Lucas has lost all credibility. I have so much respect for the real Tuskegee Airmen, they deserve better than Jar Jar Lucas. If a credible director/producer had taken this project, I bet it could have been good. If Ridley Scott, or hell even Spielberg who sucks lately, did this project as a serious war film meant to truly honor these men, it could have been good. Instead we get Lucas crap. For the record, Im still going to see it and give my full report, but it looks like I called this back in July 2011. The air combat scenes look atrocious and may actually be more cartoonish than Flyboys. It kills me that they could have used a FEW real restored planes (there are still flyable aircraft or replica aircraft of European air war WWII aircraft) and used CGI for background stuff, and the scenes would have looked so much more real. The best thing that will come from this is that lucas has said this his is last blockbuster movie. He wants to focus on smaller projects. This movie is just an excuse to make Star Wars all over again.

i feel the same way about going to see this movie as i did about watching the blind side.

^^Michael Oher said his only criticism of The Blind Side was that the scene where he grabbed the pass rusher and threw him over the fence never happenedI doubt a Tuskegee airman would have the same praise for this movie
1/20/2012 3:57:12 PM
im not saying what michael oher said. im saying the feeling it gave me from seeing it. of course he doesn't want to have his story told in the manner of the football version of Precious.

Saw it today. It was not bad. I enjoyed the story of it. The main characters were well developed and flawed and had there own charisma. The actors were young and upcoming actors who developed into their own that made the movie interesting. Of course, the air-fighting sequences were a lil outrageous and cgi at times (but that is where movie have been going the past 5 years). Enjoyed, was well worth the matinee price. No complaints from the small crowd that showed up for early matinee. III

The problem I have with the historic liberties is that it down plays the actual feats that really happened. For example, a few 332nd pilots actually did blow up a German destroyer which is depicted in the trailer of this movie, but all the fake hokey bullshit takes away from that and makes a true feat look like fiction. Also, turning all of the characters into cliches, instead of characters with real depth, is offensive to the actual men of the unit. The reason I have so much admiration for the Tuskegee Airmen is because they essentially beat the Army at its own game with a big FUCK YOU. The Army was told by congress to allow blacks to train as combat pilots, and the Army was opposed but relented because they had to. The Army then thought that they could kill the program by making the standards for entry so much higher than the regular white standards for pilot training. This resulted in such an epic "FUCK YOU, you racist assholes" that it deserves to be told and known. The Army thought that no black man could meet the high standards, and would thus kill the program, but instead it actually resulted in the training program to be composed of the absolute best, most educated, skilled and top quality candidates. Most of the men who entered the training were already civilian trained pilots, and extremely well educated and intelligent men. Therefore the overall level of quality of candidates was HIGHER than a lot of the whites who entered the Army flight training. Not to say the Army training didnt produce excellent white pilots, but the starting standards were higher for the black pilots because the Army thought no one could meet them. This fact alone means the men deserve a better film than a bunch of cliches to truly honor their story.

I took this part of the story of the Tuskegee Airment was more focused on the after-story of the training. Yes, there is more historical content that could have been put in, but this story took the history and made a quality story that could be respected. It was amazing that the movie The Tuskegee Airmen was actually made and played on HBO. In no means is this an EPIC movie or a Oscar Nominee, but it is a quality movie that educates.Personally I would with I would have watched the Tuskegee Airmen right before going to see this. III

The 1995 movie, while lower budget, told the story much more faithfully and with much more dignity and respect than George Lucas' infantile story telling ever can.

^I'm having a hard time understanding which side of the fence you are on regarding Red Tails. You liked it, no?
1/21/2012 1:00:56 AM
Movie was good. It's a lot of CGI and you can tell, but the story is amazing. I love WWII movies, so I thoroughly enjoyed it.I really don't give two shits about the physics of it. If that is such a big deal, you can stay at home and play Jane's Combat Simulator.

Saw it today, in part because I hadn't read the reviews, and in part because it was free.I enjoyed the aerial scenes. I don't know or particularly care about the maneuvering capabilities of the aircraft involved, which apparently is a big deal to some of you people. The action was well-shot and German people got blown up, so I had a good time. The ground scenes by and large were...awful isn't the right word. 100% derivative is more like it. Every scene seemed to be copy/pasted from:1) Other fighter pilot movies2) Other "black people overcoming adversity" moviesThe German bad guy with the scar is pathetic. The leader with a drinking problem who reaches for his bottle at the end of the movie, but winds up dumping it on the ground...the guy who falls in love with a local, gets engaged, and meets a predictable end...the bar fight...all of these gave me a palpable sense of deja vu. You've seen all of it a dozen times before. Hell, the only surprise was that they didn't bring the needlessly over-the-top racist Brian Cranston back at the end to admit he'd been wrong all along and shake hands with Terrence Howard.---Plus points:1) The constant references to "black Jesus" are pretty funny.2) Some of the banter is good, but I'm a sucker for WWII army-buddy repartee.3) Again, the dogfights were pretty. Some of the best-looking aerial combat I've seen, although apparently it lacked in realism.

