Nets took a massive mandingo sized phallus right up the rectum on this one. Took it like a champ.

I don't want to believe a world exists where Joe Johnson is worth 5 NBA players and a 1st round pick

Episode #2 of Season 2 of "As the Dwight turns" :Chris Broussard ?@Chris_Broussard Sources: The Nets & Magic are discussing a trade that would send Dwight Howard to Brooklyn for Briik Lopez, Kris Humphies, Marshon Brooks...Chris Broussard ?@Chris_Broussard (con't) and the Nets' first-round picks in 2012, 2014, 2016 & 2018....move would give Nets Big 3 of D-Will, Dwight & Joe JohnsonHoly draft picks batman
7/3/2012 6:37:54 AM
holy shit I would do that in a heartbeat... being rid of dwight's primadonna ass is already addition by subtraction, but getting free first round talent for the next 6 years (less the odd years)? wow.
7/3/2012 6:57:32 AM
Chris Broussard ?@Chris_Broussard Correction: Nets' picks that would be traded to Orlando would be 2013, 2015 and 2017, source says....
7/3/2012 7:30:56 AM
I would not do that trade unless you had some hope of signing howard long term AND he wasn't going to be a headcase. seeing as that's not possible...Trade favors the Magic way too strongly.]
7/3/2012 7:40:23 AM
Nets already have $120+ Million invested in Wallace and Johnson, now if they resign Williams for the max, and trade for Howard and sign him to the Max, they are looking at $350+ Million dollars committed to 4 players.........I am sure I am off with the math somehow.
7/3/2012 7:49:44 AM
Any way you slice it, a Williams-Johnson-Wallace-Howard core is right up there with Miami and OKC, if not already better.
7/3/2012 9:04:19 AM
It's not better. It'll be behind Miami and OKC. They still might not be better than Chicago or Boston. Boston's getting pretty old though.
7/3/2012 9:06:48 AM
Agree to disagree. They'll likely face some first year struggles like Miami, but talent wise they match up favorably. Howard instantly makes any team a top 5 defensive squad, and Wallace can at least slow James down enough to make it somewhat of a struggle. He did it for years in Charlotte.
7/3/2012 9:12:01 AM
But Johnson isn't that good and all that money and no draft picks = probably going to have an incredibly shitty rest of the team. Miami has the big 3 and a very solid group of role players around them. OKC has a TON of young talent, and they don't spend shit on most of it because of that. Boston I'll give you on maybe due to the age of KG and Ray Allen (plus they're both free agents i think?)
7/3/2012 9:23:22 AM
Have the Nets used their amnesty provision yet? If not, Joe Johnson would be a GREAT candidate even if they get Williams to resign & trade for Howard. He might be a decent 3rd option for 2 years, but I can't see him staying at that level for the remainder of his contract.
7/3/2012 9:26:01 AM
Battier, Haslem, Miller and Co.. are a lot closer to bum level at this stage in their careers than solid. When you have so much money tied up in a few stars, you can either allocate the rest of your funds to veterans like Miami did or young players like the Thunder and Spurs. Fortunately for the Nets, they'll have so much money coming in that they'll be able to go well over the tax. In NJ's case, they'll its more about matchups than overall team construction, but that quartet has a 55 win floor no matter who you put around them.
7/3/2012 9:29:38 AM
The Heat would have to make a move to get a somewhat respectable center if Howard goes to a contender. That's their big weakness and they didn't have to worry about that with Boston and OKC (Indian's bigs gave them trouble).I don't think Wallace can get close to checking James anymore, Joe Johnson sucks, and Deron needs to rebound from his sub-par year. There's too many "ifs" in this Dream Team. But Howard alone should put some fear into Miami.
7/3/2012 10:41:03 AM
Joe Johnson is a very good player. Don't let his salary blind you.
7/3/2012 10:50:13 AM
i know popular belief is that Joe Johnson sucks, but somehow the Hawks were the #4 seed this year with Al Horford being out the whole season. And it wasn't because of Tracy McGrady, Jerry Stackhouse, Vald Rad, and my homey ZAZA. Josh Smith was clearly the hawks best player this season, but Joe was still a leading contributor to a #4 seed. Is he worth $20M/season? Hell no. Is he a good starting NBA shooting guard? Absolutely. wouldn't be surprised to see him have a great season with a change of scenery.^ yeah, i'm with you...[Edited on July 3, 2012 at 10:56 AM. Reason : ..]

