I heard the used game fee was a false rumor. If not how would that work out with game rentals. Do kids still do the game rentals?

^^ I've been at work, TWW is blocked, I had to use my phone over 3g to make the thread and the 3g in my area is crappy

Cant wait to see all the 'great deals' for an "Xbox One" that show up on Ebay.

[Edited on May 21, 2013 at 5:32 PM. Reason : I've only bought a couple of used games for my xbox, but I rent from redbox fairly often]

Quote :
"But what if you want to bring a game disc to a friend's house and play there? You'll have to pay a fee—and not just some sort of activation fee, but the actual price of that game—in order to use a game's code on a friend's account. Think of it like a new game, Harrison says.

"The bits that are on that disc, you can give it to your friend and they can install it on an Xbox One," he said. "They would then have to purchase the right to play that game through Xbox Live."

"They would be paying the same price we paid, or less?" we asked.

"Let’s assume it’s a new game, so the answer is yes, it will be the same price," Harrison said."

That's pretty off-putting. I love being able to take my games with me and play with my friends. Hell, I'm the advisor of my school's video game club, and we all bring in games for our gaming sessions. This would seem to take some of the community aspect out of games. I mean things like PAX's Console Freeplay won't work without numerous unique IDs. While I get that the point is for MS to control the used markets and such, it just seems so anti-consumer.

maybe they'll allow you to transfer the ownership through Xbox live, so it's only playable on one console at any given time

lol, they stopped doing that like a year and a half ago. Haven't brought it back yet, the assholes.

There are literally 2 of those a year in the entire country. For every other get together, you can just bring your discs and log into the console with your live account. (or bring your own console).

I only mentioned PAX as an example of a video game lending library. My friends and I do something similar with a compiled spreadsheet of the games we all own.

"Just take your console with you" kind of misses the point.

You could just log into your account if it's tied to your account and not the account and Xbox serial number.

anyhow, the used game fee is a great idea and hopefully it murders retail sales for good. the game trading system will be better and w/out retail overhead sales would be easier. slicing $20 off a $60 game would probably amaze most contards. and then if they were smart enough they'll throw in back catalogue sales during holidays for cheap cheap cheap then they'd just be printing money. like throwing 2-3 year old games on there for $5 for people who never played them or sold them off and want to play them again.

its like they're finally wising up to the ownage that is the steam model

problem with the digital trade in is who sets the prices and what level of competition there is. I'm not expecting they let you just sell to whoever it just is probably going to be a trade to Msoft.

I don't do much in the way of preowned so not really a dealbreaker for me but if you just look at it as we had these things and now we don't and then it doesn't feel like you're getting enough in return to justify an upgrade.

Saw this on Reddit. I know the USA is Microsoft's primary demographic but all this TV stuff is really not that attractive to foreign audiences:

I don't get why people are making definitive statements about which one they are going to buy (if either) right now when we don't know that much about either of them.

I mean it's not like they are available for pre-order yet anyway.

I think it's because you can already see what they are focused on.

PS4 = games
XBOX1 = entertainment box

I loved the 360, but if I am jumping in the next generation so far PS4 has my vote.

Microsoft seems more focused on overall entertainment system than games but surely people aren't surprised they didn't say much about games with E3 right around the corner, right?

Microsoft said they are going to allow you to trade games and have a used game market, they said they will detail soon.

and i don't know what you mean by subscription, paying for Live? Because that's not new, and judging by the popularity of it, its clear that most people accept it as the cost to not have to use PSN.

I feel like as far as used games go, people are confused by the whole if you take a disk to your friends' house you have to pay money to use it on their xbox live account. There's going to be something to alow you to trade in games (so you don't own it anymore) but if you aren't trading in then it costs full price to play it with a friend's account (IE just an easy way for them to buy a copy).

you can just sign in on your account at a friends house anyway.

perhaps im an old man, but I rather like the move to an entertainment box. in the last 2-3 years ive played some light kinect games (dance central) and halo 4...that's about it. otherwise it is a netflix box.

