that is a newspapera show depicting a major television news organization covering the spill like this is a re-envisioning

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/the-spill/Frontline did a terrific job of it, but I guess PBS doesn't count as a major news organization at this point.
7/2/2012 10:03:00 PM
^ Frontline isn't a breaking news show that pulled all that together the day of.
7/2/2012 10:14:10 PM
Right, because that would have been impossible without a ridiculous plot contrivance. The point isn't that some news organizations covered it in the exact same time period as on the show, it's that some news organizations did a great job covering the story in exactly the spirit the show espouses just over a longer period of time.

Also the whole sending an email to Jeff Daniels that everyone received was predictable and dumb. She did it twice! Why not just wait until he returns and tell him that in person. I want to like the show and enjoyed the first episode but don't know if I can keep watching if the whole season is more like episode 2. Does anyone else feel like they are watching a network show? Doesn't really have a HBO feel to it. Even the opening credits with the actors name shown with their face seems like network tv.

I'm late on this point, but the speech rubbed me the wrong way because of his adressing the student as the worst generation ever, when it was his own generation that has fucked things up so much. Also his speech was totally erroneous, we lead the world in all kinds of things just because of our size.[Edited on July 3, 2012 at 1:18 PM. Keeps getting better? The second and third episodes were significantly shittier than the pilot. Maybe they reversed the trend tonight but I doubt it.
7/16/2012 12:21:00 AM
Tonight's episode was the first i've seen, but i was really impressed. It'd be awesome if our actual news agencies showed this type of passion for quality reporting.

i haven't watched last night's episode, yet, but i don't think the show is that greatentertaining enough that i'll actually watch it, but if i'm on my laptop or doing something else at the same time, i don't feel like i've missed anything
7/16/2012 9:28:26 AM
ya, I'm a pretty reactionay person. I should probably refrain from posting immediately after watching something. let me revise my statement:I was ready to give up after about the first 10 minutes of this episode (I have a short attention span with drama), but it got way better and ended up being the best episode of the season so far. While I definitely think 2 and 3 were weaker than 1 and 4 I didnt think they were "the worst thing ever put on hbo" by a longshot.also the bigfoot thing was still too over the top

It is interesting to see the storylines that Sorkin is putting forth with this. BP, the Tea Party and Sarah Palin are easy targets. Odd that they completely avoided the debate over the Affordable Care Act, which was the biggest story of 2010.More interesting to me was the way they ended Episode 4. They once again tried to paint ACN as a beacon of fact-based journalism, this time by refusing to proclaim Giffords as dead based on a lone report. The bigger story at the time was the way that MSNBC and other stations falsely linked Jared Lee Loughner to the Tea Party and Sarah Palin in the immediate aftermath of the shooting. They called up an infographic from Palin with crosshairs on specific congressional battles, pushing the (false) idea that Loughner was an extremist Tea Partier. Sorkin could've created a more compelling (and even-handed) storyline by having McKenzie and ACN resist the urge to rush to judgement on the shooter's motives. Unfortunately, Sorkin is too partisan or too vested in his hatred of the Tea Party to have a plotline which shows the media going too far in the other direction.

Will is such a ladies man.
7/16/2012 6:37:54 PM
It's not the greatest show sure, but I don't see all the hate for it that people are talking about. I enjoy it.
7/16/2012 6:52:13 PM
^^^I haven't gotten the impression that ACN is representative of Fox News, so I'm questioning whether the fair and balanced aspect is what the show is going for...
7/17/2012 2:04:41 AM
watching episodes 2-4 in succession you really can see the ups and downs this show is going through. I was close to shutting it down during 3 but pushed through. Episode 4 had a strong middle and end. I'll continue to watch, but this may turn into a DVR backlog instead of a weekly must see.
7/17/2012 7:54:13 AM
why do all the people on this show act like teenagers in their relationships? god that was the worst episode yet
7/17/2012 10:55:28 AM
Its weirdly inconsistent. I always love 45 minutes of an episode and get annoyed with the other 15. This time it was bigfoot and the subplot with jim and the roommate. Annoying but then fifteen minutes later im basically cheering from my couch at the finale.
7/18/2012 12:03:11 PM
yea what the hell was up with bigfoot?
7/18/2012 12:48:44 PM
Plot device to get everyone in the newsroom on a Saturday, when the GG shooting took place. As one reviewer said, though, it's tough watching the last 10 minutes as fictional characters use a real national tragedy to feel good about themselves.
7/18/2012 12:54:52 PM
Anyone else not a big fan of Emily Mortimer? She gets on my nerves a bit and she looks like a bird.
7/18/2012 1:17:05 PM
She looks like a bird because she has avian bone syndrome.
7/18/2012 3:31:10 PM
Can't tell if this a model of what a newsroom should be or a caricature of a newsroom. They've had some really stupid situations in just 3 episodes. All the personal drama is uninteresting.
7/18/2012 8:31:39 PM
Yeah if they cut out the personal subplots and made it 30 mins and stick to the real intent of the show itd be flawless.[Edited on July 18, 2012 at 11:09 PM. Reason : ]
