to slow down the transfer epidemic, the NCAA should prohibit transfers from practicing or using the team workout facilities

thoughts?

While I hate the increase of transfers I don't think there is really anything you can do to combat it. It is merely a reflection of a society in which people simply want things handed to them without hard work or sacrifice.

On the James Curle podcast this week Lutz said that it used to be when recruiting that the kids were the only ones that had illusions of grandeur and the parents were grounded. He said now the parents are just as bad as the kids.

the transfer process should be made easier for players

if a coach can make an immediate split on a team with no impediments or repercussions, then the players should get the same opportunity; fuck the sitting out a year rule

Will never happen but something I thought about as a potential plan:

Sit 2 years on transfer, but don't lose any eligibility time and schools can't restrict who an athlete transfers to. The student is guaranteed a scholarship for both years barring special circumstances but the school isn't penalized for a scholarship one of the two years.

Athletes don't lose eligibility and are free to go wherever they want.
Athletes looking to leave before senior year wouldn't want to transfer so it would reduce the numbers to people in really bad fits or situations.
Poaching wouldn't be a really big issue since the wait is so long.
Shows an emphasis on the academic nature having a student attend school for 2 years, good PR.

why are people for restricting a player's ability to choose where they play? one of the most glaring flaws of sports culture is its tendency to uphold authoritarian principles.

Think it boils down to commitment. They commit to their school, receive the praise for it, and then are expected by fans to honor their commitment. Not saying its right but I think that's how most people feel.

And college athletics are even worse than pros about pride and commitment because many actually have a real attachment to the school as they went there themselves.

The thing everyone needs to remember is that the NCAA is putting out a product. And the rules they have in place are there to make a "better" product.

They can't compete on quality with the NBA, but they've found a way to sell nostalgia, rivalries, and warm feelings about "Student Athletes". If you removed all this you would just have lousy basketball. Controlling the workforce the way they do allows them to maximize profits and to keep a certain control over the level of competition not to mention maintaining favorable tax status.

Ultimately you can't expect a lot of outrage over the players because people care more about the consumable than the labor. They treat the workers who make iPads like shit but people buy them because the product is desirable. Its not really any different here.

can't we all agree that the transfer epidemic is hurting college basketball, especially concerning loyalties and rivalries and watching a player mature over the course of 3-4 years playing for your team

there need to be appropriate orders put in place that would discourage 400+ transfers per year

I do agree that the product sucks now. But its not just transfers, the one and done rule has just as much to do with it as does the AAU circuit. I do think there would be less transfers if they did away with the stupid 1 year NBA rule.

-under 30sec shot clock
-NBA style hand check and zone rules
-Stop so much manipulation of the refs.

If you had no one year post high school NBA rule then the draft would be the top 8-10 high school players and then only about 20 college players meaning less college slots in the first round, more college players returning and an overall better product regardless of transfers. Quality has taken a dive since the one and done era.

^agree about rules changes. Also NBA 3 point line please.

I think the rule is there to prevent tampering from coaches trying to get players to leave their current team.

Theoretical Example: Calipari sees that Erick Green is the highest scoring guard in college bball and needs a guard for next year. Without the current rule he would start working on getting him to leave and come play at UK next season. The rule makes it so that can't happen.

Rules committee decided to sit on their thumbs this year instead of doing something to help the painful pacing and flow of the game the last few years. Whether its reducing/limiting timeout usage or reducing the shot clock or not allowing big men to get mugged all day. Something had to be done and now it will be another two years before they meet again.

I used to be a big time college bball fan over the nba, but now unless state is playing, I can barely watch it. The flow is terrible and watching the nba this playoffs highlight just how much better it could be.

^ agreed, 100%.

also, speeding up the shotclock would be a disaster in college. think of how many buzzer shots get taken in the nba, and then imagine how ugly that'd be if they were 5 college players instead.

also, i really really like seeing more than pick and rolls.

I think they could reduce it to a 30s shot clock and not change much about the offense besides get rid of the standing around time. They definitely need to change or eliminate the above the shoulder automatic flagrant (exhibit a- about 3-4 ludicrous calls in the tourney alone and that retarded flop by plumlee against Howell).

But honestly the biggest annoyance is too many timeouts and the refs constantly checking the monitors for replays fucking up the end of games. I'm not exactly sure how the nba structures their tv timeouts but their end of games are worlds better to watch because its not a stoppage every other second.

