paging networks use simulcast messaging, meaning that the message is sent from every transmitter in the network at the same time. This is far more failsafe than cellular/SMS networks that are easily overloaded in times of crisis or high utilization. Also paging is far more reliable. Often times I get SMS messages from my wife that are delayed by anywhere from 20 minutes to several hours (rarely), but even several minutes can mean life or death in a hospital. combining the simulcast with multicast (sending pages to a specific group) is easier and more reliable, and everyone gets the same page at the same time. This is critical when codes are being called.Pagers (the ones used in hospitals anyway) are receive only. Cell phones are duplex devices, and can't be around certain types of medical equipment without disrupting it. Pagers don't have this restriction. So yeah, while it seems obvious that cell phones should obsolete pagers, it's definitely not the reality of the situation, at least in hospital environments.[Edited on June 17, 2012 at 11:20 PM. ^ That's much of the same reason that we can't use the same SMS technology for datalink... basically text messaging for aircraft. Too unreliable.[Edited on June 17, 2012 at 11:18 PM. Reason : f]

fax machines. yet they are still used all the time by gov and old business types. They are garbage, clunky, unreliable transmit flawed data use phased out transmit protocol are still the only "wire" transmissions legal types will accept. These same people have multiple email addresses capable of accepting secure pdf files. that send more data instantly with no artifacting and super low chance of tampering. yet its always "fax me this information instead of scanning it and emailing it. I dunno who has a fax machine either. this is our way of keeping our workload down and telling you to go fuck yourself, vicariously of course"

I recently signed some documents for a home purchase... i find it a bit troubling that you can just choose the signature that most looks like yours and insert it in PDF. Really takes the point out of having to sign something.

funfact: Faxes (and pages) have special status under HIPAA that allows them to be sent unencrypted. Because healthcare orgs are both incompetent and cheap most of them stick to using faxes for patient data communications because secure email is too hard to setup/use and webservices are unproven future tech in their eyes. The best tho is that most of the larger healthcare orgs have fax gateways so the workflow usually goes email -> fax gateway -> unsecure phone liune -> destination fax gateway -> email to destination mailbox. Also, since there is no way to do destination confirmation the sender has no idea if they're sending it to a wrong number. If they are told that they've sent patient data to the wrong number the most common next step is to try to send it again to the same wrong number.

ob·so·lete/?äbs?'let/Adjective: No longer produced or used; out of date.ob·so·lete (bs-lt, bs-lt)adj.1. No longer in useobsolescent does not equal obsoleteunless you want to get into some kind of semantics argument (which I know you do, because you're an asshole like that), you might consult every single dictionary's first entry on the definition of obsolete again
6/19/2012 12:14:49 AM
basically you're saying CDs are no longer in use, or being producedand you would be wrongso you can keep trying as hard as you want, but you're still incorrect
6/19/2012 12:15:35 AM
So go ahead and name one thing that is obsolete by that strict definition. Because so far every single thing named in this thread is still being produced in some quantity.[Edited on June 19, 2012 at 12:18 AM. Reason : also double post suspend/ban/terminate/90th trimester abortion plz.]
6/19/2012 12:17:14 AM
actually, the part you didn't bold kinda proves you wrong"Obsolete refers to something that is already disused or discarded, or antiquated."you MIGHT be able to argue that they're antiquatedbut they're certainly in fairly heavy use and not discarded
