Safe to say I was wrong on this one. It's funny how when I'm wrong it garners so much attention , but when I'm consistently right its no big deal. Don't recall anyone else here taking the seahawks at 50:1 to win the super bowl

I took the Panthers at 100:1 to win the Super Bowl 2 years agoI didn't win the bet, but I won a few hundred off of it
1/16/2013 7:30:12 PM
exactly, i dont expect to hit 50:1 bets, as long as i make money off of them thats the point. if i hit them great, but im doing this to make money.
1/16/2013 7:34:18 PM
so face, the defensive efficiency stat that kenpom uses, is it basically points allowed per 100 possessions or something like that?in which case, even though maryland is missing point blank layups, it supposedly makes our defensive efficiency seem better?
1/16/2013 7:45:25 PM
yes because over the course of the season everyone will have opponents miss bunnies and make lucky shots. That all evens out over the course of a season. Also, if a poor offensive team shoots poorly against you, you won't be credited with as good of a defense as if you stopped a good offensive team like Michigan or Duke.
1/16/2013 7:51:37 PM
if Grambling shoots 17/60 against you or Indiana shoots 17/60 against you, how does that impact defensive efficiency any differently?
1/16/2013 7:54:35 PM
Because it's not raw data. It is adjusted for strength of opponent.Holding a good offensive team to a bad shooting night will reward you much more than holding a poor offensive team to a bad shooting night. That is one of the reasons our defensive rating is so low. We were giving up tons of points to really weak teams the past several weeks.
1/16/2013 7:57:00 PM
so if Miami Ohio sucks at offense, but we give them a couple uncontested buckets when Staats Battle and Jevoni Robinson are in the game, that hurts our AdjD?or does it factor in to blowout win garbage time, kind of like how 4th down conversion rate in the NFL factors in end-game kneel downs[Edited on January 16, 2013 at 7:59 PM. Reason : .]
1/16/2013 7:58:15 PM
I know football outsiders controls for blowout statistics so they don't count. I can't recall off the top of my head how kenpom controls for that sort of thing, but it wouldn't surprise me if it did. I'm sure you could ask him, I don't feel like digging though his entire archive right now to see if he addresses it.
1/16/2013 8:02:18 PM
^^ But Jevoni Robinson is our best defensive player so clearly teams do not score when he is in the game.

Has Paul George made the leap to greatness yet? He's obviously a better player right now than Lebron and Durant.

We've seen enough to know what we are (mediocre) and what we aren't (good).Contrary to popular belief most teams don't improve or regress a great deal in comparison to other teams during the season. Nearly every team will get a little bit better as the season progresses so the relative improvement is smaller.Yes injuries/suspensions can make teams significantly weaker but that's not what we're talking about here.We are a little better than our early results suggest thanks to Vandy's return from injury and Gott finally figuring out to bench Lewis. But unless Lee becomes a good player out of nowhere we don't figure to get much better.Let's face it, TJ can't possibly play any better. Cat can't play any better (if anything id expect him to get worse in conference play). Turner is pretty much who he is at this point in his 4th year. Lee is like 29 years old already, if he had any game we would have seen it by now. Anya can obviously improve a great deal but he's not getting major minutes anyway. Freeman isn't skilled enough to contribute more than he is already. Washington can't play at all so we could improve by benching him completely I guess. I guess Lewis has potential room for improvement in his spot duty, but if he gets increased minutes that take away from Cat that will negate the improvement. There just aren't many more tricks we can pull. We're already playing a fairly optimal roster. We have pretty bad results and schedule strength so far.The one thing that is good is that our ACC schedule is frontloaded. Meaning we're going to lose a ton of games early on and then we'll appear to "improve" by winning more on the backend. Our "last 10 games" metric will look more impressive than if the schedule was backloaded.Still, I'd expect us to be out of the NCAA tourney hunt altogether after our loss to Duke on January 18th. That will drop us to 1-4 in the ACC and from there it's all about righting the ship for an NIT push.

Spot on post face. You were one of the few who didn't drink the koolaid after we beat Duke in Jan last year. Your post should in general sum up how this season goes. NIT is where we will end up in all probability.Good point about relative improvement. Sometimes fans hope for a large delta in performance while not taking into account injuries, other teams and conference strength...