Great move by Atlanta to get rid of Joe Johnson, but a travesty to lose Marvin Williams after his breakout year. Utah has put together quite the collection of young talent now. Atlanta was good last year because they had a lot of good players like Marvin, Teague, zaza, tmac, smith, etc. They'll take a pretty big hit this year without Johnson and Marvin though. New jersey will be interesting if they get Howard. We know he's a superstar. Wallace isn't a superstar anymore but he's still a really good player. Johnson probably won't ever get back to prior levels but he can still contribute. Deron would be the big question mark. If he can resume star status instead of the mess he's been since arriving in nj they could contend. A lot would hinge on being able to keep shelden Williams to help replace humphries. Would they be able to keep Gaines too? Thats a solid roster if so.Wow, it looks like the Nets just pulled off reggie Evans, their days as bottom feeders are over. Just when you think they couldn't do anything dumber (Joe Johnson) they TOTALLY REDEEM THEMSELVES.also it looks like ilyasova is their backup plan if they can't land Howard. That's a solid plan b, but ilyasova obviously isn't Howard. On a side note I love what the t wolves are doing, if they add fields and stiemsma they've moved themselves into a top 5-6 seed in the west.Hate the Jason terry signing for Boston, woulda liked to see a better use of cap space. Hopefully this doesn't mean Bradley is injured worse than I thought. [Edited on July 3, 2012 at 5:35 PM. Reason : a]

Nash is going to Lakers not Knicks?
7/3/2012 11:57:32 PM
Lakers don't have the money to sign nash so it'd have to be a sign & trade. On one hand I'd hate to see the lakers become contenders again and I'd hate to have to root against nash. On the other hand I'd like to see Kobe bitch about having to take a backseat on offense. You just know new Orleans is gonna match for Eric Gordon, crazy deal he got.New jersey would've been better off letting deron walk and signing one of the fa pg like dragic for half the cost. Plus they are going to lose humphries because of this Joe Johnson fiasco. They are blowing their wad if they don't get dwight or at least ilyasova
7/4/2012 12:51:49 AM
Hollinger is saying the Nets have no shot at Howard via trade or as FA in 2013 due to their recent signings.
7/4/2012 1:28:55 AM
Yeah the nets have really shit themselves the more i look into this. They'll be decent but they really killed their chances with dwight Howard.First of all they traded the #6 pick in the draft for virtually nothing (2 months of Gerald wallace on a non playoff team?!) which was not only baffling and somethin only billy king could be dumb enough to do... But the #6 pick wouldve been a good trade asset and they needed to save cap space to take on turkoglu or richardson in a dwight package. The Joe Johnson trade couldn't have been uglier. Theyre going to probably lose their best player this offseason. They are now stuck with deron for $100 million... And they lost favors and kanter who are both developing into top young big men. Ew. Other than the reggie Evans coup, they've really piled on the dook.
7/4/2012 2:38:36 AM
Thing with Brooklyn, though...it's a bigger deal for them to be just not terrible than it is for them to actually be elite. Look across the river...mediocrity sells in NY as long as they're somewhat competitive. Being a perennial 4 or 5 seed is all they really need to be considered a success, at least for the first few honeymoon years.
7/4/2012 9:42:38 AM
Yeah I agree with that at least until the novelty wears off. But it sounds like they were a lock for dwight and blew it. Anyone think the Russian had a secret deal for dwights compensation behind the scenes?, seems likely given the shady way he made his billions
7/4/2012 4:22:42 PM
Did he make his money via insurance fraud?
7/4/2012 4:51:31 PM
Off topic a bit, but are NBA players allowed to play in sandals? Hear me out. Up until high school I wanted to play my games in Sandals, but my coach wouldn't let me. I thought they made me a little more agile, and cooled my feet off. NBA coaches have less control over players than on other levels, so my question is: Why don't more NBA players wear sandals during games? Is their a rule against them? Has anyone expressed interest in playing in sandals?I don't buy basketball shoes because I only play in sandals, but if they came out with Kobe, Durant, Lebron etc sandals I would definitely get them. It makes sense from a marketing stand point too.

