why do people think it is okay to cut off my 'car space' lead when it is stop and go traffic? I did not leave that space for you jackass, I have it as a buffer so I don't have to keep slamming my brakes like I just had to because you decided the lane I was in was moving an iota faster.

LEFT LANE IS FOR PASSING ONLY. It's a fact. There's even signs that say it on some highways. And you can get ticketed for it in some states. Look it up.

yeah, cats are known for slipping on stationary objects and well-polished cars are scientifically proven to be more slippery than ice

makes complete sense

In North Carolina, slower vehicles keep to the right and the left lane is for whatever the fuck you want it to be for. I have this argument with my husband who is from out of state all the time. He's finally had to accept that in NC you can drive in the left lane as much as you want, not just pass.

unfortunately its not the law in NC unless you are under the speed limit

Quote :
"§ 20-146. Drive on right side of highway; exceptions.
(a) Upon all highways of sufficient width a vehicle shall be driven upon the right half of the highway except as follows:
(1) When overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction under the rules governing such movement;
(2) When an obstruction exists making it necessary to drive to the left of the center of the highway; provided, any person so doing shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles traveling in the proper direction upon the unobstructed portion of the highway within such distance as to constitute an immediate hazard;
(3) Upon a highway divided into three marked lanes for traffic under the rules applicable thereon; or
(4) Upon a highway designated and signposted for one-way traffic.
(b) Upon all highways any vehicle proceeding at less than the legal maximum speed limit shall be driven in the right-hand lane then available for thru traffic, or as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the highway, except when overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction or when preparing for a left turn.
(c) Upon any highway having four or more lanes for moving traffic and providing for two-way movement of traffic, no vehicle shall be driven to the left of the centerline of the highway, except when authorized by official traffic-control devices designating certain lanes to the left side of the center of the highway for use by traffic not otherwise permitted to use such lanes or except as permitted under subsection (a)(2) hereof.
(d) Whenever any street has been divided into two or more clearly marked lanes for traffic, the following rules in addition to all others consistent herewith shall apply.
(1) A vehicle shall be driven as nearly as practicable entirely within a single lane and shall not be moved from such lane until the driver has first ascertained that such movement can be made with safety.
(2) Upon a street which is divided into three or more lanes and provides for the two-way movement of traffic, a vehicle shall not be driven in the center lane except when overtaking and passing another vehicle traveling in the same direction when such center lane is clear of traffic within a safe distance, or in the preparation for making a left turn or where such center lane is at the time allocated exclusively to traffic moving in the same direction that the vehicle is proceeding and such allocation is designated by official traffic-control device.
(3) Official traffic-control devices may be erected directing specified traffic to use a designated lane or designating those lanes to be used by traffic moving in a particular direction regardless of the center of the street and drivers of vehicles shall obey the direction of every such device.
(4) Official traffic-control devices may be installed prohibiting the changing of lanes on sections of streets, and drivers of vehicles shall obey the directions of every such device.
(e) Notwithstanding any other provisions of this section, when appropriate signs have been posted, it shall be unlawful for any person to operate a motor vehicle over and upon the inside lane, next to the median of any dual-lane highway at a speed less than the posted speed limit when the operation of said motor vehicle over and upon said inside lane shall impede the steady flow of traffic except when preparing for a left turn. "Appropriate signs" as used herein shall be construed as including "Slower Traffic Keep Right" or designations of similar import. (1937, c. 407, s. 108; 1965, c. 678, s. 2; 1973, c. 1330, s. 3; 1975, c. 593; 1985, c. 764, s. 25; 1985 (Reg. Sess., 1986), c. 852, s. 17; 2001-487, s. 11.)"

As someone who does a lot of driving from DC to NC, I have determined it is so they can yap/text on their phone and not have to worry about changing lanes back and forth.

I wish this law would come to VA/NC...

