That will be awesome when you get into a wreck in the middle of I-40 and can't pull your car onto the shoulder.
Or when you hit a bear/bear cub and have to sit next to an injured animal with a possibly angry mother right beside you.
Or when a group of people try to jack you and you bounce off a car/pole/person trying to get away.
Or....

The last thing we need is more of this nanny state bullshit. I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume this was a quickly formed thought that you've wiped away after applying a bit of logic.

^^^ Have you ever seen what people do after they get in a wreck on 40..or any other road. They just leave their cars sitting in the damn road anyway. No worries hopefully this car has onstar so the NSA can just hack in and get the crash records.

My roommate was there. The deceased girl landed quite a ways away, the injured girl was laying in the crosswalk... Leads me to think they were crossing in an appropriate location.

How stupid can you be to run a chick over, and park your car in a public parking lot?

WTF is wrong with people like this, atleast put a car cover on it.

Lots of vehicles, maybe even most vehicles, do have something quite similar that shuts off the fuel delivery system in the event of an impact or rollover. Helpful so that the fuel pump does not keep running if you happened to get in an really bad accident. But if it were sensitive enough to know you just hit a 110lb sack of taters stumbling through an intersection, then it would make it really difficult to drive a 3500lb car down a rough road like Hillsborough St.

Pedestrian safety in Europe is much more "advanced", for years they have been trying to build cars that have airbags that come out at the base of the windscreen in case of situations exactly like this.

True. I know Ford has had this since the 80's. It takes a pretty solid hit to trigger it. If the car is drivable and the airbags don't deploy you probably won't set it off.

Well it does vary, but I do believe airbag deployment usually is based on how many of the SRS sensors are triggered AND vehicle speed. For example, lets say a car has 3 SRS sensors. One in the center console, one in each front corner. In order to deploy the airbags, usually at least two out of three have to be triggered. In modern vehicles the vehicle speed sensor would most likely have to indicate a certain speed as well, you would NOT want your airbag deploying in your face unless you absolutely needed it, and encountering such a situation sitting in a stationary car would be extremely rare. Additionally, these days there are safeguards in place like weight sensors in the passenger seats that tell the SRS system if anyone is even in the seat- obviously if not, then airbag deployment would not be needed. Most vehicles now also have seat belt pretensioners that will actually tighten the seatbelt to pull you back into the seat a split second before the airbag hits you in the face. Vehicles with side impact airbags often have sensors that know if you have taken an incorrect seating position like leaning on the door panel.

*no engineering degree, or training in this specific area, but I do spent a LOT of time in/around wrecked vehicles

white-knighting implies the defender believes he will get in the woman's pants.

not sure that applies in this case unless we have some necrophiles up in here.

how dare people attempt to be decent human beings.

They also have a much different legal and cultural approach to pedestrian safety. America is somewhat unique amongst its peers in its attitude of "if you step out into the road illegally you deserve to die." In many European countries there is a presumption of liability on the motorist if they hit a more vulnerable user. Additionally, drivers licensing exams are much more rigorous and there are usually significant components on safely sharing the road with pedestrians, bicyclists, etc. The auto lobby here has become such an unstoppable force that it's hard to get traction on similar things here.

This is surprising, actually. I typically think of America as being on the victim's side (to a ridiculous degree.) If you spill hot coffee on your vagina, you're a victim of restaurantuers who serve their coffee too hot and can sue for $2 million. If your kid fails 2nd grade, he's a victim of poor-quality teaching (because of course he can't deserve to fail; that's why "No Child Left Behind.") If you go online and lose all your $$$ playing poker, you're merely a victim of your gambling addiction; that's why online poker is illegal, to protect degenerate gamblers.

It's actually kind of refreshing to encounter an issue on which America says "Tough shit, individual; you should have looked both ways."

I generally feel bad for the person who gets hit by a car, but not for a drunk person stumbling into traffic on a majorly busy street. As far as I'm concerned, that girl Darwin-ed herself.

Also, I keep reading this thread title as "Girl Plowed... over at East Village tonight" and am expecting it to have totally different content.

It's weird. This happens to drunk bums all the time. And it could have happened to me last night.
I dunno...I've always thought of it as a freak accident...don't really think there's a need to assign blame. And I usually love assigning blame.

I love how not one news report is reporting on what they were doing at 1 am, or if there was alcohol involved. As usual when is a white person that dies the news sees no reason to blame the victim.

Im surprised to see him charged with felony hit/run given the eyewitness statment... expected maybe leaving the scene and invol man or veh. man? Wheres our tww legal team? Although, the driver has a prior DWI conviction, and was DWOL... that could be a factor.

listen, Crede, you're in here swinging a sword you don't know how to use

if you say "victim-blaming" one more time I swear to fucking Christ I'm going to rape you

getting hit by a car isn't something that goes unreported because there's a social stigma attached to getting hit by a car

therefore there is no goddamn reason for anyone to downplay the victim's culpability if there is any

Well the guy has been in jail since August of 2013 but has not been convicted of anything yet. Justice is being served...just very slowly.