yeah as a member of the pc gaming master race, consoles have never been appealing to me, but if someone finally made a media center device that wasn't a pain in the ass or missing features i'd buy one in a heartbeat. owning the living room is gonna be critical and Microsoft knows it, even if this doesn't seem that impressive at first glance.

if they could replace cable settop boxes with xbones and have cable cos provide xbones w/ cable subscription Microsoft would be bringing their platform to a much wider audience than the mt dew and doritos crowd. I mean lets face it even they're gonna get bored with the latest rehashes of cod and madden so Microsoft needs a wider audience.

if cable cos went iptv then Microsoft could even upsell cable services right on the xbone homepage or inside other apps. "tired of waiting months and even years for your favorite shows to pop up on Netflix? switch to time warner cable tv on demand and watch new episodes of <favorite show determined by usage habits> right now! Click here to start your 30 day free trial! Cancel any time!"

the advertising metrics would be amazing. not only would you have data on what people watch but face recognition to figure out whos watching what. then you can target ads at those people instead of the useless shotgun approach of current tv advertising.

not to mention app sales to go with the platform. like think about an exercise application that uses Kinect to monitor form and heart rate and all that jazz. or for diagnosing medical conditions remotely. the mandated Kinect means its probably the first widely available teleconference system that wont be attached to shitty tv firmware. there are all kinds of non-gaming possibilities that are for more interesting than traditional contard fare.

I'm a huge Xbox fan but so far I'm not at all interested in Xbox One. All they marketed was a bunch of features I really don't care about. I wasn't impressed with this generation of Kinect and I am afraid the new generation probably will not be anything special to me either. The whole used game thing has me concerned, since I'm a member of an online game trading community. Depending on how much the fee to install a used game would be a big deciding factor. At the moment depending on the new game line up I don't think I will be buy a Xbox One. Personally I am still happy with the current gen consoles.

atleast both sides are pcs this round. eliminating the development headache of dumb shit like cell and ppc should make everything better. since theres more than 256mb of ram and multiple cores it means they'll also start using the piles of gigarams and cpu we've had on pcs forever. plus everything is guaranteed to run better on pc since both sides are using 2 year old amd garbage.

I'd think that the largest competitor to the next generation is the current generation of consoles. What does the up and coming generation really offer? So far it seems like the vast majority of the changes only benefit the game publishers, not the consumer. The next generation of gaming, the one that only corporation suits asked for.

See how long it takes to get from power-on to playing a game or Netflix and then explain how speeding that up and allowing me to multitask only benefits game publishers

After you explain how forcing customers to phone home to play a game and charging fees for used games benefits customers?

Speeding up something the console already does is fairly insignificant when compared to changing the whole model of ownership, at least IMO.

I mean I can still pop in Madden '12 and play it 10 years from now provided the console is still operational. In the future they're going to shut off access to Madden '12 after a year or two in an effort to get you to buy the new version.

Maybe I'm being too cynical here, but I suspect the reason for all the tight lips about used game policies, always-on and so forth is that they have multiple possible policies in mind, and they're waiting to see exactly how much outrage the speculation inspires. That way, they can gauge just how onerous of a policy they can get away with.

Fuck this system and fuck Microsoft.

This sums up by feelings on the first Xbox: http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=xbox_suckit

I'm on my third 360 right now (the first two dying via RROD). The first time I sent my system in they tried to make me pay 100 dollars to have it repaired. The 360 interface is shitty, sloppy, and full of advertisements for things I don't give a shit about. They charge for fucking online services that both other systems offer for free. They originally charged 100 dollars for a goddamn WiFi adapter (which was fucking BUILT-IN to both other systems). I can't play half of my XBLA games offline because Microsoft won't update my fucking licenses for the games I bought on systems that died. Now they are pulling this shit with used games, the new Kinect, and the daily check-in. I'm sick of their greed, bullshit, and arrogance. You can take your uninspired shooters, sports games, Kinect, and Illumiroom. I'm done with you motherfuckers.

Fuck you Microsoft. I'm never getting another one of your fucking systems ever again. It's because of shit like this that you guys are no longer on top. It's shit like this that's why nobody wants to use your stupid fucking operating system, your stupid fucking internet browser, your stupid fucking smart phones, and hopefully now your stupid fucking game systems.
