onions and tomato are condiments (think ketchup, pickles, etc), cuz, no one makes an onion sandwich or a tomato sandwich, do they? they are always added for flavor.but once you start adding any animal flesh, then that ingredient becomes the main focus of the sandwich.

I was there for 2 years... anyway, yes, you can make a tomato sandwich, or even a fried onion sandwich, which would actually be amazing. But my point stands, tomatoes and onions are almost always used to add flavor, not as main ingredients on their own.Forgot to say, I also add some finely chopped garlic to mine. The mix of garlic flavor infusing into the melted cheese is heavenly.

I don't doubt their existenceI just don't know folks that eat them (or actually admit to it)

That's not what I meant. It's just that they're predominantly a farming family kind of food. The type you walk out into your garden, pick a tomato, and make a sandwich. I just don't see you as the type that knows a lot of eastern nc farmers, so it doesn't surprise me that you wouldn't know anyone who admits to eating these.[Edited on April 15, 2012 at 11:24 AM. Reason : But we digress, this thread is about cheese sandwiches, which everyone can know and enjoy.]

I love tomato sandwiches. Grew up eating them at my grandparent's house in Wilmington. They had a huge garden and always an abundance of tomato in the summer time. And for breakfast or in between breakfast/lunch snack don't forget the tomato biscuit. Just as good if not better than the tomato sandwich.Of course either of these things are only going to be as good as the tomato.

elise eats tomato sandwiches and spent a whole damned summer a couple years ago posting about it.

divababy19, i am pretty sure you have commented on the fact that I eat tomato sandwiches.Sandwich rounds, dukes mayo, tomato, and a sprinkle of salt if needed. But back to.grilled cheeses, i think i might need to grill up some sort of crusty bread with brie and some smashed up berries

For your basic grilled cheese, one trick I've found is to slather the bread with mayo before grilling. It gives the bread a nice crust.Other than that, variations are what I call the Caprese:. You use mozzarella cheese, fresh tomato slices, basil leaves. Pepperoni can be added to make a pizza grilled cheese.Another variation is to use colby jack cheese, shredded chicken, jalapeno pepper slices, and mushroom slices.

So mayo is better than butter?
11/23/2020 9:54:26 PM
I made grilled cheese sandwiches yesterday. Got it down to like 4 minutes for 2 sanwiches. I use mayo instead of butter. It is a northern think from what my mother says[Edited on November 23, 2020 at 11:30 PM. Reason : ^^yep use mayo instead of butter. I have since a child. I think butter is better, but mayo is easier]
11/23/2020 11:29:00 PM
Better? That's debatable. Sometimes, I just don't want the full richness of butter. Mayo does the trick though. And like StTexan noted, it's a bit easier.[Edited on November 24, 2020 at 7:26 AM. Reason : J]
