I think the main thing to bring are MRE and toilet bags. I am not sure about how to stockpile water though, it is bulky, heavy, and would take up lots of room in your suitcase. Maybe its worth checking an extra bag for a survival kit. You can probably get them to waive the fees if you threaten to complain to CNN that they wont let you check your survival kit.

Bring a volleyball so you can make a friend when you're stranded on a desert island.(are yall serious about packing MREs and water??)

Do you want to depend on the staff of a powerless cruise-liner that is floundering in the water to provide for your basic needs?
3/22/2013 12:18:43 PM
Bring 5-gal plastic camping water totes and fill them up after you are in your room.

Cruise ship in Italy hit a control tower killing 3 people.

It was a container/cargo ship, not a cruise ship. But several are dead. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-202_162-57583426/death-toll-in-italian-cargo-ship-crash-rises-to-7/

Looking at going on Carnival cruise out of Charleston end of June. Ship is named Fantasty that we would go on.Any recommendations if good bad ship? I haven't been on a cruise in forever.
6/12/2013 8:08:26 PM
it only hits the bahamas.go to tampa and you'll hit up the Caribbean. much better islands and much better cruise.Charleston is a nice town but the bahamas aint much to write home about.driving or flying?
6/12/2013 8:13:31 PM
We are open to going out of anywhere but going out of SC (live in Raleigh) makes things easier obviously. Our window to leave is June 23-25, 5 days or so and don't really have to many crazy preferences. Just want something where we can relax during the day and have fun at night. I just started looking around and there are a lot of options it seems. The reviews don't help, one guy says food was amazing next review says food sucks.I came to TWW ... My most trusted source for advice.
6/12/2013 8:22:07 PM
I'd drive a little further to Tampa honestly. The Carib compared to bahamas is miles apart in terms of everything. 5 day is perfect. look into Grand Cayman and Cozumel or something like that. Its about 9 hours for the drive but well worth it. If its your first time on a cruise, bahamas wont be bad but be sure to step it up next time and you'll know exactly what i mean. You could also look into flights on spirit out of myrtle beach into somewhere like st thomas or PRico and do an all inclusive resort.

I would rather hang from the side of a train in India than ever fly Spirit Air
6/12/2013 8:26:27 PM
Did an all inclusive recently so looking to do cruise to change it up.We don't mind driving to Tampa or flying to Miami if it makes it significantly better.I think we can make any destination work more concerned about a fun boat. Also I'm high jacking this thread for this because it didn't seem like my personal travel needed its own thread.

My brother JUST did the Charleston-Bahamas ship late last month. He said the ship was great, the food was definitely good, et cetera. He said there weren't many kids, though a lot of that was from segregation to the kids areas. The Bahamas kinda blow though. It's... just not that great of a place, the locals will hound you like nothing else.
6/12/2013 10:12:54 PM
Ya I know Bahamas sucks but not many options for when we are trying to leave. I think it is easier to find fun things to do on the islands for a few hours than be on a crappy boat where most time is spent.

The Fantasy is Carnival's oldest and one of the smallest ships. So don't expect too many bells and whistles compared to the behemoth ships they advertise on TV. I second the Bahamas not being the best itinerary, but if you have never been it is worth going once. Check out the Atlantis resort in Nassau, it is pretty awesome. There are quite a few other ports on the East Coast and you can find cheap airfare if you time it right. It won't help you this time if you are going in June, but Southwest is running a sale for $99 one way from RDU to MCO right now for travel starting in August. Also Baltimore has a port I've left out of before, and flights there are $49 one way. The best thing about leaving out of SC is the price and being able to drive, but honestly Raleigh to Port Canaveral or MD is not bad at all and you can probably find a better boat at those ports. My wife and I booked a cruise on the Dream for early September leaving out of Canaveral and we are planning on driving.

Go for Carib.the bahamas suck.make the drive to Tampa. its well worth it.and like someone said earlier...all inclusive on the island for a few days > cruise. any day all day.I've done a LOT of carib travelingcarib>bahamas all day every day even with a hurricane
6/13/2013 1:55:22 AM
Just looked at the Carnival site and that 5-day out of Charleston ($589/pp) will be more expensive for the cruise alone than a 6-day out of Ft. Lauderdale ($439/pp) that goes to MUCH better ports. As long as you're not driving a gas guzzler, you'll pay about the same with the extra drive and go to better places.
6/13/2013 9:18:36 AM
Thanks for the thoughts. Sounds like it is worth the drive. We are prob booking tonite so anymore thoughts till then feel free to post.

did a 7 day cruise a few years ago and went out of Tampa to the Caribbean. sailed on the Legend which was pretty damn nice. me and my girlfriend flew (because of being in NJ) into Tampa and then took a taxi from the airport to the port. but if you can drive to there, do it. there is a big parking garage right across from the port for all the travelers to leave their cars. the area is also nice with lots of restaurants and shops if you need to kill time before or after. and yes, Caribbean > Bahamas.
