Looking at getting a new set for the Lexus. Fronts still look good, but the rears are on the wear bars.

Bridgestone has a $70 rebate on a set of 4, and Tire Rack has their Potenza RE970AS Pole Position as ranked #1 in the Ultra High Performance All-Season category.

I'm looking at $814 for 4 tires and about $55 for shipping.

But to get them mounted... Hmm... I need to find a cheap/reputable place for that.

$800 on tires, OTD is pretty decent, especially since sales tax on tires is rediculous. But is there a shop that will mount, balance, dispose of old tire for <$20/tire after tax and shop fees?

Not sure man. My Dunlops from Tirerack were $676. From Discount they were $708. Shipping from Tirerack was $61 and then there was the issue of where to get them mounted, etc etc.

The TPMS warning light came on in my car recently and I didn't think it was a big deal considering it has been getting colder in San Antonio (from 105 F to 80 F). However, when I checked the tire pressure the rear right tire had dropped to 20 psi compared to 30 psi for the other tires (recommended 35 psi), is it normal for 1 tire to drop so low over a couple days or is this a leak?

I'm not happy with the Yokos on the car, they are slippery in rain...any recommendations?

you didn't tell us make/model, so it's hard to recommend tires, but we put a set of Continental ExtremeContact DWS on my wife's 06 TL and we're very happy with them. they do great in the rain.

Continental ExtremeContact DWS. They are fantastic All Season tire. I highly recommend them, though they do have pretty soft sidewalls. Not an issue for your average daily commuter/driver, but as a gearhead I'd like something with a bit stiffer sidewalls for better steering feedback.

Bridgestone RE970AS Pole Position are the best all around All Season tires from what I hear. The DWS has an edge in light snow conditions and treadwear, but the Pole Positions fair slightly better in the rest of the categories.

I would recommend both of these, money no object and sizes permitting.

yes it is normal. 10psi is a little extreme but i have seen it. if you were busy one day driving around and the temp was warm then but you parked it and the temp dropped significantly then its pretty normal. i deal with this crap every year about this time. people think something is wrong with their car but dont pay attention to the air temp and they dont relize air contracts and expands along with it

Can anyone offer a testimonial for a good all-season small-suv tire (215/60-16)? I'm looking for 4-season tires that handle well and aren't noisy. Long-life not a huge priority.

wife says her tires slide around too much in the rain... i have conti dws on my car and they don't slide at all... but my car is awd so that makes a HUGE difference...

do you think anything will be a legit improvement over stock soul tires in the rain...
or do you think its just that she drives my car in rain and then hers and can't figure out where the understeer comes from?

^^ I've got the dws on mine and they're great in the rain (fwd). Obviously pushing them will induce slip but less so than the other tires I've tried on it (2007 Civic Si). I can't imagine a Soul sliding around on them unless they're just worn out.

Maybe you guys can provide some insight into my tire search. I am cross-shopping a number of tires at TireRack for the new AP2 wheels I'm putting on my S2000. I am looking for something with good dry/warm grip first, with other priorities being price, tread life, handling feel (sidewall), and wet grip - in that order. I realize that Star Specs are glorified in the S2000 community, but I would like to (I know, I know) find a tire under the $600 mark for all 4. These tires will see DD duty along with, say, 2 Auto-X events and one track day per year. I am open to suggestions (though not everything is available in S2000 sizes), but have mainly been considering:

Hankook RS-3.
Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2
BFG Sport Comp 2
Continental ExtremeContact DW
Kumho Ecsta XS

Thoughts?

The XS has a very stiff sidewall, as does the R-S3. I've driven my Miata with the XS through some crappy weather, snow/ice from VIR back to the OBX for instance, along with tons of rain and while it's ok they can lose forward traction very easily. They have worn relatively well for the grip they provide and the alignment I have, but I think I have heat cycled them too much at this point.

