yeah this game is incredibly refreshing for an mmo. The skill/weapon system is great. I'm not a huge fan of the level scaling (especially in PVP) but thats really my own complaint. It is kind of annoying that its easier to go to different starting levels and do the quests, get gold on every event and level faster than the shit you're supposed to be doing because that kind of kills all the replay value outside of having a different char with different skillz but whatever run on sentences are the shit fuck you

I'm a couple hours into a Charr Warrior and liking it so far. Your weapons changing what your skills do is... weird, just weird, but cool at the same time. I equipped a new weapon and realized SHIT GOT DIFFERENT YO.

The "world events" you can participate in are pretty fun and smooth. Everything looks great, but I was having a hard time finding a sense of flow at the start. The sort of "half cut scenes" where it's really just a verbal dialogue between your character (that speaks... oh damn!) and an NPC is refreshing. Hope to see better stuff as I move on.

But mostly I just want to level up enough to PvP. I know it's scaled, but I'm not going to PvP with level 5 shit.

Skills changing per weapon is a little weird, but I'm getting used to it. I was dual-wielding a sword/axe, and that was one set of skills, then I switched them between hands, and a new set of skills came up. Gah!

So far so good though. The Human zone is incredibly pretty, the combat system is different and challenging but fun, and the story isn't completely retarded.

^^^ pvp (in the 10v10 sense) just puts you at 80 and gives you different pvp specific gear (which you level up...by playing pvp). wvw is a diff story.

eh? I did pvp at lvl 8 and had all utility skills unlocked. I didn't try using weapons I hadn't unlocked yet.

Perhaps tournaments are a different story, but ArenaNet basically said they didnt want you to have to PVE if you didn't want to.

REQUEST DENIED.

if we want to complain, ill say for all the fast travel options, it woulda be nice to have a way to quickly meet up with friends who are accross the server in a different area. yes it makes sense i need to explore, but at the same time, there are so many travel locations that it just makes it hard to join my lvl 15 buddy who is in the other lvl 15-25 area.

I switched from Mesmer to Thief and enjoy the thief alot better, althought it cant handle multiple mobs (4+) as well, it still decimates 1v1.

I really like how crafting gives exp. I did a couple of discoveries and some regular crafting and made almost 2 levels.

My 1 complaint is that my server gets roflstomps in WvW (Sea of Sorrows). Do they rotate the servers from time to time? I didnt think they were the same from start.

How casual friendly is this game? If I can get some money out of D3 I'll use that toward buying this. I won't feel satisfied with my time in D3 if I can't get $$ out of it so trying to wrap that up first before switching over because I feel like once I do I won't look back. But not sure how much time I'll have to play going forward.

Oh and I'm big on WvW and PvP, that is what I'd be looking to do pretty much exclusively.

i didn't really like the engineer, so I started up an ele last night

holy jesus what fun...and amazing depth

you can hotswap attunements between earth, air, fire, and water as you progress (with cooldowns to swap back)

there are not just different skills for each element, but also for a multitude of weapon sets you can carry. so a staff has different skills from a wand has different skills from a dagger.

i barely scratched the surface last night in a couple hours, but I think ele will be my main

Server choice doesn't matter since you will eventually be able to "guest" with friends on other server. It allows you to group together and do instances. The only restriction is you can WvW with people on your server.

Did anyone get perma-banned (72 hours) for legally exploiting the game? Lokken and I have been coming to blows over whether Kripparian should have been banned for streaming that there was an exploit then taking advantage of it behind a blacked out stream.

People got perma-banned for simply buying karma items. They were priced very low, but they did nothing but buy them.

Arenanet has acted pretty incompetently with this whole thing. They clearly don't understand what the word 'exploit' means.

You dont ban people that gave you 60 dollars for your game less than a week ago, especially not in the thousands, for finding shit that your company fucked up on.

You say whoops, fix it, and remove items/gold if you think it is excessive.

^perma ban and 72 hours arent the same thing. People got their accounts PERMANENTLY banned.

They are now saying if you write them and promise not to do it again and destroy the items they will change it to a 72 hour ban. (i.e. they are stepping back because they know they fucked up)

its like they try to find the most incompetent way to handle it

lord this game is massive. i'm up to level 20 and have only gone to 2 zones. the change in mechanics for things like exploration and storage are nice. being able to dump stacking items into your vault from anywhere helps a lot. having all the POI's and stuff visible on the map from scouts instead of scraping every last corner like GW1 is a big plus

I have some gripes - like monster respwan. even with a decent group of people, you can get caught from behind by respawns when fighting some tougher enemies.

I'm also not a big fan of fixed skills for slots 1-5. it takes away the cunning skill bars that made GW1 so much fun. finding ways to change the meta even existed in PvE in GW1 (SoS, Heroway, etc).

but I'm hooked. love the game. love the visuals. love the ties back to GW1. it's so much fun going through areas and seeing the remains of the old tyria

shrug im having a good time. do i feel i need to be on every second like other games that have pulled me in in the past? no. do i enjoy structured pvp, wvw, and pve all so far? absolutely.

this feels much easier to play casually while still having some cool non-casual stuff.

