Trying to dock is a bitch. I kind of want them to have an auto nav feature, but that might make it too easy. But it would make it easier to build a large space program
12/23/2012 10:59:39 AM
This is why I'm a much bigger fan of Orbiter, the controls are much more steamlined.http://smithplanet.com/stuff/orbiter/orbitaloperations.htmHow you dock in Orbiter.

i just bought the full version of this game. my life really is over.

I want to test a potential ship to get me into munar orbit and back before I commit to a lander mission. It relies on a cluster of 9 nuclear engines but I'm having issues getting it into orbit would there be any gains made from doing a 6 symmetry orange tank mainsail engine and have 3 drop off around 5000 meters with fuel lines connecting them to the other 3 to refill them or should I just keep 6 and drop when they all run out of fuel[Edited on January 1, 2013 at 5:10 PM. Reason : ...]
1/1/2013 5:09:00 PM
i think using nukes to go to the mun is not the best idea... simply not necessary. mainsails are best for your first stage or maybe a large second stage.
1/1/2013 5:21:45 PM
I made a trip to/from minmus, but i lost one of my kerbalnauts hot dogging it on minmus (climbed a huge mountain and tried to achieve orbit with just my suit thrusters. didn't work.)
1/1/2013 5:29:05 PM
well i'm also using it to test the efficiency of the nuclear engine cluster since I'm considering using them for an interplanetary ships and to move large payloads around when i eventually set up station colonies in orbit around the sun and refueling stations between planets to allow longer missions without returning to kobol
1/1/2013 5:44:50 PM
i used a nuclear engine for my mun rocket too. i went back and changed it afterwards.
1/1/2013 6:46:39 PM
Finally landed my rover on Mun! Can seat up to 6. The next version of the rover is going to have a winch on the back and will be a tow truck.
1/9/2013 8:19:55 PM
Touchdown on Laythe! If you have trouble with interplanetary transfers post here. I have found no good tutorials out there and had to piece it together myself.
1/9/2013 10:32:08 PM
I haven't attempted interplanetary travel yet. I'm setting up a robust Munar base first. I'd like to use in situ resources on Mun to help fuel interplanetary vessels. (yes, i know right now there is no way to do that for real in the game, but there is a mod that is basically a fuel generator that consumes a shit ton of electricity... i'm going to place it on the surface on Mun near the south pole where water could conceivably be found to simulate it.)I also have discovered that if you hit F6, it will make a save point that you can go back to in case shit goes awry for some unforseen reason by hitting F9 (or if you want to hot dog it on your Munar Rover )
1/10/2013 7:57:21 AM
so there is this Kethane pack where you actually can do exactly what I want... I just can't find it on the KSP Spaceport.
1/10/2013 9:53:28 AM
^^shit typo... F5.
1/10/2013 6:01:31 PM
jesus christ i hate docking
1/10/2013 11:02:56 PM
Yeah takes some practice. You are using ijklhn, right?
1/10/2013 11:17:17 PM
yeah i know how to do it and can do it with small things, but i've got something thats difficult to turn and seemingly impossible to balance the rcs on, i'm about to scrap the whole mission and build design version 3 of my initial habitation module for my space stationbasically my problem is that when i use the translation controls it also applies rotation and using asas to hold me on a heading eats up my monoprop too fast to successfully come in from 100 meters[Edited on January 10, 2013 at 11:26 PM. Working on my wing of TIE Fighters, docked and fueled up. Two more to go.[Edited on January 12, 2013 at 12:07 AM. Reason : ]
1/12/2013 12:04:47 AM
Fucking nice
1/12/2013 6:44:04 PM
Thx. Every TIE has its own advanced asas, rcs tank, and poodle engine. They are wicked fast but only have about 90to seconds of burn time. The next branch of that station will house a wing of TIE interceptors.
1/12/2013 9:36:28 PM
My X-Wing design....needs some work. But very stable flying. A space-borne version could be easily done as well.

