i've got a smaller set of antlers from a 5 pointer that I killed earlier this year. Im thinking of turning it into a knife handle. Anyone know anyone who makes these? I've seen online tutorials how to make them yourself, but I dont really care to do it myself.

Running some dogs down east tomorrow. Im excited, this is the first time ive hunted with dogs. Should be a good time, the property my buddy leases has not been hunted all season, so there should be some good deer coming out of the woods.

Agreed. I think running dogs is an abomination to "hunting".

Last week, as I was finishing up fielddressing a doe, I saw a hunter walk into the woods near me. I whistled out and went over to talk to him. He said he and his buddies were running dogs on the property across the street and they'd chased a buck over my way. About 30 seconds later he looks up and says "SHIT THERE HE IS!!!!111" and takes off down the hill, trips, falls, rolls about 40 yards, lol. He stands up, gathers his wits, and takes a shot at him even though the deer is at full sprint now BACK ACROSS THE STREET. The deer narrowly misses an oncoming car who had to slam on the brakes, and as soon as it was across the street, his buddies came flying down the road and slammed on their brakes and literally started shooting from the truck before they even came to a stop.

I couldnt help but stand there and watch this retardedness go down. I'm not sure if they got their buck or not, but I sure fucking hope not.

Oh lord, here comes the debate. Nothing is wrong with dog hunting if it is done responsibly. If it is not being done responsibly, call the warden. If the dogs are on your property, call the warden. They will take care of it. The place we are going is a club and property that is specifically managed just for dog hunting. something like 3000 acres of land and dogs that are trained, have gps collars, and know what they are supposed to do. It is amazing how fired up people get about this. Dog hunting is a tradition that has been around in the south since the beginnings of America.

Do you also have a problem with people doing "man drives" for deer? same principal.

you are in a very small minority of responsible dog hunters

enforcement is the issue. the wrc officers just can't cover all that ground. not a big deal to me. dog hunting is dying and will be illegal statewide in our lifetime.

well the statistics for states where permits and registration of dogs show that it is a very very small minority of dog hunters that do it irresponsibly and break laws. People just get a bad taste in their mouth and hear stories and assume all dog hunters are like that. Then they tell the non hunting public about it and it starts these debates. Most people that dont like it have little to no experiences with dog hunters. They have no idea how it works or what is involved. In Georgia, only 3% of permitted dog hunters had significant problems or violations.

no matter anyways, the trip just got cancelled, so i guess ill just go sit in a tree stand in 30 mph winds.

I guess i have a sore spot for it because there used to be so much of it done horrible near where I live. 3% is just the percentage that gets caught.

I have no problem with how you explain it. Its when it intrudes in other people's property that makes me upset. I cant be there to monitor my hunting land all the time.

no, in georgia all dogs and hunters are registered. you catch a dog on your property, and you report the registration that is attached to the dogs collar. It isnt just the warden catching 3%, it is citizens or other hunters.

Go read up on Florida and Georgias registration laws for dog hunting. They have helped both states manage and regulate dog hunting. North Carolina is largely unregulated and that is part of the problem.

went deer hunting yesterday for what will probably be the last time this year. Had two does at my corn pile. Decided to let the live and they stayed there for almost an hour, very cool to watch Only about 20 yards away and never once saw me in my blind

the dogs that don't pan out ususally get their collars taken off and left wherever they are. We always ended up with groups of them on our farm running our cattle.

You also end up with hunters hunting on your property and claiming they're just trying to locate their dogs. They get all bent out of shape with you when you tell them to leave.

Sad story....

This deer showed up early in the season. Nice wide 6 pointer. Unfortunately, we never saw him again. When we finally did in November, his front left leg had been blown off. Tough animals...hope he makes it. His antlers certainly won't improve with this kind of injury.

yeah I'd like to get in on some hunting here in the area, however I don't have a place to hunt and I'm not a fan of going on federal game lands (too many idiots just shooting a bushes that move).

I'm up for a tdub hunting club. Also, if anyone has some deer meat jerky they wouldn't mind getting rid of I'd love to have some.

And for those who don't dress their own kills, where do you take your animal for dressing? I'd have to field dress mine, as I don't have a truck.

I dont have a truck either. I got 2 deer this season. I field dressed the first one and then hung it from a tree there in the woods and skinned/quartered it. Put the quarters in trashbags and hiked it out of the woods and put them in a cooler in the car. It's a little work, but only took about 2-3 hours total...doing everything completely by myself.

Bury the remains.


The second deer I got this year, I didnt even gut/field dress it. I hung from a tree with a gambrel, carefully skinned only the areas I was butchering, quartered it, and put in trashbags to take back to the car. I was even able to get to the inner "tenderloin" without gutting it. Worked pretty darn well.

I decided to go with Nikon Monarch 10x42 binocular. Went to a local sporting goods store and tested out Nikon, Bushnell, Vortex, and Vanguard. The Nikons looked and felt the best and the salesman said they're good in low light. The only decision at that time was 8x42 or 10x42.

i've got some green ring leupold binos that do fine. it's not like i'm gonna be glassing a mountainside for goats or something.

So far, I've passed up several deer with the bow, but eventually stuck one doe last week.

I have been muzzle loading but passed up does and small bucks.

I'll be hunting all day Saturday, running dogs in the morning and still setting the afternoon. I sighted in my 30-06 this afternoon, and I'm punching tacks at 100 yds. I'm pumped.

There is one picture that seems to be a mature buck but he is barely visible.

Hoping old grey is still alive...caught him on cam one time last year. 16 pointer that RARELY ever comes out for cam, daylight or anything.

Need to get my gun sighted in though.

I'm attempting a DIY European mount for my mule deer skull. I've boiled it once and the meat is stripped, lower jaw is off, brain is out and it's fairly clean and I'm starting the 2nd boiling water now to get rid of any additional tissue and cartilage. Any tips on whitening the skull once I have it completely clean and dry? I've read that bleach can make the bone brittle

you can cover the antlers with black trash bags and tape them up at the base.

or you can do the peroxide method. it'll be faster and come out a purer white.
