I'm pretty sure that's not the case. Games lagged on 360 near launch but still didn't look anywhere near as good or play as good as later games.

The next COD will probably have no problem hitting 1080p on Xbox

^Yeah that was my point, that no one should think the XBONE can't put out 1080 with the right performance because of the hardware at this early point in the lifecycle, just that it might not be as easy or as much room for imperfect programming as the PS4.

That said MS is putting out a very different architecture with the dual "zones" which is very different than the past Xboxes. PS4 by most accounts has improved their SDKs and isn't doing quite as much outside of the game space so I doubt the learning curve is as much. Now 3~4 years in maybe there really will be games that can only be handled on the PS4 but I doubt we're there yet.

I'm pretty sure the 360 had dual zones, they used eRAM plus regular RAM the XB1 has esRAM and regular RAM.

Right now BF4 is running at 900p on the PS4 and 720p on the XB1. That may change some when the systems come out.

At launch CoD2 and a year later you had Gears, that's a pretty big jump in graphics in a year. The same with PS3, you had Resistance at launch and Uncharted the following year.

Launch games never look as good as games a year or more down the cycle do. I'm pretty sure once developers focus more on the new systems we'll see more of a consistent 1080p output in games. Truth be told I'm more interested in how the games will play and if they are fun more than I am in how they look. Now if there are serious graphic issues yeah that's a problem, but if it's fun is usually my focus.

eDRAM, but yeah, the 360's memory setup was similar to the One's. However, it's on die memory pool was both larger and faster. Not in absolute terms of course, but relative to the rest of the system's hardware and contemporary engine design. These days, with deferred rending being the norm, it's going to be a significant bottleneck that will require trade-offs. Still, I think the disparity at launch speaks more to crappy SDK tools than the larger hardware issues. The gap won't be that large throughout the generation.

I love that I'm a part of the IT world. I fucking hate all the acronyms..lol eDRAM..

I agree with you and the tools. That's the rule for any package that the more you use it the better you get at it.

One thing that I think will be interesting is if orwhen the whole cloud thing will happen. With so many things moving to virtualization you can see the possibilities in going that route. I wonder if the tech is there for it, if developers will shy away from it, or any combination of the two will be its downfall.

Any reason for me to get an Xbone over the PS4? I am a very casual gamer, might buy 2-3 games a year and I don't want to deal with any kinect stuff because I just want to sit in my couch and play a game. Only games I have gotten lately are ones like CoD and GTA V so they seem to be in both, any blockbusters that are system specific?

I found the interface, online features, and controller for the Xbox 360 to be much more enjoyable and simple on the Xbox 360 vs my PS3. The dashboard of the Xbone seems very similar and the online features and controller should be just as good also. That's are the main factors for me... also the CoD clan we have on Xbox is pretty friggin awesome.

I was not a huge fan of the Kinect, but my toddler loves it and it provides the occasional fun with a group of friends. I mostly use it for voice commands on Netflix so I don't have to fiddle with the controller when it is a foot or so out of reach. I'll be keeping my 360 and getting the Xbone on release day, the PS3 has been sold. Unless PS4 does something amazing in the next year or so, I will skip it.

That is real helpful, thanks. Doesn't look like anything to really compel me into the xbox over the ps3. I like my 360 fine but when I play online I don't play with friends so I don't really care about that either.

Anyone know where a ps4 is available for preorder or are all those gone? The inlaws want to get me something for Christmas that we are celebrating at Thanksgiving and this is all I can think of.

Titanfall is the only game in that list I really care about. So, that seals the deal for me but also gives me no reason to buy an XBoxOne at launch.

Killzone (although I've never played it) and drive club maybe. I'm just not really blown away by any of these launch titles for either console. Weak as hell. So I can wait until march at least when Titanfall is released and reassess I suppose. I'm just not willing to spend $60 on a game anymore just for the sake of having something to play.

I am picking up an Xbone over the PS4. There are so many intangibles with the xbox that will outweigh minor differences in resolution. I am actually really excited about the television integration and Kinect control. I think Smartglass is going to be strongly utilized. The new xbox is just a better 'all round platform' in my opinion. I think once the programmers learn how to optimize the games, the resolution issue will fade away. Was seriously on the fence, however. I watched a bunch of the side by side videos of the 1080p PS4 games versus the xbox, and came away unimpressed with the difference.

