Can anyone with a modern sprint phone run a 3g speed test in raleigh? My evo may have problmes im not aware of. Want to see how fast it is with a more modern phone and no 4g.

I just got 500k on 2 bars of Verizon 3G, fwiw.

Whats the normal range for 3G speeds from the different carriers?

Well, against popular opinion I went with Sprint. I needed a phone today since I busted mine yesterday. The guy said that 4g LTE would be a huge improvement over whats here now, and that the Galaxy SIII that I got has a much better antenna than my evo.

Its been great so far, much faster than my evo and much much much longer battery life. I've used the shit out of this thing since 11:00am and its moved 2% off battery.

That being said, it dropped a call when I left the sprint store parking lot

Brandon can you do a speed test? (speedtest app). I'm in the same boat and considering sticking with sprint, but i would like a data point.

For me the speeds weren't [as much as] the issue with Sprint...it was the total lack of connectivity when the phone said I had data.

^^ great phone. good luck with the network. If you end up deciding to hop networks you might have 14 days to make that decision - http://www.sprint.com/landings/returns/ . I'd imagine Verizon will have the phone by then

AT&T will bring down 1.5-3.5mb on 3g. I think on my iphone 3gs I've averaged about 1800kbps when in raleigh.

It'll go faster than that fwiw. att's 3g technology is the exact same as their bullshit 4g (the one that isn't LTE) which I think is rated up to like 21mb? I've gotten as high as 12 on that one.

that sounds like a wifi connection, to be honest.

^ HSPA vs HSPA+, yes. Regular old HSPA (the 7.2mbps variety) pulls the lower speeds.

^^ now that's the sprint speeds I'd expect. unlimited through a straw vs metered through a garden hose.

If I'm on Verizon and my contract isn't up til November, can I take a newer phone into a Verizon store and get it switch from my almost 2yearold phone without having to switch the plan/contract stuff?

YES. Just make sure you can activate it on the Verizon network. ie no ATT phone on Verizon and vice versa.

If I want to keep my old grandfathered unlimited plan this is exactly what I will have to do in the future. I think its crap because they are no longer subsidising my phone and yet still charging me for a subsidized phone plan.

^^ I'm increasingly becoming worried about this.

I am intending to buy a Droid 4 through some means other than Verizon, and now I'm hesitant to do this until I know for certain that they aren't going to change my plan on me. No way in hell do I want to go from $62/month for unlimited data plus more talk and text than I could ever use up to almost $100 for basically the same services.

Well verizon locked the boot loader on the galaxy s3, they're the only carrier to do so.

Really considering another carrier now, as i tend to keep my phones the full 2 years or so, and running non offical roms lets me keep running the latest and also fastest stuff for a bit longer.

^^ I think the Galaxy S3 cancellations were due to how that deal went down. Verizon was subsidising the S3 so customers could get it for $300 with 2yr contract, while still being able to retain the unlimited plan. That flew straight in the face of their previous statements that said you could only keep your unlimited plan if you pay full price for a phone.

If you bring any phone to a Verizon store that can be activated I cant see how they can say NO. Whether its a smartphone or not.

It was a glitch in the system that was requiring people to change. Those who pre-ordered prior to June 28th and had to drop unlimited are being switched back to unlimited data by calling customer service.

averages of two tests on a sprint Motorola Photon (not a brand new model but still available, got mine 2 months ago), 4 bars @ NCSU vet school campus

3g:
Ping 708 ms
Down 127 kbps
Up 141 kbps

Yuck. Lol at upload higher than download, also.

4g:
Ping 106 ms
Down 8.2 mbps
Up 1.2 mbps

That I can deal with. Yes it's "fake" 4g (WiMax) but it's worlds better than the 3g speeds and coverage, at least in these parts, is pretty decent.

I found wiMax coverage around Raleigh to be scarce, at best.

Do they at least have it auto-connect to the wiMax towers or do you still have to do it manually.

Maybe I'm just an anomaly, but I have 4G signal at both of my workplaces and had it at my house. No 4g where I'm currently living but I only get one bar of 3g there so it's a sprint dead zone anyway (temporary, thankfully).

It does seem to autoconnect when I have 4g turned on.

Someone should lose their job(s) over that.

After Apple's snafu with the iPhone antenna, I would think any manufacturer would be on the look out for this kind of stuff.