You could make all those changes and not even touch the IMO overly physical defense and it would make it much better to watch

I think the charge call needs to be de-emphasized. The refs with all these 18-steps-point-to-the-other-end-of-the-court charge calls have to stop (fuck u TV Teddy).

I'm not sure this would work at all. But to help with the freedom of movement and the fact that big man get mauled down low. Maybe a defensive 5 sec call? It totally fuck Syracuse but think it frees the lane up.

The NBA works nice with 4 qrts so there is less in game stoppage.

Restoring hoops order in the Triangle
Despite NC State's buzz last season, Duke and UNC still rule North Carolina

Steve Shelton rattles off the names of talents from the past, area players making an impact now and those who will enter the scene in a few years.

He pauses at times as he recalls the name of another stellar kid from an upcoming recruiting class -- an athlete too young to vote or even drive.

It's difficult to track them all, but it's clear that the local pipeline is packed with studs.

"The 2016 class is loaded," said Shelton, program director and assistant coach for the North Carolina-based AAU program called the CP3 All-Stars. "I mean, loaded."

Shelton has coached some of the state's top prospects. Each year, his program's players (Rodney Purvis, Reggie Bullock, P.J. Hairston are former CP3 All-Stars) comprise a slice of the local talent pool that the triumvirate of squads in the zone known as the Triangle -- North Carolina State, North Carolina and Duke -- has direct access to each year.

[+] Enlarge
AP Photo/Gerry Broome
Mike Krzyzewski and Roy Williams are still the kings of the Triangle.
"Our state is a basketball state," said Jeff Capel, a Duke assistant and former player. "Everything revolves around basketball."

That fertile territory has contributed to the sustained success of the trio, which should continue in the 2013-14 season. That won't begin for another six months, but in ACC country, specifically the Triangle, it feels much closer.

Once again, Duke and North Carolina will be the cornerstones of the expanding powerhouse conference. NC State's immediate future is less certain, but the Wolfpack's recruiting class is intriguing. So it's a good time to be a fan of college basketball in the Triangle.

"It's really exciting," said Steve Wiseman, who covers Duke for the Durham Herald-Sun. "The ACC in the past few years hasn't been as strong as it had been in the previous three decades as far as teams getting into the tournament. Nobody has been in the Final Four from the ACC since 2010. I think people here are looking forward to next year."

And beyond.

All three schools attract players who hail from other regions. They don't necessarily need North Carolina players to win. But they usually have the edge on the state's best youngsters, many of whom grow up with a desire to be Tar Heels or Blue Devils.

"It's very tough [to lure kids to outside programs], especially if those programs have already offered," Shelton said. "If they've been offered [by Duke or North Carolina], you rarely see a kid leave the state of North Carolina."

North Carolina and Duke anchor one of the most intense rivalries in sports, but NC State has been elite in stretches, too. The Wolfpack have reached the NCAA tournament 13 times since Jim Valvano led the program to the national championship in 1983.

Basketball in the Triangle, per the norm, is healthy and nationally pertinent. Both Duke and North Carolina should be ranked in the top 10 of the preseason polls.

Next season, Duke will be led by Jabari Parker, one of the most NBA-ready freshmen in recent history. He'll join Rasheed Sulaimon and Quinn Cook in one of the nation's top backcourts.

"[Parker] impacts winning in so many different ways, I don't think you can put a measure on it," Capel said.

North Carolina lost Reggie Bullock to the NBA, but a strong recruiting class and the return of James Michael McAdoo and P.J. Hairston should position the Tar Heels to compete for the ACC crown. With local big men Isaiah Hicks and Kennedy Meeks joining the program, McAdoo will move back to small forward a year after playing exclusively in the paint last season. And consensus No. 1 recruit Andrew Wiggins is still considering the Tar Heels.

NC State is the most unpredictable bunch within the Triangle. The program's top four scorers from last season are gone. Former McDonald's All American Rodney Purvis transferred to Connecticut. But Mark Gottfried signed a recruiting class that's ranked 14th by RecruitingNation.

The Wolfpack fell short of expectations after entering last season as the preseason favorite to win the ACC. Its recent surge under Gottfried, however, has enhanced the Triangle's status as the most unique concentration of talent in the country. Still, there are many unknowns for NC State entering next season.