Nash to the Lakers?Marc Stein ?@ESPNSteinLineJust going up online & via SportsCenter: Sources say Suns have consented to sign-and-trade Steve Nash to Lakers for package of future picks
7/4/2012 8:26:40 PM
I think they should let them play in roller skates
7/4/2012 8:30:00 PM
No he made his money thru kgb ties. Stole billions from the citizens by bribing to takeover the entire industry when the soviet union collapsed.Fucking Kobe going to try to ride Steve nash coattails to a 6th title. Kobe might actually shoot well this year if he isn't allowed to ball hog with nash there. I hate having to root against nash like this. Praying Scott brooks comes to his senses this year and they can still beat the lakers.
7/4/2012 9:28:53 PM
It's a done deal now. Kobe wants the 6th ring so badly.

If anyone's had a worse offseason than Houston I'd like to see it.They lost two star point guards (lowry, dragic) two quality players (dalembert, budinger), bungled three first round draft picks, and somehow still managed to be stuck with Luis scola. They acquired all those assets with the intention of moving them for stars, instead they are rapidly becoming one of the worst teams in the league.
7/5/2012 2:21:34 PM
They need to be one of the worst teams. They've constantly been just good enough and picking in the 11-15 range. They need to bottom out, its the only way to get better.
7/5/2012 2:34:18 PM
7/5/2012 2:43:52 PM
Dragic is not a star, but is highly underrated.
7/5/2012 3:41:27 PM
Houston is a shitty team, they didn't have any star PGs.
7/5/2012 3:57:20 PM
Lol, lowry was ELITE this year, check the stats. And dragic was awesome when lowry got hurt. Nba fans just assume everyone on a non playoff team must suck. And you're wrong on this one slave, Houston should have parlayed their assets into a contender. What was the point of stockpiling all this talent if they were going to dump all of it for nothing??Losing dragic and lowry is a disaster. In the meantime they're stuck with guys like scola and Kevin Martin that no one wants. They've gone from having the deepest young roster in the league to a roster with a bunch of crap + chandler parsons [Edited on July 5, 2012 at 4:51 PM. Reason : a]
7/5/2012 4:48:33 PM
Lowry was 30th amongst guards in scoring, behind ELITE players like Gerald Henderson and Arron Affalo. 11th in assists isn't bad. 47th amongst guards in assist to turnover ratio behind ELITE passers like JJ Redick, Jonny Flynn and Kemba. His stats aren't bad, but he's far from a star and far from elite. He isn't even Jarrett Jack or Ty Lawson, let alone someone who is actually an elite PG like Rondo or Paul.
7/5/2012 5:05:12 PM
Beg your pardon, Martin, they TRIED to turn their pieces into a star but it didn't work out. Now they're fucked. How good can you be when your best player looks like Russell Brand?

^^ this thread lost me earlier on this page when someone referred to "Marvin Williams' breakout season this year". ummmmmmm....no.
7/6/2012 9:39:29 AM
That was basically the point of my post up there. Face has a retarded metric for determining how good a player is. I'm sure these people are stars under faces metric but the reality is most of them are average starters out just average NBA players.
7/6/2012 10:01:03 AM
The Face algorithm, like sabremetrics, is good at identifying players with a lot of potential who have been overlooked for sometimes non-objective reasons. Jeremy Lin is a good example. The problem comes when Face uses the algorithm to compare star players to guys mired on the bench. They aren't comparable, and the smaller sample sizes skew the WP48 numbers.
