Shitty picture of my Chris Reeve Yarborough. Anyone got a good idea for a display case for this thing?
12/11/2011 6:34:29 PM
Do any local places have a good selection? Mostly looking for Cold Steel.
12/16/2011 12:49:08 PM
i picked up my knife at a gun shop. i live in richmond though. i did check gander mountain, dicks, and REI. none of them had a good selection.
12/16/2011 1:30:00 PM
the idea of displaying something useful instead of using it seems silly to meat least sports cards can't be used for much/judgment
12/16/2011 1:39:12 PM
^^ Davi's used to have a huge selection. Alas, they no longer exist.

Still looking for a fixed blade knife; but now thinking under $100 and maybe a 4-5 inch blade. Would like it to come w/ a MOLLE compatible sheath. Really like the Ontario Ranger RD-4 @ this point.
12/18/2011 12:16:28 PM
you should really stick it to 'em and use the knife...see if it lives up to being awesome or is more for pretty
12/19/2011 9:36:21 AM
The Ontario Ranger? It's really a good knife. You wouldn't break one in "normal" hard use, especially a 4" because of the lack of leverage. If you push it to the point that you're whacking it with a sledge hammer while it's clamped in a bench vice then you'll find its limits are quite a bit lower than something like a Busse Combat, Swamp Rat, or Scrap Yard. For sub $100 you won't find anything better except for some of the smaller Busse family knives.I'd surely take an Ontario Ranger over any other Ontario knife.

Got an Ontario SP15 for someone as a gift.I liked it so I got on for myself.

Thought I was sold on the RD-4, but now leaning to ESEE-3MIL (with the discount of course).
12/21/2011 11:07:49 PM
i'm pretty certain i've got a few Mora knives under a tree somewhere this xmas
12/21/2011 11:25:41 PM
I've been wanting a Mora just to see what they're like.I've owned some Opinels in the past and my favorite kitchen knives are cheap asian stamped steel, so I'd probably like them. At those prices they can take the roll of a box cutter/utility knife at the least.^^Did you decide yet?[Edited on December 22, 2011 at 8:56 PM. Reason : ]

WOOT! GF got me a Leatherman Skeletool CX for Christmas. Been looking for another EDC knife for a while, and this fits the bill and more. Very light and the knife is super sharp. Not much bigger than my normal Kershaw.http://www.leatherman.com/products/product.asp?id=3&f=6&c=1

for christmas I got the spyderco tenacious. G10 handle, liner lock, 8Cr13MoV blade (would rather have CPM S30V, oh well), definitely comparable to the paramilitary that I lost ( ) but much less expensive]

as predicted, i got a lot of knives for xmas. bunch of Moras and a Spyderco Pacific Salt.these should make cleaning fish and game a lot easier.also, i have an Endura 4 i've carried every day for quite a while that needs sharpening. suggestions on how to sharpen it? do any of those kits or special sharpening things work or is a whetstone and oil the way to go?[Edited on January 1, 2012 at 9:37 PM. ^^ that is the old style Flash BTW. My wife is a little intimidated by the spring assist and rightfully so, as it wouldn't be so bad-ass if it were not a little dangerous.I recently got a SOG Aegis, love it. In stock at Dick's too.[Edited on January 4, 2012 at 2:38 AM. Reason : lgksndf]

^ I am having a hard time finding 2.5"-3" pink pocket knives for around $50 with a decent blade material. That SOG is a really cool knife... I'm hoping to post my new pocket knife soon...

^^^^I used to have a Spyderco that looked just like that but with a black handle and loved it. I lost it at some point, though. I found it when tore the carpet out of my jeep. It was open and stashed under the carpet on the driver's side floorboard.

No problem. That wasn't too confusing was it?Basically, it's difficult to hold a certain angle. It's relatively easy to hold something horizontally or vertically. So, if you angle the stone then all you have to do is keep the knife horizontal. The rod holders work on the same principle, only vertically.Another big thing is you're not ready to move to a finer stone until the wire edge is gone from the coarser stone. You're really not ready to move to the other side of the knife until you've raised a wire edge with the side you're working on. However, I would limit the initial grinding to 10 strokes per side. If you don't you'll end up taking more material off of one side. Once you've gotten a wire edge on each side you can start lightening the pressure and reducing the number of strokes. You'll find this method will give you an edge that's pretty damn consistent and free of burrs. Often times after using my diamond stone I'll only need to start with 4 or 5 strokes per side on the ceramic and can go ahead and start reducing the number of strokes.People think I've sharpened my knives on machines. I tell them it's by hand and I can do it because of the 4 years I spent sharpening tools in the woodshop on campus plus all the years after that with my own knives. There's a lot of truth to that, but the real reason my edges turn out great is because I finally figured out the best way (at least for me) is to prop up the stone and take my angle holding ability out of the equation. Work on that method. You'll probably impress yourself. One last thing; I only use diamond and ceramic for a reason. They are durable and will not dish out over time like arkansas or aluminum oxides.Ohh yeah, one last last thing...I also use a piece of plywood about 4x8 inches. I epoxied a piece of glass to that wood and added some of those little stick on rubber feet to give it traction on a table. If you use enough epoxy that there's no uneven pressure on the glass it's almost certain the glass will be as close to flat as you'll find. If I have a big project like a dull axe or a machete then I'll use elmer's spray adhesive to stick wet/dry sandpaper to the glass. This is a cheap way to do coarse removal when you don't want to wear out the diamond stone on a tool that isn't that important. With the cheap elmer's spray adhesive you just have to get it wet and the paper will come right off so you can use a fresh piece or different grit.[Edited on January 5, 2012 at 7:53 PM. Reason : ]

Good gentlemen of the internets, I have this cheap DealExtreme knife that I dig, so i'm trying to find the legit version of it.It's branded as a Boker, but who knows if that's accurate. It's the bottom one in the picture:Anyone happen to know?
1/11/2012 2:36:58 PM
I'm not sure what you mean...Boker is a German company that has been making blades for over 100 years and their US company has been around for 25 years. Are you saying you think it's a rebranded version of a different knife?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B%C3%B6ker[Edited on January 11, 2012 at 4:09 PM. Reason : s]