Think I am still gonna wait till both systems have been out for a few months before I make a decision. I use my ps3 mostly as a bluray player and media streaming device rather than for playing games. This may mean that in the end I have no use for either of these systems until the ps3 dies.

the ps4 does not support DLNA at launch, so don't plan on using it as a media streaming device for awhile

Launch lineups are generally crappy and good games don't start showing up for 6 months or so. Which is why I'm leaning Xbox, because I feel like it has stronger features out if the box considering neither console will have great games.

anyone with a ps4 know what the deal is with their hardware problems? i heard it was an issue with the hdmi port? i have an xbone preordered, but this type of stuff is the only thing that worries me about buying systems at launch.

as i understood from reading online, they're having issues with a small number of PS4s being DOA. i think it's just a YMMV type of thing. i didn't get the impression that there are widespread hardware issues but that obviously may change as more people get them/get some hours in.

Pretty much what Fry said. The HDMI issue seems to be pretty small and had to do with a bent pin. The other issue is the Blue Light of Death and that's where the PS4 powers up, but nothing else happens. So far not too many of that problem has happened. It's occurred right out of the box, when applying the 1.5 patch, or when downloading a game. So no real rhyme or reason to pin down one specific cause for it. The last issue has been a few have had output problems. Not sure why and it's not like the checkerboard problem the 360 had. It's symptoms are a flickering screen and a stuck screen.

All of those types of problems could be chalked up to shipping or production issues. With the bent pics that could be a bad batch of HDMI inputs. The others maybe something was jarred loose during the shipping process. Maybe a few faulty HDDs were missed. I don't see anything specific like the RROD or the YLOD out there.

Might be a little more into it

https://help.ea.com/article/sony-playstation-4-update-1-5-instability

Quote :
"
Sony has released a firmware update for the PlayStation 4 that is required for many features on the console. However, this update also results in stability issues while playing games on the system.

This affects all games on the PS4, including EA titles, causing crashing/freezing and non-responsive connections between the player's console and their TV Screen.

Unfortunately since it's an issue with Sony's firmware, it requires a new update to fix it. Sony is working to resolve the issue as quickly as they can. They will update their System Update page as new versions are made available, and we will keep this page updated as we find out more.

Sold by PS4 last night. It broke about 10 seconds after the guy turned it on. Sony is making good and overnighting him a new one with a free controller.

The more and more I think about it the more I lean Xbone this generation.

I may sell mine on Friday, but even if I do I'll probably be going Xbone in a couple months.

It really depends on what kind of games you play and what you want out of the system. If you like racing sims and FPS, then the Xbone has Halo 5, The Master Chief collection, and several Forza games. If you like fighting games, Street Fighter V will only be on the PS4 and PC (Killer Instinct is exclusive to Xbone though). PS4 also has Bloodborne, Infamous, and Uncharted 4 (in April)

When it comes to multiplatform games, the PS4 version's graphics is almost always better than the Xbone. These articles compare games on a technical level.

Both consoles are without a doubt the most disappointing generation of consoles yet. My Xbone has been collecting dust for quite some time. I'm not sure if I should be more impressed by how much devs got out of the 2005 Xbox 360, or more disappointed with how shitty the Xbone is.

PC Master race.

I hate it when guys sound like old men and are like, "No one makes good music anymore" or "Movies suck nowadays" but I honestly think console games have been trending towards the shitter for years now and there are plenty of people who I think would agree. I can say that 2015 was better than 2014, maybe the worst year ever for gaming. I'm still enjoying new music and new movies and especially new tv shows. I find myself just watching more TV instead of playing games because frankly it's just a higher quality experience. MGS V was the only recent game that had me glued for a few days.

Let's see how the Playstation VR turns out...

Not aware of Xbox doing anything other than a theater-like stream to pc/oculus setup. I assume MS is just focusing on the standalone Hololense augmented reality vs a standard vr headset for gaming.

If you're definitely going to preorder it I'd go with a disc. I can think of a couple retailers offhand that will have the game discounted as a preorder (Amazon if you're Prime, Best Buy if you're a part of their club), plus you can always trade it in later.

amazon has a bad track record of overselling then even people who pre-ordered have to wait for a backordered game or may even have their order cancelled
