first off this is old and not relevant anymore...yes durham is still gutter and more gutter than any other city in NC if u ask me and can vouch for that shit....but durham as the problem that this video depicts is not the circumstance anymore as most of those dudes in that video are dead or locked up...the crime rate drop rapidly after 06 with the new Police Chief Jose Lopez from NY and ramping up deputies in the DPD so shit has been relatively quiet since then though? we had our few spurts of bsas for u out-of-town niggaz talking greasy on youtube(e-thugging is a new fad) keep ur ass where u at....if i remember correctly itz mostly u punk ass ny niggaz running from up top to down here to escape the bullshit yall are caught up in there and how the fuck can u talk about going to the west coast and them? niggaz dont even respect ya 5 and 6 star 5pct jacking UBN/b/c/gd/f bullshit?...and for any matter regardless of what said of the map u from we niggaz are niggaz regardless

RaceRaleigh is 62% white; Durham is 43% white.Raleigh is 11% hispanic; Durham is 14.5% hispanic.Raleigh is 29% black; Durham is 39% black.IncomeRaleigh mean household income = $49,931, 13.9% below poverty levelDurham mean household income = $45,525, 14.7% below poverty levelThis is from 2010 1-year ACS data. If I had more time I'd look to see how this has changed over time. There's differences, but I'm sure there are nice parts of Durham. I don't know much about housing in Durham but I would imagine there are some good deals out there.

Durham > Raleigh.
2/3/2012 10:17:17 AM
^^ so far everyone who has said anything of the sort qualifies that with a "I'd guess" or "probably" indicating that they don't have a fucking clue... much like yourself.Durham has some bad parts, the vast majority of the city is as safe as Raleigh with less sprawl and fewer strip malls.

People unfamiliar with an area are quick to say "_____ has some good spots" while people with knowledge of the area will say "_______ has some bad spots." Its simply ignorance.I always liked living in Raleigh, but I love living in Durham.
2/3/2012 10:37:23 AM
This thread reminds me of the people who still think NYC is the same as it was in the 80s and dangerous. Just ignorance more than anything else..

so basically what i've taken from this thread about Durham is there is a consensus that you could possibly be murdered if you go shopping in Rocky Mount
2/3/2012 10:40:54 AM
The OP isn't saying Durham is "just as nice" as the other cities in NC according to WASP-standards. It's saying that when people play the whole "oo don't go to Durham it's not safe" bullshit, it's not thoughtful recognition of the legitimate social problems in Durham. It's simple-minded classism and middle-class snobbery, with a bit of obvious (though not necessarily proud) racism tossed in. Shit like the Simba picture is only funny to people who deem it appropriate to laugh at the conditions of ghettos, as if they're a fact of life, an inevitability of nature, or a product of black peoples' intrinsic traits, rather than the creation of a culture which has, from day one, heavily exploited and ignored the needs of people of color.

I live in Rocky Mount (not that great a city either) and was broken into and robbed of all my electronics about five years ago. I talked to a co-worker that's lived in Rocky Mount forever and I said I'd go around to the pawns to see if I can find any of my stuff. He told me "your stuff is in Durham". I asked "how do you know?" He said "all stolen goods get sent to Durham".

Dude, this "don't go to Durham, it's dangerous!" shit has got to stop. It's ridiculous! Yeah I am sure it is funny. But when you glance at the socioeconomic background and the type of people that live in those neighborhoods, you realize how much shit you're giving this area. It is a symbol of economic injustice and the 'them vs. us' mentality that persists in our national attitude. Be happy about your place in society...class-consciousness needs to happen in this country, bad. What a damned shame.

I've never had anyone give me trouble to my face, just be upfront with people. I grew up in Havelock and I learned there how to present myself to not invite trouble. If you're a woman admittedly it's harder to do that when on your own. When I got robbed I was gone for an extended weekend, done by a group of teenagers that were caught a couple months later by the police.

"durham is dangerous" threads have officially surmounted all other troll thread topics, including the prevously unbeaten BBQ juggernautthere are just so many possible avenues to go down in durham threads

^^You forgot to add a ^Tipping threads are still king in trolling department.

Barely skimmed this thread; probably just a big eyeroll. The thing I like about Durham is actually the people that don't come here because of these "it's too dangerous" beliefs and the people that waste time making Lion King photoshops (which is going around on Facebook and I'm sure it's in the thread already). I also like the fact that almost all the time I go out, I see somebody I know. It's a lot more quaint and familiar than informal and bustled like Raleigh. Personally I think people in Raleigh (that mostly espouse these shitty attitudes about Durham) need the media and law enforcement to hold their hands. It's basically what BobbyDigital was saying about those folks scared of certain demographics or something. I don't know if people are trying to rely on stuff like that so they don't have to use common sense these days or whatever else the case may be, but I'm pretty settled on not having to deal with the (mostly) Raleigh outsider crowd that hates this place.

i hate durham's extreme liberal populationthats about it
2/3/2012 2:20:27 PM

I grew up in Durham and currently live in rocky mount. They're both crappy, but not as bad as their reputations. Most of the people I knew in Durham didn't mind the reputation; it kept Durham from turning into Cary. Honestly I've never not gone somewhere in either city due to fear. I carry a gun everywhere, but this was the case before I started carrying. It really is all about how someone sees you. If you walk around like you're gonna bust a cap in the first mitherfucker that looks at you then you'll be less likely to be a target.