As much as I like the Secret World, I didn't pick up another month, and won't until I burn out on GW2--very very fun, love the pacing. Although I will say that I'm less interested now that I'm past level 25 and there's no apparent "next zone" for Charr. I eventually found out there's a 25-35 near Lion's Arch that's neutral--but shouldn't they drop a hint for you, steer you there somehow?

Actually, that was my biggest complaint so far. The characters and the quests are very "in the environment" and there's a good story, but the story feels HIDDEN because I DON'T KNOW THE BACKGROUND AT ALL. The game is great if you played Guild Wars--but I didn't. I didn't know FUCK about Ascalon or what happened there, and the game never says, only "fuck those ghosts of the humans we killed!" 1-25 Charr no one ever gave ANY background on anything other than the name of the Ghost King. Someone MENTIONED the Searing, but without context. No one says WHO the Flame Legion are, only that they're "traitors." We don't hear why Ascalon is pumping out ghosts, even though apparently it's super common knowledge to other players that the Foefire cause it--but the game never mentions the Foefire! Yeah it's in a dungeon and you probably find out about it then, but if it's a critical part of the Charr's place in Ascalon and their fight against ghost humans, I feel like I should have heard about it in passing.

I don't know. This goes beyond slowly revealing the story and into poorly written/planned territory. That was one thing WoW did--they found an "in context" and "in character" way to reveal backstory and to explain who you were fighting and why. And not just WoW, lots of other MMOs and games in general. I shouldn't have to read a wiki just to find out the basics. Obviously not all that many people want to drown in lore (neither do I), but they're not putting enough out there.

...but I could hardly care because the characters and environments themselves are very well done, and the game is too much fun.

^^ i agree. im the kind of guy that doesnt mind THAT much, but some context would be nice. I will say that if you do the personal story, that they usually dump you in the next area. my story took me to a 25-30 zone then to a 30-40 zone.

^ i had the same problem til i swapped servers to be with my buddy. havent had a queue since.

yeah i did that with the human zone. was going to 100% it but got bored raping everything.

you can get pretty decent XP considering. kind of like crafting. i got a level and a half (37->39) by crafting after i was "done for the day."

it isn't crack like some other games, but i actually feel like I WANT to play it when i do.

they did a good job hitting most of the main points players would want to start playing for.

pvp - i've only really done WvW as it was the main draw into the game for me. The zones are very spread out and the worlds i was on have typically always been losing, so I didn't learn about the multiple waypoints in a WvW battleground right away.

melee fighters need to have better mitigation going into a pvp fight to avoid getting dropped just trying to navigate the mass of aoe to get in range. there are a couple gap closers, but due to the ease of slowing players down it isn't enough in terms of a balance. probably why most everyone just stays at range.

leveling is easy enough, with a mix between crafting, questing, killing, exploring, and pvp have all helped keep it from being boring leveling.

dungeons, i've only done the ascalonian catacombs and it was rough. some fights less balanced than others, but challenging - which made them fun.

only problem i've seen is making money.
they game wants to keep you perpetually poor.
crafting materials sell for next to nothing.
rare items sell for next to nothing.
the only way to make any money is to do events, but unless you find one that is repeating very often in one area and you're not dying to it, travelling the map is costly. (2s to travel to most high end zones from lions arch)

It will be a fun game to pick up and play more from time to time though.

Just give them a couple expansions, in the original GW it was extremely difficult to make money/get good equipment. By the final expansion it was incredibly easy, to the point at which things only had value based on looks, and consumables were the only thing worth 2 cents.

i had an easier time when i started using the trading posts a lot more.

however, upon getting about 87% total map completion and finding barriers for completing zones with glitches in tasks I am taking a break due to borderlands 2 and torchlight 2.

hopefully they get a lot resolved in the next couple weeks/months

Anyone NOT still playing it and want to give me some gold? Or I can trade WoW gold for GW2 gold. I think the rate is 12k WoW gold for 30g in GW2.

They have a guild recruitment forum on official forums and then there is gw2guilds.org. Also you can use gw2lfg.com to find a dungeon/zerg group at anytime. Since groups and guilds aren't restricted to the same world for pve, you can group with anyone in NA.

Anyone still playing this? I finally picked it up last week when I need some time to kill. I'm level 23; feels like I've barely scratched the surface of the two zones I've been in so far. I'm playing a thief with skills/traits improving conditions. Bleeds (death blossom) do a ton of damage, but I'm thinking maybe I should build some vitality (or toughness?) to up my survivability a bit. Being able to inflict massive damage to multiple enemies doesn't really matter if I get nuked down in a couple seconds. Traps help a lot, but sometimes I still die quickly.

i was bored when it was released so i did alright. 100% every zone i was in until i maxed out. i figured i could do another char the same way in the various other zones, but man was it played out after 1 playthrough. there just didnt seem to be any character and the pvp wasn't fun enough to make it last.

not bad, just not good enough.
