tell the police (who is with me) that that dude robbed me, and he dude goes to jail without a trial, without an investigation, without evidence? And then after that, no compensation, not even an apology? The American people will stand up one day and overthrow their police state.

No, that is not how the system works. Normally, you pointing someone out would be evidence for a trial. That kid was horribly wronged, and probably has grounds to sue

I saw a 280lb cop slam a 110 lb 50+ year old lady to the floor at a bar over the holiday weekend. Pretty sure he broke her nose as a pool of blood spread as her face hit the floor with the quickness. She was being quite erratic (hammered...probably coked up a bit)...but my 150lb self could have handled her with ease. Officer Fat-Ass will more than likely be out of a job soon.

It's real fucked up what cops are doing to both races...but is it just me or do black bystanders seem to escalate situations by getting in the way of cops and yelling at copies while they are working? Do white people do this? It seems like it is enough to videotape the wrongdoing...yelling simply isn't helping ANYONE in these situations.

Which is really shitty, if anything cops should be held to a higher standard because they should actually know the laws. Granted, I have no idea what that guy was actually doing to get the attention of the cops in the first place, but the way he conducted himself in the video in no way whatsoever deserved to be arrested or tased. I don't know the laws exactly but if a cop comes up to you sitting in a public place breaking no laws and asks you to identify yourself are you required to? If so then I guess that is going to be their excuse here, but still the man isnt being uncooperative with the police or anything there is no need to tase him and then arrest him like that.
9/3/2014 9:29:39 AM
My understanding is that -- at least in traffic law -- you're always obligated to stop and identify yourself.
9/3/2014 9:37:49 AM
True but when in a vehicle you are only "supposed" to be pulled over if you are suspected of violating a law, at least thats how I understand it. I never heard them say what the guy actually did wrong in that video other than not identifying himself when asked.
9/3/2014 9:40:50 AM
In Minnesota, where this took place, there is no Stop and Identify statute on the books. The police can ask, but you aren't required to identify yourself.
9/3/2014 9:42:54 AM
^^^ If you're operating a motor vehicle, you're always required to identify yourself. If you're just walking around in a public area, it varies state by state - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stop_and_identify_statutes]

Thanks, folks. Despite the harassment, it seems like things really escalate when the second officer arrives. Prior to that, officer one just calmly repeated herself. I feel like it's pretty unlikely that anything would happened if he hadn't showed up.
9/3/2014 10:11:59 AM
Yeah so if there is no law saying he has to present ID when asked then unless he was breaking some law before he started the video then that is pretty fucked up.
9/3/2014 10:12:25 AM
I believe the charges of trespassing, disorderly conduct, and obstructing the legal process were dropped against this man. I think... But its been a while since I read this story.I'm guessing those charges were dropped because they would disintegrate in court anyway. But yeah, the damage has been done. This man was tazed and arrested, in front of his kids, for refusing to identify himself to the police....something he wasn't legally required to do in that situation.