you son of a bitch
1/14/2013 11:15:40 PM
ha... i love how some people have completely different takes on this game. Some go for capability driven craft while others go for style... Wyloch definitely has style.
1/15/2013 7:30:45 AM
I have one rocket that is intended for all my interplanetary trips. It's big enough to get to any celestial body but not necessarily back. It has no style. But now that I've landed on everything, yeah I'm just screwing around right for the time being.
1/15/2013 8:25:54 AM
did you land manned or unmanned or both? My goal is to never leave a kerbalnaut stranded or dead... a lot of F5 and F9 involved
1/15/2013 9:07:01 AM
I have never launched anything without a manned type of command pod.So yeah, a lot are marooned.
1/15/2013 1:25:05 PM
ha well make sure to rescue Jeb at least!
1/15/2013 1:29:58 PM
I made (and finally landed without glitches) a moon tow truck... It's first mission was to attach an abandoned pod to the side of one of my moon landers at so called Mun Base Alpha (as I like to call it)my next task is to re-purpose some nearby debris from an earlier unmanned [failed] mission. If it's not salvageable, I have a moon habitat that landed half a click from Mun Base Alpha that I'm going to cart over (2 hab modules and a lander can connected in a stack with fuel)[Edited on January 15, 2013 at 10:34 PM. Wyloch lets see you make a B-Wing that can get out of the atmosphere, then I'll crown your ass
1/15/2013 11:14:28 PM
death starassembled in orbitdo it.
1/16/2013 8:05:07 AM
Give me until Sunday.edit: I just looked up what a B-wing is. This is gonna be fun. X-Wing and TIE were easy because they're symmetric. Just put em on top of a lifter. This one will require epic balance.[Edited on January 16, 2013 at 10:35 AM. Reason : ]

i sent a lander to and from Mun yesterday and I forgot to give it any SAS It was kind of a pain but if anyone is rusty at using rcs, this is a good exercise.[Edited on January 17, 2013 at 7:18 AM. Reason : ]

Found the second space center on Kerbal!(after driving about 100 km over a mountain range)
1/21/2013 4:26:07 PM
Have ya'll been playing the game as is, or getting some of the add ons in the SpacePort?
1/21/2013 9:19:56 PM
some mods... none of the "cheating" ones like teleportation and shit like that.
1/21/2013 9:54:45 PM
I'm obviously behind Wyloch, but I got my first probe to Eve and am mapping the terrain... going to have to find an area with super high elevation to land if I want to get Jeb et al back. (super tough to launch a rocket from that thick atmosphere and high gravity)
1/28/2013 9:42:04 PM
Anyone here play StarCraft?I present the Terran barracks:(reference)Ready to launch:Moving, getting ready to land in new location:Nailed it.
1/30/2013 4:53:34 PM
My latest challenge... I have purposely stranded 3 Kerbals on Eve. Eve is probably the hardest planet to make a return from due to the strong gravity PLUS super thick atmosphere. I'm creating an ion powered rig to rescue them that will be mostly reusable. I'm also purposely sending my return vehicle empty and relying on Kethane to fuel it. I will post pictures when my craft is ready!
2/9/2013 2:22:36 PM
I couldn't get past not being able to make fins and things directly level and opposite
2/9/2013 2:26:53 PM
There's a button that automatically synchronizes parts added to the ship. In the demo it's top left, in the full game it's bottom left when you're in the VAB.
2/9/2013 7:53:59 PM
I've created my Ion-Drive mothership "Zeus" to go harvest "Kethane" from Eve, convert it into fuel, and rescue my Kerbals! This beast took 6 total launches to assemble in orbit. The individual parts include the 3 hulled drive section, plus the landing parts... "Zeus Return," "Perketheus 1" (the part that seeks out and drills the kethane), and "Perketheus 2" (the converter and re-fueler)This was my first attempt assembling a ship in orbit... i've done a station before but this was a unique challenge getting everything to line up perfectly. The solar panels could have been spread out more, but they do have the advantage of exposing a lot of area to the sun no matter what direction the ship is pointed. In the picture above the Ion engines are covered up by docking ports... there are 4 engines per hull giving it 12 ion engines total. Powered by solar and nuclear. Total mass of this thing is 221 tons [Edited on February 9, 2013 at 9:16 PM. Reason : ]
2/9/2013 9:01:46 PM
F5 is your friend. Staging gets kind of funky when so many parts are docked... and engines facing opposite directions are not a good thing to fire simultaneously.
2/9/2013 9:44:15 PM
Just fired her up for a test run of the Ion drive... "why the fuck isn't it getting enough power????"a fucking eclipse. wonderful.
2/9/2013 9:53:43 PM
From huge to tiny... this is my standard Kethane probe... this one is currently searching Mun. I have 4 more loaded onto my mothership, but the planetary alignment isn't right yet so i thought i'd start mapping Mun and Minmus so they can be my gas stations as I really start colonizing the Kerbol System. [Edited on February 10, 2013 at 10:57 AM. Reason : ]

mothership is on the way to eve. used conventional chemical rockets to get it out of Kerbin orbit, and then using the ion drive to transfer into eve orbit. haven't finished my eve transfer burn yet though... takes a long time and putting it into time warp really causes a lot of bending/flexing of my ship!
2/13/2013 9:56:36 AM
Great project Smath
2/13/2013 6:07:17 PM
Thanks update: Mothership is on a rendezvous course for Eve. planning on getting the aerobraking perfect to save my ion drive for the trip home. (F5 a lot )in the meantime, here is the first part of my Minmus gas station...drilling my very first kethane pocket. I have an onboard converter and plenty of storage space for converted fuel.
