The trailer one looks like 5th one from the left on the bottom row.So was that Mothra in the Asian trailer?? (btw...I really don't know any Godzilla characters...I don't think I've watched any of the movies all the way through...I only know Godzilla and Mothra).
4/29/2014 10:43:56 AM
That is the new Godzilla. Here's a link to the pic, so you can read the names and heights of each one.http://mightymega.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/kaiju_size_comparison_chart_full.jpg
4/29/2014 10:51:14 AM
^^The other monster he is fighting in this one is not Mothera, apparently it is a new one never before seen, called Muto[Edited on April 29, 2014 at 10:54 AM. Reason : $$$]
4/29/2014 10:53:50 AM
^^^ you mean the one that says Godzilla (2014) under it?? ^ from my very limited knowledge, muto is not the proper name of a kaiju, but rather a kaiju type or species. not sure why nobody is speculating that it's Rodan.
4/29/2014 11:07:26 AM
I did speculate that it was Rodan on page 1, but I have since heard that the production has stated that this is a brand new one. Of course it could be a new Star Trek Khan situation and they are just tying to throw us off
4/29/2014 11:11:55 AM
i wants a copy of that imax poster.mmmm.
4/29/2014 12:03:47 PM
Just now got around to watching the new trailer that BEU linked to above, Jesus Christ, I was already pumped for this movie but that shit blew me away
4/29/2014 12:41:16 PM
My theater hiatus is definitely ending for this although it will probably start back after i see it until Godzilla 2: Nuclear Boogaloo comes out

bump for tonightquestion for the Godzilla fans -- Why is Godzilla so pissed off and destroying stuff all the time? I only have a limited knowledge of the Godzilla history. All I know is he was a regular lizard that was exposed to some crazy radiation due to atomic testing in the Pacific which caused him to grow giant. Every lizard I've ever seen just kinda sits there for like a few hours looking at stuff and eating a cricket every now and then. Did the radiation just make him go crazy or what?
5/15/2014 10:59:37 AM
If I can channel my 8 year old self.... I recall that he was drawn to electricity, he "attacked" cities by simply trying to get to power lines.
5/15/2014 11:24:14 AM
Haven't been to the movies since November & just bought IMAX tickets for the 7pm showing tonight!
5/15/2014 11:45:15 AM
This article describes the 'why' pretty well:http://www.wired.com/2014/05/godzilla-director-gareth-edwards/Looks like this Godzilla is attracted to Radiation.
5/15/2014 11:53:00 AM
Just got back. May see it again, very well done IMO. They change his origin slightly, but that was the most id enjoyed watching a movie in a while.
5/16/2014 12:20:15 AM
^ interesting. I thought the movie as a whole was pretty bad minus the 10 minutes of Godzilla being absolutely awesome.Plus, the characters which the trailers suggest are the main characters are not the main characters (they're actually not in a whole lot of the movie). The actual main-ish (human) character is barely seen in the trailers. The build up and teases for Godzilla are mostly done well so you're pretty excited when he does show up in full glory (though it's very short lived and more is saved for later). But there is lot of the human plot between the teases and actual action, and it's full of stupid shit, it's extremely predictable, it's often boring, and then it's got some more stupid. And it's not just the characters being stupid. Actually, that doesn't happen too much. It's a lot more of the "that would never ever happen like that" stupid (which is fine to some extent, but it's non-stop).I'd love to see some of the Godzilla scenes again. But I will probably never watch this movie from start to finish again (at least not if I'm lucky).[Edited on May 16, 2014 at 4:18 AM. Reason : does not doesn't]

Godzilla (2014) >>>> Godzilla (1998)Godzilla (1998) soundtrack >>>>>>> Godzilla (2014) soundtrackDid anyone have people clap in the theater? During my showtime, they did on two separate occasions (those who saw it can probably figure out which scenes) and at the end.[Edited on May 16, 2014 at 8:24 AM. Reason : ]
5/16/2014 8:24:07 AM
no clapping, but you could definitely tell that a lot of people in the theater got excited/amped up at the same time on a couple of occasions.
5/16/2014 8:27:35 AM
I grew up watching all the old Japanese films in elementary school and loved those movies - still think I've got a ton of them stored away somewhere at my parent's house on VHS. Went back and tried to watch one on Netflix a few weeks back and couldn't - wow those are tough to watch now. I thought this one was very well done though - yeah the human stuff was pretty predictable, but I thought the acting was pretty good and did a decent enough job of keeping you interested before/in-between the fight scenes. I think more than half the people in the Imax theatre I was in clapped when he first used the fire (I thought the use of that was done pretty perfectly as well - most of the Godzilla scenes in the film were done pretty perfectly to me).

One thing that bothered me (minor detail):Dr. Ichiro Serizawa (Ken Watanabe) had a watch that stopped ticking when the Hiroshima bomb was dropped. When asked about it, he said it was his father's. If that's the case, his character would be over 70 years old.
5/16/2014 1:04:34 PM
^Not necessarily. His dad could have been kinda old when he was born. Say his dad was like 17 when the bomb was dropped in 1945, he would have been mid-40s in the 1970s. If Serizawa was born around that time, he'd be in his mid-40s now. Unlikely, but not impossible. Also, did you guys catch the subtle reference to Mothra? When the main dude and his dad went back to there old house there was a shot with an aquarium in the foreground with what looked like a cacoon hanging inside. At the bottom of the aquarium there was something that said [what I assume was] "Mother" but the "er" was cut off and an "ra" was written there. Also also, Bryan Cranston went full Heisenberg when they had him in the interrogation room.

