If electricity no longer exists in this universe, how do neurons still fire?
9/6/2012 11:46:47 PM
^ it doesn't really make any sense, and never can. Electrical fields are fundamental to more things than just gadgets (of course we all know this).BUt, if they're consistent with it, it could work in the show. Also, there is an island that apparently does have electricity, if the teaser is to be believed.
9/7/2012 12:39:07 AM
So many plot holes in just the first 10 mins of the show that its just unbearable to watch. At least Gus brings the dry, ghostly death threat acting with perfection, just not enough to counter Mr. Vampire Diaries son with a crossbow... Seriously, Mr. Stargate Atlantis Dad should have punched his son in the face, taken the crossbow away and made him cry in the corner. I could have believed some EM interference that makes certain electronics not work all over the world, but batteries? Like everyone said... wtf? Life would not exist without these 'simple' chemical reactions. I mean I could believe a world going back to 1850's, maybe steampunk it up or better yet, dystopian future based on 1950's tech like fallout, but whatever.
9/7/2012 2:39:26 AM
Haven't watched it yet (has it already aired on TV?) but based on your comments it sounds pretty stupid. If all electricity is dead would that mean that all magnets are dead too? You can easily make electricity through basic application of magnets and magnetism is right up there next to gravity in terms of "Major forces in the universe that will exist until the end of time".

Or gets taken off the air after 4 episodes then its going to be just release on web... which I wouldn't mind since I don't watch normal TV.
9/7/2012 10:10:04 AM
this was pretty lame
9/18/2012 6:44:34 AM
I wasnt too fascinated by the pilot. None of the characters interest me either. Ill probably give it another shot but this one might end up in thr discard pile
9/18/2012 7:28:02 AM
i watched last night and my exact words to my girlfriend were "i'm not putting much faith in the show but i'll watch it going forward." granted it was 1 episode but i have my doubts. i like both apocalypse and post-apoc movies/shows so i'll give it a shot since nothing else on in that time-slot. but i feel like it will become more of watching for the sake of watching and not really being drawn into the show.
9/18/2012 7:45:03 AM
pretty meh, but I'll give it a few more shots
9/18/2012 8:26:23 AM
Some posters are commenting on EMPs, but the shoele never says that's what it is. They say it is something that, among other things, "messes with physics".I did not like the pilot, I thought it was dumb.
9/18/2012 9:02:09 AM
^Yea I am somewhat interested in what is doing this and what the writers devise as this physics killer, but more than that I am just pissed off that they somehow wrote a plot device that interferes with fucking chemical reactions. Massive EMP, okay I can get that, like in Jericho. That killed a lot of modern devices and fried shit. But oh noes batteries don't work, windmills don't work, solar panels don't work, internal combustion engines don't work. Get the fuck outta here.
9/18/2012 10:29:52 AM
^ but yet at the end of the episode with the woman in the attic, her magical necklace/bracelet thing allowed the computer to turn on and boot up magical energy force-field anti-warding device??
9/18/2012 10:57:28 AM
Magical interwebs that works along great distances with only the fucking pendant. Yea they did at least try use a dial-up sound effect, but that phone connection has to have switching gear and shit.
9/18/2012 10:59:24 AM
I was hoping for a new Jericho, instead I watched a new Jeremiah
9/18/2012 11:43:00 AM
the pilot was really bad and dumb
9/18/2012 2:06:37 PM
The show was almost non-watchable. He wont go...they leave...he gets approached by the militia....they save him after he kills 200 militia single-handidly....the bow guy saves her after turning them all in to begin with, then runs off.....then all of a sudden, he decides to go with them in the end...First the Hunger games, now this.....I predict the next teen fashion sensation will be urban style with bow and arrows. Its gonna replace the Vampires and Warewolves trend.
9/18/2012 4:52:07 PM
9/19/2012 12:16:39 AM
Two lines into the pilot the mom says something to the degree of "It's happening, isn't it?!" and I almost turned it off right then and there. The commercials spoiled that the daughter was going to end up an orphan and I didn't want to watch a show about some teenage girl slowly discovering some secret past about her family (I liked the way Heroes slowly revealed Noah Bennett's backstory, but no other show has really impressed me that way).
9/19/2012 4:52:06 AM
It certainly wasn't good, but for all it's faults it was the best Scifi premiere I've seen on network tv in a long time.
9/19/2012 7:41:42 AM
so how long until we find out Nate is actually Capt. Neville's son?it didn't completely suck, and for that it'll buy a few more weeks of my attention.
9/19/2012 8:16:51 AM
Finally got around to watching it last night and I lolled at a few things. So these people are without any source of electricity, but they still somehow are able to have a ton of make up because all those girls were looking like they were in pretty good shape considering the circumstances. I would expect everyone to be dirty and wearing kinda ragged clothes but they were all totally clean with brand new clothes. Nobody even looked hungry. And if they were completely unable to generate electricity, where the hell is all the steam powered stuff? Steam engines are seriously just: Step 1) Burn coal/wood to boil water 2) Use pressurized steam to move shit. A modern day understanding of mechanics could probably make a pretty efficient steam powered car and other stuff. Hell I'm sure a bunch of steam punk nerds have already created some stuff like that. If the physics are so messed up that water won't boil then I don't know how anyone is still alive. Yet the chemical reactions used for guns are still totally working.