Dry grip I'd put the Hankook first, Kumho second, then Conti, Goodyear, and finally BFG. Sidewall stiffness I'd swap the kook and Kumho and leave the rest. For that little track use with the rest being dd duty I think the Conti is the best option, but if it's a second car then go with the Hankook.

Really no point in choosing the Hancooks over the Star Specs. Their tread depth is 2 32nds shallower, so any perceived value you think you got from a cheaper purchase price will be offset by their shorter lifespan.

I can't really speak to the others, except that the SS has beaten the Kumho in every tire comparo they've been in. You should ask around over on http://www.s2ki.com. And are you talking $600 installed or just for the tires themselves?

I was talking just for the tires. Tread depth being what it may, I have heard from a number of different places that the lifespan of RS3s over mixed use is a fair bit longer than Star Specs. I'm sure that this varies by the user, but I have heard pretty consistently that people are disappointed with the lifespan of Star Specs and pleasantly surprised with the lifespan of the RS3.

I ran the star specs on my SRT, actually two sets of them. I don't feel like their wet grip was all that much better than the XSs, but they are a little less sharp as well. A better dd tire than the XS, but not drastically enough to make me get them over the XS. The Contis are what I have now on the SRT and while I don't have a lot of miles on them yet they are softer (and look a touch wider, oddly) on input than the SS but wet grip is way up. The Hankook shouldn't last as long as the SS, but the XS should be similar to the SS.

I have a set of Dunlop Star Specs on my AP1 S2000 (in OEM sizes) and have loved them so far. However, everything I've read says to avoid the Hankook for daily driver tires, that they're a nightmare in wet weather compared to the Dunlops.

I know it's subjective, but I like the Dunlops enough that I just ordered a set of 255/40/R17's for my M3. They are a bit expensive though, I'll give you that.

Just going off what I've read over on the S2000 forum the SS's last longer than the RS3. In my personal experience the SSs lasted me 24,000 miles which included 4 track days.

Depends how you look at it. They're $300+ cheaper than the OEM Bridgestones while handily outperforming them. They're around $500-600 cheaper than the top Michelin tires, while almost matching their performance.

Brett (RedCelica on S2KI) got less than 10k out of his last set - stock AP2, stock sizes. I have heard anything up to 18,000 before, 24,000 is impressive if you really went to 3 track days - I know Brett's included 1 track day and 3 dragon trips.

^^2 HDPEs. 2 days at CMP and 2 days at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Also punished the tires with track only brake pads. At 24,000 miles the rear wear indicators had been flush with the tread for about 2 months, and the inside 3rd of both front tires were completely slick. Only had the suspension aligned twice while using those tires.

I think I'm between the Pilot Sports (or Super Sports) and Discount Tires' exclusive tire which they replaced the DWS with, the Conti Control Contact Sport A/S...supposedly they're better than the DWS.

I had Pilot Sports (original, not PS2s) on my Z06. I didn't care for them; the grip wasn't there and they had SEVERE wheel hop issues. Like, could pretty much never apply full throttle in 1st or 2nd, unless maybe if you rolled into it so gently that it was nearly time to shift by the time you reached WOT. I replaced them with Nitto NT-05s and it was completely different car. I ran NT-05s for several more sets, for street, track, and autocross. I finally put a less aggressive, more GT-type tire on for the last set, as I wasn't tracking it and I was driving a shitload of miles. I think they were still better than the Pilot Sports. In fairness, the Pilots were on the older side. Maybe the compound had gotten a little aged? I don't know, they weren't dry rotted and weren't tracked and overly heat cycled, so that's still not much of an excuse in my opinion.

I had Star Specs on my second (stock, AP1) S2000. They were OK. I found them to break away kind of abruptly. I also got <10k miles on them for at least 2 sets, maybe 3. I can't remember...and that's with zero track days or autocrosses. I did find out that the car had a cracked suspension bushing, so maybe I can lay some of the blame there.


Yoko Advans were really good on my Evo IX. I like the Nitto NT-01s pretty well on my 7, too, but I haven't had any other tires on that car, and that car isn't really a good comparison with any other car.