^Jamiroquai and Rage Against the Machine had great songs on it!I don't think the Wallflowers rendition of that David Bowie song was that bad either.
5/16/2014 2:22:35 PM
it certainly wasn't that good. they completely changed the order of the verses
5/16/2014 2:55:51 PM
[possible spoilers below]I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a monster movie, not The Brothers Karamazov, Mansfield Park, Henry V, or A Man for all Seasons. One solecism was the reference to NATO "taking over" by the Navy Captain (if I heard right). USPACOM would have been correct albeit less recognizable as NATO has no jurisdiction in the Pacific.Anyone else have a Men in Black flashback vis-a-vis the eggs? :-)But my favorite clip was the "dropping the head."
5/16/2014 3:22:37 PM
Perhaps I wrongly assumed that his father perished in the Hiroshima bombing. Carry on.
5/16/2014 4:23:53 PM
^ JP, I think the general presumption is that Dr. Serizawa the Elder was alive in the mid-50's during the initial Godzilla "event." But, sure, your point is well taken.

5/17/2014 1:11:00 PM
^ Well, I can't speak to your Batman flicks as I didn't see them. I find the vast majority of what passes for so-called "profound" and "intelligent" and "challenging" character and dialog nowadays pretty damned lame and superficial. I was entertained by and enjoyed Godzilla.
5/17/2014 2:10:00 PM
i might go to this tomorrow, is it worth paying the extra for IMAX?
5/17/2014 2:49:05 PM
^ Never seen IMAX so can't help ... hopefully others will opine. I enjoyed the regular showing, but, as noted above in this thread, this is the first movie I've seen in a theatre in over a decade! Duro: maybe another way to express the point is simply to say that I am glad that Godzilla didn't try to be "clever" or, "profound," or, heaven forbid, "relevant," and fail (as, IMO so many do).
5/17/2014 4:15:44 PM
I get what you're saying there, and I agree. And I'm not saying that "it's nothing profound". I don't want it to "try to be clever" either. I just want it to not to be stupid. I wish I could have fast forwarded through A LOT of the movie. Instead, I had to shake my head at how stupid and contrived some things were and wait for the awesome scenes (which amounted to maybe 15 minutes of the movie).Trust me, I LOVE some movies that are as far from profound/clever/whatever as they get. So when I say "stupid", I don't mean silly and outlandish. I mean all of the contrived ways they kept Ford in the story, and the fact that they even tried to. They could have got rid of a lot of that. And the movie probably could have been close to 30 minutes shorter.[Edited on May 17, 2014 at 6:37 PM. Reason : .]
5/17/2014 6:33:10 PM
Apparently my brother saw it today, texted me that it was "meh". We usually have the same taste so I'll wait till it hits the internet.
5/17/2014 11:23:16 PM
Good movie, could have done with less Ford and more of the Asian scientist. The monster scenes were pretty fucking epic, Godzilla looked really cool.If you're going to see it in the theater do IMAX.
5/18/2014 12:21:48 AM
I liked it, but where the hell was Godzooky?
5/18/2014 11:23:15 PM
Pretty much the worst movie I've seen in a theater. The entire movie is a steaming pile of shit. The acting is terrible, the characters aren't in any way compelling, the plot holes are numerous, it performs a leading character bait-and-switch to a character you could not feasibly give less of a shit about, and there are numerous scientific, military, cultural, and anachronistic inaccuracies. To top it all off, there's barely any Godzilla time.I've been waiting for this for months, and I was sorely disappointed. I saw it in IMAX. My suggestion would be to not see it at all.[Edited on May 19, 2014 at 7:28 AM. Reason : .]
5/19/2014 7:27:08 AM
^That's pretty close to the reviews I heard from two friends who saw it. I will be passing on this one.
5/19/2014 8:00:07 AM
Saw it yesterday in Imax. Thought it was very good, not great but still very good. I really enjoyed the beginning scenes with the background info, and then of course the ending showdown in San Fran. The whole middle hour though was definitely a bit lacking, and a lot of the dialogue was way too cheesy and telegraphed. Overall though, I give it 8 or of 10

Can we go back to how GreatGazoo ain't seen all of LotR now?
5/22/2014 3:03:01 PM
So is it worth the extra for IMAX? I keep seeing people say its the only way to see it, but they didnt film any of the movie in IMAX, so I cant help but think "whats the point"? Just for the big screen?
5/22/2014 3:59:16 PM
^ because a lot people don't realize that imax is more than a big screen.I would say that if you are going to spend money in a theater and don't have a theater near by with decent sized screens and a good sound system but do have a legitimate imax, it may be worth seeing at an imax. But if you have a theater nearby that you think is pretty decent for blockbuster type movies, I think it would be fine.Disclaimer: I haven't seen it in imax, only 2D at crossroads. But then again, I'm betting anyone saying that "imax is the only way to see it" hasn't seen it any other way.
