What's so essential about the Forest Service?

Concerning the VA:
Quote :
"Most services offered through the Department of Veterans Affairs will continue because lawmakers approve money one year in advance for the VA's health programs. Veterans would still be able to visit hospitals for inpatient care, get mental health counseling at vet centers or get prescriptions filled at VA health clinics. Operators would still staff the crisis hotline and claims workers would still process payments to cover disability and pension benefits."

"The Grain Inspection Packers and Stockyards Administration (inspects food imports)"

Are you trolling? Those jobs are paid by user fees and will continue to operate.

Whats important about the forest service? forest fires, particularly this time of year.

The VA department will continue to provide services, but not disability payments. They can only last about a week or two processing payments, after that its fuck you.

And GIPSA is shutdown per their website. well, per their website before it just said this
http://www.usda.gov/documents/usda-gipsa-shutdown-plan.pdf

That's the entire usda.gov domain - http://www.usda.gov/

Quote :
"27. Would food safety inspections continue? Mostly. The Food Safety and Inspection Service would continue all safety-related activities. The Grain Inspection, Packers and Stockyards Administration would continue inspections to the extent they're paid by user fees, "but inability to investigate alleged violations could hamper corrective action in the long term and could have an immediate impact on members of industry." The Food and Drug Administration would limit its activities but continue to monitor recalls and conduct investigations."

Don't assume too much by a website being down

"How exactly do you figure republicans are to blame here? Obama is going to get a bill that funds the government, and he's going to veto it. I don't see how the blame can lie anywhere else but at the top."

It's the republican's fault because they're demanding changes to the president's signature piece of legislation by adding non-starters to a simple 6 week funding bill.

Look, Obamacare is the law. It has been since 2009. It's not going away. The president is not going to allow it to be repealed or refunded or delayed. It was passed through the constitutionally mandated legislative process. It was litigated in 2012 and was upheld as constitutional. The republicans ran a 2012 presidential campaign with a key platform tenant of repeal/replace...AND LOST. Moreover, democrats held the senate and gained house seats.

There is no doubt that republicans are to blame. They have continued to refuse to accept that they lost the debate, lost the legal challenges, and lost the last election. If they want to change the law, they should do so the same way all other laws come to pass. Convince the electorate your ideas are better, get elected, draft a bill, and pass it. Their refusal to accept their failure to do this is what has led to their hostage-taking approach to the CR.

well that's not what their site used to say

Well saying "it is law" does not really mean shit when this administration decides it is not going to enforce other laws on the books (i.e. immigration laws).

Oh my bad, I thought we were all well aware that we're talking about the individual mandate delay that the republicans keep attaching to the CR and that the president explicitly does not want nor is it feasible. It funds the program for christ's sake. Sorry for not spelling that out you fucking pedant.

I made that post before the bill was killed in the senate the second and third time. I do think though, that maybe if the senate would have talked through maybe some of the issues that the house had with the bill, maybe something could've been worked out. Both sides refusal to come to a consensus has gotten us to where we are now, with this partial shutdown.

This is 100% the democrats fault. They are doubling down on this legislation that nobody (except the uninformed obama worshipers) (hipsters) wants. Republicans are trying to make sure that the economy (and health care industry) survives and you people are just stroking the obama cock without question.

And the senate didn't even bother to come in over the weekend to work this shit out before the "shut down" happened.

Hey, I'll respond to your troll bait! These are only positions essential the continuing immediate function of the government. My position and some of my friends who are also furloughed are engineering jobs which in my case involves creating drawing sets, interpreting building codes, creating project specifications, creating cost estimates, and providing engineering support during the execution of the project. My group is essential to keeping the facilities operating long-term, however if we aren't at work today nothing is going to burn down. If they just got rid of us, though, they'd have to start abandoning their facilities piece by piece as a lot of what we do is repair work (e.g. this roof is collapsing we need to analyze and replace it; this brick wall is crumbling, we need to figure out why, fix it, and stop it; this pump broke down and we kind of need it in three months, so get us an answer on whether that's safe or possible and then fix it at any cost).

But you were just trolling, not actually curious about what they meant by "non-essential worker".

While I dont argue that this is basically true (kudos) that doesn't necessarily mean its right.

This is whats wrong with politics today, or rather the soapbox everyone feels they need to stand on. All that matters is winning no matter the cost. Philosophically you guys have it easy; pulling everyone's heart strings and throwing things out there like Republicans want to kill the old and the poor.

In case you havent noticed the government is going to have about $30 in the bank in a little over 2 weeks.

So yeah, sorry, but the old and the poor can eat a dick for a hot second while the rest of us try and patch this sinking ship.

Or we can be liberal and all go down in the most politically correct way possible.

So lets see how brilliant/mature the average left-leaning hack truly is.

Imagine for a second Democrats took control of the House today, and pretend you're Nancy Pelosi.

Lay out your grand plans for the rest of the month.

Show us the bright light at the end of the non-Republican tunnel.

i'd throw out this conservative privatization bullshit (ACA) entirely, and i'd start nationalized healthcare. most of my cuts would be to defense spending.

dt, do you truly trust our govnernment with the full responsibility of your health care? Do you honestly think that the government will always have your best interets at heart when it comes to your health? It is hard for me to fathom that they would be able to get it right.

They can't even get the IT infrastructure in place to make sure launch day goes without a hitch.

i'm sorry, i thought that in this pointless philosophical exercise you wanted to know what my dream would be. if you are talking about in reality, i would have compromised for a single-payer plan back before ACA was a law. my reality now is that i would not be wasting time trying to repeal, delay, or defund ACA.

its launch day and the website has more discreet users trying to use it than the medicaid site ever received. its not a surprise that the exchange website would have problems, and that people might not understand it at first, which is why the first open enrollment period is open for months. ACA doesn't change the amount of input the ACA has in regards to my health decisions, and I'm not sure why you think they would make worse decisions than a private insurance company even if they did.

i think that rjrmfel thinks that ACA is an insurance (or maybe even healthcare?) that is administered by the government. its not.

in nationalized healthcare, or in a single payer system, the government is still not making your medical decisions

(and even if the government was making my decisions, they would probably be no worse than what a profit motivated private insurance or healthcare company would make)
