not sure what the deal with Clara is

obviously on a show with things like time/space travel and a (newly-introduced) memory-wiping worm I can't really rule much out

she might be the exact same person, who knows how Moffat will make this work

Probably a little like Captain Jack where she can't truly die, but instead of just waking up like Jack does, she is just re-born somewhere else in the universe. Probably has the same personality/looks, but just doesn't have the memories.

I wonder if it's something like Donna where time and space seem to hinge upon her, or if it's the doctor's clone daughter.

with the pseudo Mary Poppins theme in this last episode, it wouldn't really surprise me if she just comes and goes across time

Pretty sure it's ancestry...same thing how the girl from the third episode of the reboot came back for Torchwood.

It would have to be more than ancestry given the coincidences with quotes ("Run, you clever boy"), souffles, repeated deaths, and the flirting. Even the 7.5 trailer mentions the girl who died twice.

The girl who waited...the girl who died twice...

Remember when the companions were just adventurous people and not the focal points of time and space?

From what we've seen of Oswyn, I think she's pretty adventurous:

1) Lone girl who believes herself to be holding off Dalek attacks on her crashed ship

2) A woman leading a double life as a lowly barmaid and a posh governess.

I wasn't saying that she isn't adventurous. I'm just pointing out that there was nothing metaphysical to his selection of Rose or Martha as companions. The plot wasn't derived from their characters and I thought they would go back to something like that after 2 years of EVERYTHING being about Amy.

I make Who references to my students who watch the show and we have a lot of fun with it. But I'm more referring to the "everyone put tally marks on your hand on the same day" idea. It would freak out so many people who don't know what it is.

just started watching this fairly recently. the two-part family of blood episode was really really really good

I have a question, the make-up and effects having to do with aliens all seem really...cheesy. not very good computer animation and costumes that seem like leftovers form the 60's. Yet when they showed the scene where the doctor was aging and on his death bed the make-up looked great so I don't think its a matter of budget. do they make the aliens look like throwbacks on purpose?

They do make some of the aliens from the original show (daleks, cybermen, etc) look authentic, so they do sometimes tend to look a bit shabby by comparison

but also, if you're watching 2005 episodes vs the last two seasons, I'd say the effects have definitely improved in the last couple years due to a huge increase in audience (and maybe also therefore funding)

RE: Saps
A friend of mine had me watch the episode "Blink" from season three as my introduction to the show. I loved it, and then watched from the beginning with the ninth Doctor. I don't know that jumping around matters all that much (if anything it's an apt metaphor for the show). The series tend to have arcs that are really only hinted at until the final few episodes, so you can still appreciate what's going on.

Agreed, it seems everyone gets lured in with Blink and then they start with Eccleston and work their way to present.

I've seen all the "Nu-Who" episodes, and occasionally I'll watch the old Doctor Who episodes they've started putting on Netflix. Special effects can be rough but some of the stories are still entertaining.

I have watched from the ninth doctor. Honestly the 11th is the best if you ask me. Tennant does a great job too but Steven Moffat takes the show to a completely different level with the 11th Doctor. Russell T Davies is overly sentimental and the story may lack at times.

Blink is a damn good episode and also you need no background information to get what's going on. That's why it is THE best starter episode.

Midnight is another good one since there's no continuity involved.

I hope it's because they decided to take time to film a special episode where the Vashta Nerada turn out all the lights at the Superbowl and Beyonce partners with the Doctor to save the day.

loved the episode, albiet a bit confusing. Had to read up on the Den of Geek reviews. Seems Moffat is making a lot of connections to the older doctors, the only problem is I don't remember much of it!

Major flaw. Clara is a bad ass hacker and she doesn't know how to connect to wifi and needs to call tech support? Really irritating.

yeah, I thought that was obvious

but perhaps a little too convenient that she basically just downloads all of her tech skills

would've been cooler had she gone to futuristic hacker school or something

in any case, I noticed the lights flickering in this episode the way they did in earlier episodes when she's around (the Snowmen episode, at least... can't remember the first one as well)

not sure what that's about: maybe she's part of the TARDIS WiFi

though Blink just came on again today, and Angels make the lights flicker too - lights flicker a lot on this show, so maybe it isn't meaningful

The lights have been a major background point all season when Clara/Oswin isn't even around. The first time it happened was Amy's makeup mirror, and I remember a lot of it in Town Called Mercy.

so wheres a good place to start watching this show? I've seen maybe 10-15 episodes from the past (mostly from the last two doctors). Would it be better to pick it up from a new season or new companion? I've seen snowmen, should I just watch the newest one and move forward from here?