I'm torn on if I'll see it in the theatre or not.Part of me wants to be offended to the level red baron 22 is, considering how I have met several Tuskegee Airmen, and how much time my family has spent involved in the current organizationand part of me just wants to let the "historical accuracy" problems slide and just see if it's a fun movie. Nobody wants to be serious all the time, you know? The "Tyler Perry's Pearl Harbor" comment made me bust out laughing, tho. GG.[Edited on January 22, 2012 at 7:54 PM. OMG this movie was sooooo good. Great action.Historically accurate. My friends and I were running around the Crossroads' parking lot after the movie with our arms spread out. Will be purchasing the blue ray.

I have far too much respect for the historical awesomeness of everything the Tuskegee Airmen achieved, and the barriers they not only broke but fucking demolished, to praise this movie.
1/23/2012 7:47:37 PM
I think you proved your point 4 posts ago. You are beating a dead horse at this point.
1/23/2012 7:50:17 PM
You guys are giving this red baron guy a migrane.
1/23/2012 7:58:44 PM
I am yet to hear anyone, white or black, military or not that have felt the movie was not good or well done. Most of the older vets that I know (some with knowledge of the Tuskegee Airmen) have all felt that the "MOVIE" was well told and a good story line that depicted alot of what was going on and how much of the history of that time was straight. But it is good to see intelligent banter on WWW. III
1/23/2012 8:14:21 PM
This movie treated the issues of the war, combat, death, and racism like a mild nuisance, like having to sit through a high school science class or something, as opposed to the actual weight of those real issues. The characters and story were nothing but bad "war" and "overcoming racism" cliches. Even if you forgive the cliches, the dialogue was SOOO bad, its unforgivable. The movie was far too juvenile, even to go so far as to have a villain character, the unnamed German ace fighter pilot, complete with snarl and scar. The villain was completely unnecessary, and he wasnt even a threat. I dont recall him actually shooting anyone down or posing a threat to them, and he was basically shot down twice. All he did was utter completely generic "bad guy" lines, which could have just as easily come from "Karate Kid"....like "show no mercy" or "they are rookies" (speaking of which he would have no way of knowing that based only on seeing an enemy squadron off in the distance). They even had the cliche of not killing the villain until the end...I mean seriously...like it was a video game boss battle. A movie like this does not need a villain character. Story telling 101 says that a story needs a conflict, but that conflict does not always need to come from a protagonist vs an antagonist. The conflict can also come from the protagonists overcoming adversity...which is what this story is about. The villain was racism, adversity and the luftwaffe, it did not need a scar faced villain. The love story was completely unnecessary and added nothing to the story. Seeing as how fascist Italy had invaded Africa, I wonder how open that society would be to an interracial marriage. Granted this took place after the "liberation", but still. The combat scenes, which I have beaten to death, were just stupid. they were over the top, cartoony, and just plain fake. There was no real drama or tension in the scenes because the German fighters were dispatched far too easily. They never posed a threat, so there was no tension or excitement. I think they showed 1 good guy being shot down the entire movie....not including the final guy during the head on game of chicken. Also, going head to head against an Me262 would be a bad idea seeing as how they were far more heavily armed than a P51. A 262 had four 30mm cannons in the nose. Also, not every hit to a B17 causes the engines to burst into flame and explode, as cool as that may look on screen. And how many times were planes just holding down the trigger non stop firing, like a video game with unlimited ammo. The average WWII fighter carried 30 seconds of ammo, they had to be conservative with their bursts, not just spraying and praying. All in all, this movie sucked terribly. I will go so far as to say it was WORSE than "Flyboys". At least "Flyboys" tried to have some weight with the issue of death in combat. They pointed out that the average WWI pilot had a 2-3 week life span, so they drank in the bar and partied after every mission and didnt waste time mourning each other because they knew they were all already dead. The Tuskegee Airmen are true heroes who deserved so much better than this, its really sad and disrespectful in my opinion to present this childish take on their story. If they want to make kids interested in history, tell them to read a fucking book, these men deserved to be honored by an adult take on their story. When I was a kid and wanted to learn about WWII, I read books. Hell when I was a kid and watched the 70s version of "Battle of the Buldge" with my grandfather, I was pointiing out to him that this was historically inaccurate.[Edited on January 23, 2012 at 9:34 PM. Maybe I am a history and airplane junkie, but watching real planes looks so much more beautiful than all the CGI Industrial Light and Magic can create. These machines, while deadly, are absolutely beautiful. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tq21MLP8gYIhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xITLBRkOd2khttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHrz8URnta4http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhQ1XmUjIUI&feature=relatedHell here is some European air show with a FW190 flying with a B17. Just the sound alone from the FW190s radial engine is beautiful. There are still plenty of restored, or semi restored (classic shell with modern parts avionics) to have used them in a film. No one is saying an entire fleet was needed, but the CGI could have been used to supplement real planes in the foreground.[Edited on January 24, 2012 at 1:00 AM. Reason : .]