"They didn't live up to things last year," Wiseman said. "They have the talent. Now it's a question of can he coach them up, develop a team so they can get better."

[+] Enlarge
Bob Donnan/US Presswire
Mark Gottfried needs to restore the momentum that NC State lost last season.
Gottfried's backers believe he'll continue to build, even though they recognize that next season could be a rocky one if the Wolfpack are forced to rely on their freshmen.

"I'm not one to say they're building," said Quinton Jackson, head coach at Word of God Christian Academy in Raleigh, N.C., and a former NC State point guard. "I'm under the mindset that they're regaining what we had in the past."

The present involves unprecedented change. Expansion will soon turn the conference into the nation's premier league. Pitt, Notre Dame and Syracuse will join the ACC next season. Louisville arrives in 2014.

"You're talking about maybe the best basketball conference in history," Capel said.

By next summer, Jim Boeheim, Mike Krzyzewski, Roy Williams, Jamie Dixon, Mike Brey and Rick Pitino will all be ACC coaches.

And the new arrivals could use annual matchups against North Carolina, NC State and Duke as bait for local recruits.

"Now the Notre Dames, the Louisvilles can come into the state of the North Carolina and say [to parents], 'You will see your son play up close,' " Jackson said. "That gives them some leverage."

The overall outlook on the ACC's growth, however, is a positive one. What's good for the conference seems good for the Triangle, too. And even with new league threats, the trio's stronghold on regional talent probably will remain.

But what about Duke's head coach, the most powerful symbol of the Triangle's historical fortitude? What is Coach K's future? That's been a pressing question in the Triangle for years.

Coach K is still vibrant, but the legend eventually will leave the sideline. Roy Williams won't coach forever, either. Still, Coach K's tie to Duke basketball is unmatched. He is Duke basketball.

"Coach K is the only coach I've known at Duke," Capel said. "I don't remember Duke without Coach K being on the sideline. So I personally can't imagine anyone else walking out to the floor and walking on that sideline. But inevitably it's going to happen."

But when it does, Duke will adjust. North Carolina, too.

The strength of the basketball brands within the Triangle, however, will probably not change. As long as the area continues to produce talented players who dream of competing for North Carolina and Duke, and the two schools remain among the nation's elite teams, then basketball in the Triangle will stay strong.

NC State will continue to seek consistency.

Gottfried has to fix some holes this season, but he's already received commitments from Caleb Martin and Cody Martin, a pair of top-60 prospects in the 2014 class per RecruitingNation. The future could be bright for the Wolfpack, too.

"You have to look at the history of the schools, the fan base and the success," Jackson said. "lt is that success that makes the [Triangle] a tremendous place for basketball.""

"From ESPN's Chad Ford (Insider):

Q: Would Wiggins really be the No. 1 pick in the 2013 NBA draft?

Every GM and scout in the league with whom I've spoken believes Wiggins would be the No. 1 pick in the 2013 NBA draft if he were eligible. Every one.

"Noel is a really good NBA prospect," said one GM whose team will be in the draft lottery. "He's just not a franchise-changing player. Wiggins is one of the three or four best prospects in the last decade. He has the ability to completely turn around a franchise. All 30 teams would take him with the No. 1 pick if they could."

Q: Well, sure, he'd be No. 1 in this draft. The 2013 NBA draft is one of the weakest in memory, right?

"No," the same GM said. "In every draft since 2007. [Greg] Oden would've went ahead of him. If Kevin Durant couldn't beat him out, no one could. But Derrick Rose, Blake Griffin, John Wall, Kyrie Irving, Anthony Davis? Wiggins goes ahead of all of them. I'm not saying he'll be better than all of them. I'm just saying knowing what we know about them when they were in the draft and knowing what we know about Wiggins, he'd beat out all of those guys."

Not sure why anyone would pull against Wiggins, he seems like a good kid who actually made a good decision. Could have gone to Kentucky and sleep-walked to a NCAA Championship, could have gone to FSU and be the best player on a bad team and still not win a championship(see: Lebron James in Cleveland), gone to UNC and been an asshole, or go to Kansas to a solid program and try to thwart Kentucky's one-and-done super team.

I'm glad he picked Kansas. Just sets up another team to stand in Kansas's way, plus it makes Bill Self look better than Roy Williams in a head-to-head recruiting match, and if Kansas manages to win a title with Wiggins, it's one more championship for Kansas post-Roy Williams.
