At the moment, my best friend is working for me whilehe is between real jobs. It has been very productive in helping my communication skills. My interpersonal communication skills need work especially in a management relationship, and having someone trusted who excels in the area to coach and productively criticize has been awesome. I'm starting to see a difference and people above have noticed a change.

Emails like this one:
Quote :
"My notes may have been a little vague.
The issue is that the [module] is lodged into the back of the [device] in a way that it cannot be removed or even inserted any farther. The only way you will be able to extract it is to open the top and use a crowbar.
The handles that you use to eject it are all the way down like they are supposed to be when you remove the [module].
But alas such is not the case. They are bonded for life. If they were welded together they would not be as stuck together as these two.
Legend is that King Arthur was able to pull a sword from a stone, but I doubt he would be able to pull this [module] from this [device]. They will probably just have to be melted down together.
One should be named Romeo and the other Juliet they will be together in the afterlife.

So we need an RMA for both. I’m unable to get the serial number from the [module] without a crowbar. The tech who opens the chassis may be able to read the serial number of the [module], possibly with the use of a pneumatic drill."

I almost died on a conference call today.

Someone wasn't "present" that was supposed to be, and when someone asked where he was another person chimed in "he was at home sick thanks to some imitation crab meat."

First thought:

I'm sure they all heard me laugh.

I was walking down the hall today at work in the hospital to go get some lunch. Walked by a lab on the 1st floor with the door open and the computer in the room had the meme thread opened on TWW. Was not expecting that at UNC Hospital. Looks like some nurse or tech is a closet TDub stalker/poster.

On a small "vacation" and still able to clock in some billable hours. Put in some morning hours while eating breakfast and relaxing with the fam. Took the dog on a run in the woods...came back and put in some hours. Lounged by the pool, soaked in some rays, and had a few drinks. Then walked back in the house and clocked in a few more hours. Now watching the CWS while clocking in more hours.

I might still get in a full payload this week while having a relaxing vacation. Red Sox game tomorrow might put a dent in that plan, but we'll see.

The occasional free lunch from the conference/assembly rooms across the hall from my office.

They don't happen nearly as often and the food isn't nearly as good since Progress's merger with hostile takeover by Duke Energy, but hey, I got a pretty baller turkey sammich from Jason's Deli today.

that I can spend all day the reactor decks of an aircraft carrier, or anywhere on it really. that my office/base of operation on said carrier is air conditioned. or I can leave the boat and get some work done in my actual office in the yard. or I can just swing by a different part of the yard and check out some nuclear submarines or the new Ford class carrier under construction if I'm so inclined. Yesterday I watched the Enterprise dock for the first stage of her decommissioning, talk about history.

working in a shipyard is pretty badass. gotta have a thick skin both literally and figuratively but that's my kind of engineering

They are almost done building a distillery across the street from my office:

http://www.charlestondistilling.com/

On my one block I have the following restaurants:

Thai Food: http://eatatbasil.com/

All Day Breakfast/High End Diner/Cocktail Bar: http://therarebit.com/

High end Modern American: http://www.themacintoshcharleston.com/

Same as above..with rooftop bar: http://starsrestaurant.com/

Sushi: http://www.o-kusushi.com/

High end Lounge (bottle service and shit): http://republicreign.com/

Craft Cocktail Bar: http://www.thebelmontcharleston.com/

Dive Bar: http://acsbar.com/

Gourmet Doughnut and Coffee Shop: http://www.glazedgourmet.com/

And just a block over there are two sports bars, a gourmet burger and ping pong bar, a high end Italian restaurant, a French Bistro, a bar with the biggest selection of beers on tap in the city, and a neapolitan style pizza place.

Basically I take my dog to work so I'm not tempted to go out to eat for lunch and go to happy hour every day.
