http://news.yahoo.com/asiana-says-pilot-crashed-plane-training-010133596.html

The pilot in charge of landing had a business-week's worth of experience with the plane and had never landed at SFO in it.

The media still continues to hammer the idea that the ILS being out of operation somehow contributed to the crash. From all accounts the conditions were about as good as they get in SF and certainly within VMC limits. Any pilot in charge of a 777 should know how to perform a standard straight-in visual approach. End of story.

The airline's chief executive said they will beef up their simulation training.

I wonder what it feels like to wreck $200 million worth of machinery and kill 2 people and then you just get off work and go home...

the NTSB confirmation is on the NTSB website. a summer intern confirmed the names, so the report is real.

SHOULD; but clearly Fucked that one up.

So quite a few of the reservists I work with in Corpus are commercial pilots. Some of them have worked with Korean pilots via simulators or common training, and they all said the same things. (Forgive me, this has some racial generalizations)

(1) They [Korean pilots] are all fantastic with systems knowledge and automation. As a general rule they can tell you more about the avionics (including auto-throttles, and autopilot), and mechanical systems on the plane than most of the maintainers.
(2) They have a tough time speaking up when the senior pilot is wrong. [stereotype] Authority is a strong point in their culture and telling the guy next to you he's off profile isn't really socially acceptable[/stereotype]
(3) Quite a few of them just fail at basic piloting skills. IE: They understand the book procedure very well, but have a hard time applying the information when it does not clearly fit into a known situation. Also, they apparently suck at crosswind landings. (heard this from two different sources independently)

IMO this crash boils down to (1) The ILS was out so they couldn't couple the autopilot to fly the approach. (2) The junior pilot was unfamiliar with the sight-picture on a visual approach in the 777 and the senior pilot was unfamiliar with SFO specifically. (3) When the aircraft got below GS both pilots were okay with simply raising the nose attitude vice adding power. (leading to decreasing airspeed) [Basic piloting skills!!!] (4) The late recognition of impending stall, leading to late power addition and not enough time for engine spool-up to successfully go around.

Yeah, that's no-shit day-1 stuff. I can't for the life of me figure out how they fucked this up.

This is a pure tragedy. Those poor kids are funded by their parents. They choose to do a transfer in South Korea b/c the ticket will be much cheaper.

Chinese parents put high expectation on their children. They work hard to save some money for funding them.

If that barrier wasn't there, their incompetence probably would have mostly worked out.

If the barrier was taller, their incompetence could have resulted in dozens, if not hundreds of deaths.

There are some pretty good jokes in this thread that apparently have fallen on deaf ears.

So to all of you making humor, thank you.

what are you supposed to do once your tail is dragging in water other than full throttling it out of there? (I can't see the barrier for shit in the video.. I see a plane dragging its tail, going nose up, then slamming back down)

you apply power before that point. they waited too long to apply power, and thrust is not instant.

They didn't have nearly enough airspeed to effect a change in altitude by raising the nose when they did. In fact, raising the nose made it worse. That's piloting 101.

Pitch/trim for airspeed, power for altitude. You need to know that in order to solo a Cessna, let alone captain a 777.

^^^

No one knows the distances and dimensions involved here, but there is definitely a possibility that if they hadn't raised the nose, the front or middle underside of the plane would have hit/grazed the barrier. If that had happened, the body count would be much higher. This is assuming that if they had not raised the nose, they would have been low enough to hit the barrier with the front of the plane. Of course, if they weren't that low, they would have cleared the barrier and yes, the situation would have been better than it turned out to be due to raising the nose. But no one knows if they could have cleared the barrier or not without raising the nose, I think that requires some complex calculations and educated guesses.

I am not a pilot. Judging by the animation it doesn't seem like they did any sort of maneuver besides a standard landing just way short of target. And they got lucky as hell they weren't even shorter. It's like the crew didn't even realize they were in trouble.

No, it was even worse than landing short...they were not only way low, but way slow, and then on top of that, arguably applied the wrong inputs to fix it (though it's possible that OEP's point has validity.)
