I think the natural compromise is to buy a hot tub out of the country.

or why not go to the Bahamas?

its a few short flights

but my advice there is not to go to one of the larger resorts
go to a smaller resort - like Firefly http://www.fireflysunsetresort.com/

has your bf done any boating?
rent a boat and bomb around Abaco!

Firefly is expensive! That's $3000 for a week! Not including food or travel expenses.

I was annoyed by this thread, but the more I think about it, I think you did the right thing by asking for advice.

I've never been in the position of having 5 grand to totally blow, but I imagine there are lots of fun things you could do. You don't even need to leave the country. Just do something totally bizarre and frivolous.

Shit we could go to Vegas and get eloped!

It's so damn hard trying to decide what to do. But the first things that popped in our head were the hot tub and cruise, he wants a hot tub, I want a stress free way to get him a passport and experiencing new shit!

Another thing to consider. The bf is getting ready to start a job that has contests where you can win vacation prizes as well, and I'm sure he will do well. Vacation for free is better than vacation for not free. Lol

^^I've never been on a cruise, but enough people think they're lame that now I really, really want to.

The brochures always feature old people, but Viking River Cruises look awesome:

I dunno. Since you're blowing the money, it means you don't have to fret about it.

Fuck a pain in the ass hot tub, and fuck a stupid cruise, and fuck your boyfriend for being a douche.

I'd either kick him to the curb and buy $5000 of mutual funds, or barring that, tell him to suck it the fuck up and take a real vacation. Barring that, see plan "A".

your dr will give you some xannys for a flight if you ask

even if you are not that anxious they make the flight more relaxing

also why not buy a 3500 hot tub, and take a 1500 vac?

So she has $5k to blow and her top options are a cruise or a hot tub? That's the tackiest shit I've ever heard.

You have $5k to entertain the idea of a vacation with and your first thought is a cruise?

You disgust me.

The premise of the thread is cartoonishly tacky. But I kind of thought that was the point.

What's weird to me is that there really is no such thing as money to blow unless you're extraordinarily wealthy. And people who believe in money to blow generally don't need advice on how to do it. But, really, if you're having to think about it, then you're not blowing it.

I mean, if I gotta blow five grand, that's easy: Christmas Story leg lamp which I'd use year round, especially frivolous gifts for my loved ones, and this beautiful bookshelf that I've basically wanted to bwn for almost a decade.

+1 with duke.

Seriously... How the fuck does your BF do anything if he gets "anxiety" from sitting in a plane... there are no snakes involved unless the anxiety is related to a phobia of flying? But in the same regards, one should also get anxiety from a long drive to Mexico or Canada.

You don't have to spend 5k for a cruise, could do it for 1/3 of that. Shop around and find some great deals; way easier during off season. Could easily find some 7 day for 600 or less per person, 400 or less per person for 4 day cruise; sometimes cheaper when they do cashback deals or special offers. Shit, with all the bad press cruises have been getting in the past year, it shouldn't be hard to find deals. Shop for two airfare (maybe around 400-800 total depending on day & other factors) or drive down to Florida ($250 about round trip in fuel), should cost less than 2k total.

If you or your BF (or even parents) are part of a larger corporation, I would highly find out if you are entitled to corporate discounts. My mom works for American Airlines and she gets huge discounts yearly with Royal Caribbean, reason why we've taken a lot of cruises with them mostly instead of other cruise liners.

If you want a nice relaxing tropical getaway, find a nice all inclusive resort in Mexico, the Caribbean or Bermuda. I've been to a number of Grand hotels over the years and every time its been exceptional and cheap. Get in on deals (like what many resorts are offering right now) and you can get package deals for 60-100 a night; they are usually 200 and up normal price. Plus they are large resorts so if you want to relax, you really don't have to leave the resort; most resorts have plenty of activities, restaurants and bars (although alcohol are watered down... its free, what do you expect).

If your BF doesn't have a passport and doesn't intend to go through the process of getting one, then look at Puerto Rico or the Virgin Islands. Resorts are very pricey compared to Cancun deals (400+ a night) in St. Thomas nor are they massive since the Virgins are very tiny, so if I was doing it now I'd find a cheap but decent motel/hotel and plan on walking a lot or find a nice rental house for a week for 100-200 a night. Puerto Rico is very nice and has a decent amount of historical landmarks if you like that sort of thing, but since its a much larger island (main island that is), transportation to get around places is pretty much required.

Or shit... just find some nice places in Florida during the two weeks of Spring/Fall time when its not 100% humidity 24/7. Sarasota is quiet and nice, plus easy to find great rates for hotels or rental homes since the area took a huge tourism hit back in 09 and slowly trying to recover. The beaches there are super nice and the sunsets are so damn awesome. Plus its not too far from St. Petersberg or Tampa if you wanted some nightlife or social activities. I rented a 3 bedroom house there for 1000 for a week with a photog friend and invited a number of models to hang out with us on a private beach for some photoshoots; great time and we saved a lot of money doing it.

Just my 2 cents.

I went on a cruise when I was 17 and thought it was the best thing in the world. Great weather, all you could eat pizza 24 hours a day, and we got to stop off in some cool places I had never been before.

Now that I'm a grown-up and have seen a lot of the world, you probably couldn't pay me to go on a cruise. But I can still see it as a relaxing vacation with enough stuff to do to have an enjoyable time.

For someone with a fear of flying and just wants to chill and relax for a little while...sounds like a good idea.

Saying all the way implies that the other option is partially white trash. For example, you wouldn't say: Watermelon and fried chicken? why not white trash it out all the way with an above ground pool.

Because the two separate things are in different stereotypical groups.

Krallum read it correctly. Smath74 is implying that hot tubs are at least a little white trash. And, while it's a little more nuanced than that, Smath's observation is mostly accurate.

I think the OP's choice of carelessly spending $5k in an unimaginative either or case between a hot tub or a cruise line vacation with little before hand research and the fact that they are asking advice on how to spend it on tdub to be more indicative of the similar laziness and train of thought that "white trash" people put towards their focus on a cheap above ground pool, considering the opportunity cost of either can be had for less than that. It's not like people who buy above ground pools tend to spend much time doing comparative analysis on a product that only costs a few hundred bucks. Plus it seems kind of dubious to invest in a hot tub after winter is over and summer is getting close.

But then again, I could be over-thinking it a bit...

Its more on the disposition that OP has towards the idea of needing to spend $5k on a luxury product or vacation with little planning or research and the impulsiveness of the behavior, changing a want into a need, as well as the desire to relay the information to a community about the rash opportunity cost.

Yeah... I'm kinda stretching the issue a bit.

I really don't seen a connection between "white trash" and "hot tub" without some creative thinking. I don't think a hot tub is white trash at all since its considered a luxury item and tends to be more expensive, plus you don't exactly install a hot tub on the front lawn like some rednecks do.

Word to the wise if you buy a hot tub, make sure the depth is adequate if you are tall. They are not all the same height.