Quote :
"Kansas' new "Right Lane Law," which went into effect July 1, makes it illegal to drive in the far left lane of multi-lane highways except when passing or turning left or when instructed to do so by traffic-control devices or officers. The law is designed to reduce road rage and prevent motorists from trying risky maneuvers, says Trooper Mark Engholm of the Kansas Highway Patrol."

http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/nation/2009-08-18-bad-drivers_N.htm

I wonder how much we could save on road expansion and time if people would use the roads correctly?

Can I add people that think because they flip their turn signal on gives them the right to put their car in whatever hole they can find? They act like your supposed to jump out of the way because they have a signal on.

y'all motherfuckers can't drive if the left hand lane is just the passing lane to you. not everyone wants to spend their whole trip jumping in and out of lanes just to keep good traffic flow, which lane swapping does NOT encourage.

tossing a butt... meh it's leaves and cotton but the whole "on fire" thing bugs me

cats aren't quite the attack risk that dogs are and a dusty cat footprint on a person's car doesn't actually destroy the car

In the 2006 International Coastal Cleanup, the number of individual cigarettes and cigarette butts collected amounted to 24.7% of the total number of garbage items collected, over twice as many items as any other category"

Packs of roving crotch rockets that won't let cars pass them while they do dangerous manuvers and pop wheelies on 440 at 1am causing traffic to brake.

I love how people are quoting laws and road signs as gospel. I have a question for the same people:

how important is this sign to you?

I don't give a shit what the law is. Not properly utilizing the passing lane isn't against the law everywhere, but it's definitely contrary to how a multilane road is designed to work in all 50 states and around the world. That isn't just my opinion. You can't "respectfully disagree" and act like that's just like, my opinion, man. You are fucking wrong and you're fucking it up if you drive in the passing lane when you aren't passing people.

if I'm passing a car by going 75mph and you want to pass them doing 95mph, I'm not going to get over no matter how hard you ride my bumper. If you think the smart thing to do is pass me on the right, I will be that jackass that speeds up and then slows down the minute you get stuck behind the car in front of you.

Considering this is about the 50th thread about this topic by Dukie, I'm convinced that he's never lived anywhere with heavy interstate traffic. Otherwise, he'd understand just how unrealistic left hand passing lane only laws are.

i ride the left lane until someone needs to get by, then I move over because where I am, doing 7-9mph over puts you in the 95th percentile for speeders

Duke, you're making it sound like you merge right at first chance every time you finish a pass, whether the next car you'll pass is a 1/2 mile ahead, or 200' (and no traffic wanting to pass you from behind)

I don't care if you're going 35 or 135-I won't tailgate you if you're passing. I also don't care if you're going 35 or 135-I will ride your ass if you aren't passing and I want to pass.

Unless it's a parking lot or close to it, it's even MORE important to do business the right way when there's heavy traffic.

Oh, and I've lived in Raleigh, northern Virginia (bad in and of itself, not to mention driving in DC), near Seattle (drove in Seattle all the time). I've driven completely across the country twice, once in a 26' box truck pulling a trailer, and the other time pulling a 28' enclosed trailer. I've driven in Canada, I've driven in Europe, I've driven in Asia, I've driven on racetracks, I've driven in small towns, I've driven in huge cities. I drive probably about 30,000 miles per year. Get the fuck out of here with that weak shit about me being the one not knowing what he's talking about when it comes to cars and driving.

No, of course not. If there is nobody up ahead to pass, I move back over as soon as I can. If there are other cars up ahead, I stay left until I pass them all, not moving back to the right only to change lanes to the left again in a 1/4 mile--IF there is nobody behind me in the left lane. If there is someone behind me in the left lane, I'll move over as soon as I reasonably can, but that's balanced with the fact that I'm fine as long as I'm passing people. If there's a quarter mile gap, I'll move over and let you by, then move back over. On the other hand, I'm not going to slow down and squeeze my way into right lane traffic that I was seconds away from passing just because you want to pass them faster than I do. That's absurd.