No, I don't know that it is TV. I have never watched TV before.V Not all steampunk fans are kids. There are plenty of middle aged engineers and scientists who are into steampunk, I've met a few myself.[Edited on September 19, 2012 at 9:59 AM. Reason : ]
9/19/2012 9:52:17 AM
you think steampunk kids can actually make steam powered devices?
9/19/2012 9:54:40 AM
Have you seen how hardcore steam punk kids are? They could do it.
9/19/2012 9:55:37 AM
are they really hardcore or just like to dress Steampunk?
9/19/2012 10:06:58 AM
I met a dude once that made a steam powered hair dryer just for the fun of it. He's an extreme case and the thing sounded/smelled like it was about to explode but it worked. If some random dude with a workshop in his garage can do that I'm sure the world's leading scientists and engineers would be able to figure something out.
9/19/2012 10:12:51 AM
They had windmills.I don't remember anything about saying steam wasn't available either.
9/19/2012 10:17:23 AM
Steampunk is the dumbest nerd fad ever, those nerds don't know how to make anything real.
9/19/2012 10:40:04 AM
they seem to have lost all creature comforts...except for makeup. gotta have makeup.[Edited on September 19, 2012 at 10:51 AM. Reason : hah saw this posted earlier...yeah it's tv, but the makeup isn't muted in the slightest.]
9/19/2012 10:49:59 AM
its supposed to by 15 years after? i bet they'd be able to get working steam engines together for use in rail and boats. maybe even cars. im not talking about goofy steampunk crap, but real world steam powered stuff that existed before electricity. ultimately none of that matters though and the "scifi" is a backdrop for the drama. and the drama sucks.
9/19/2012 12:28:38 PM
So this show is awful, and I accept that, but I'm going to keep watching just to see how they explain away this power-outage stuff, and generally to just make fun of it. But back to it being awful.. I really liked the part in the beginning of the pilot where the planes had lost 'power' so their engines stopped working, yet all the plane's navigation lights were still on. Yes, I get that the show's producers needed the audience to SEE the planes falling out of the sky, something that would be very hard to do in the pitch-black of night with no lights. It's still retarded. Never mind that this yet-to-be-explained EMP phenomenon can evidently also induce flat-spins in already moving aircraft. I also think it hilarious that the US Government collapsed all because it didn't have electricity. It's a good thing that this country had electricity in 1776, or else we might all still be British subjects.[Edited on September 19, 2012 at 12:29 PM. Reason : .]
I came in here to post that the barking dog in the pilot is my Mom's neighbor's. They were paid $400, and the only requirement was that he could bark on demand. But then I saw this:
9/19/2012 12:47:54 PM
i gave it a shot and it was horriblethe acting was terrible and i was hoping that the son of the dude that got killed also died the entire time

No enforcement of laws without sustained electricity in this country. Can't even keep people in the jails or prisons, show up to crimes, make arrests, etc. All financial, medical, educational systems would fail without computers. Cars wouldn't run.[Edited on September 19, 2012 at 1:38 PM. Reason : ]
9/19/2012 1:37:05 PM
power's out? better start rapin'
9/19/2012 2:29:10 PM
the federal government would collapse for sure. no one would give a shit about anything happening outside their general location. without electricity or transportation theres no communication. they'd eventually be able to get things back up to like horse/train era, but even then the delays are huge. so that part of the show isnt completely unbelievable. also its not unbelievable that army officers would try to organize security forces to provide some level of law and order in their regions and then eventually devolve into less organized or benevolent militias
9/19/2012 2:32:19 PM
I don't think it would collaps, I just don't think it would have much influence in areas outside of the capital and maybe a few areas they want to project their strength. (e.g. Afghanistan or other destabilized, tribal countries)
9/19/2012 2:56:40 PM
it might still exist in the dc area in some form, but it would effectively disapear from the rest of the world. would representatives even stick around, or would they go back home to try to take care of family?
9/19/2012 3:38:58 PM
In their world, I would like to make a paper airplane, throw it and see it fly like a foot, hit an invisible barrier, crumple the nose, fall straight down, roll on the floor and burst into flames... then a detail shot of a little kid crying... lolz
9/19/2012 3:39:38 PM
^^ DC?? Hahaha, oh god no, DC would fall apart the quickest.
9/19/2012 3:41:05 PM
Yeah, I doubt DC would survive. I mean cities with a strong presence of local natural resources like fishing or agriculture would have a higher chance of survival, but you will still have a mass amount of people leave the city once the US dollar goes the way of the dodo. I mean its hard to think what would work when physics itself stops working and the show does a horrible job at explaining it, yet shows things that shouldn't work... work...
9/19/2012 3:50:50 PM
I'm sure someone has mentioned it, but somehow this is worse than Terra Nova
9/19/2012 6:31:31 PM
I was shocked to find out that was in Wet Hot American Summer.[Edited on September 19, 2012 at 8:12 PM. Reason : -]

This show reminds me a lot of Flash Forward. Apocalyptic, mysterious "blackouts", bad acting, and it will probably get canned the same way just as it starts getting interesting.
