http://www.gamesradar.com/the-100-best-games-of-all-time/This is one of the most well written and up to date lists of greatest games I have read. However, it intentionally tries to troll the hell out of people like me who thought the greatest age in gaming thus far was when 3D gaming was getting started. They insult FF7 numerous times and leave it off the list entirely. They also leave off Ocarina of Time stating that the graphics are dated so Twilight Princess is better. trollolololOtherwise it is good. Except for GTA IV and Portal in the Top 5. Ok, maybe this list sucks ass.[Edited on November 22, 2011 at 11:20 AM. Reason : .]

I dunno I feel like a lot of these aren't just nostalgia-tinted views. It's the argument that many of the games from our pasts rival current games when you consider only gameplay/narrative. Super Mario World was such an enormous and varied game when you considered all the secrets/alternatives etc.

^Yea so many of these games were groundbreaking. Simcity was totally revolutionary at the time. Civilization being another. Quake was not revolutionary in the FPS genre, but it did allow jumping, more modding was possible, etc. Heroes of Might & Magic was an awesome turn based fantasy strategy game. X-COM was just holy shit great sci-fi turn based combat. Good luck even finding a fucking turn based strategy game now aside from the likes of Civ V. Again nothing wrong with Civ V, but it does not have any groundbreaking new play or story that makes me really wet my pants. Sure its more refined and prettier, but it does not bring anything so amazing that I have to keep playing it.Just wish that something could draw me in like that these days. BF3 and Skyrim are both games that I am genuinely interested in, but they are just updates to make it pretty. Nothing groundbreaking.

Skyrim is unique because of the amount of content that's all hand built and not just cloned like previous Elder Scrolls games.

^I don't know about Oblivion, but they said the exact same thing about Morrowind.
11/22/2011 2:31:32 PM
^they said in oblivion that content outside of cities was rendered by the computerI'm pretty much on the same boat that a lot of the "modern" games have been dumbed down with the exception of a few games. It sucks that single player games are going the way of the dodo, or atleast well scripted/dynamic story lines with an all to simple/easy game mechanics. I mean I loved the original half-life and have played the remastered source version a few times in the past years, it was fun because it was challenging and fun. Now its just mindless fun for most new shooters and they put the player in a movie script rather than an actual interactive puzzle like older games. There was lots of discovery and problem solving and that's why people loved portal (as do I). Now add a few combat scenarios, ditch the whole "regen health" crap and force players to find/conserve ammo than dropping health packs/ammo crates every 10 meters and more people would actually play more than 5 hours of SP as some articles would suggest. But I really think in this modern age, games should push for more expansive Co-op than just SP. It's hard to build a game that'll handle both and switch between the two effortlessly, but I do enjoy a good challenge/puzzle with a friend or two.

Metal Gear Solid 3 is really the best video game of all timeI'm Krallum and i approved this message.

^title says games, its a list.
11/22/2011 5:22:43 PM
That list just made me want to hook up my original xbox and beat Silent Hill 2 again.
11/22/2011 6:19:39 PM
^^^^^ I completely agree with a well written co-op experience and second the notion on regeneration health and ammo packs enough stock an army. I guess I agree that if you're shooting in a war game your enemies will obviously drop ammo so in order to do that I think we need to go back to something non-human.I would love to play something half-lifeish built around co-op where some puzzles requires something like both players helping each other with the gravity gun to get to certain areas as well as monster AI that required co-op strategy such as one player distracting the mob so the other would be able to hit the weak spot(s) etc. To me it just sounds uber fun to me.

There are a lot of weird statistics around video games now. Iirc, the average gamer age is something like 37, and a huge majority of players don't make it to the end of a game. I don't think the ultra hard, procedural NES games (die, get 5 feet further, die, get 5 feet further, etc.) will really fly as much as they used to.A LOT of games just suck past the halfway point. That's been true in the past though. I really hate games with poor storylines. Starcraft II's storyline was so underwhelming, and dialog was practically 100% cliche movie phrases. Ugh.
11/23/2011 11:35:31 AM
Honestly, I could see this thread being much more successful if we try to split more into game types. So instead of just "video games" maybe things like platformers, FPS, Sports (blargh, I hate even mentioning these in this type of thread), Adventure, etc. Right now, its just a giant mess of favorite games. If you are looking for a great platformer, I would say these are awesome and will always be good even compared to new offerings:Super Mario 3, Super Mario World, Super Metroid, Symphony of the Night, Viewtiful Joe 2In terms of FPS games, I'll just put two of my favorites:Metroid Prime 3 (an amazingly pure Single Player Experience)UT2003 (an amazingly pure multiplayer experience).RPGs: Pretty much anything from the SNES days made by SquareSoft (Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore, etc).[Edited on November 23, 2011 at 12:29 PM. I've long since stopped enjoying Japanese style RPG games, I probably wouldn't care for the Final Fantasy games if they were released today.Every RPG fan should play Fallout 1 and Planescape: Torment. Both of them are brilliant games with fantastic stories. If you like Fallout 1 then play Fallout 2, it's more of the same but it's MUCH MORE, it's so much larger than Fallout 1 and is still my favorite game, but the story isn't quite as strong. If you like Planescape Torment then play Baldurs Gate 1 and 2.

i wasted so much of my childhood playing warcraft 2 and the original age of empires, it's depressing.
11/26/2011 12:04:34 PM
most games with sequels shouldnt count, especially if they are superior to the originalfzero gc was better than fzerothe civ sequels were far superior in so many ways over the originalmario kart 64 is the best versionthese shoulnt be lists of classic games, but rather games that are TIMELESS, meaning you can play them and still have fungoldeneye is good example of this, great game in the day but the tech was so primitive it can hardly be played today. some games just dont age well
11/27/2011 11:24:15 AM
I think they should count if they themselves offered some revolution in addition to what the previous title accomplished.Super Mario 3/World/64 are all revolutionary games.
11/27/2011 11:32:20 AM
yes, everything I listed would fall in the TIMELESS category for meI could play any/all of what I listed and still have funADDITIONALLY, most of them fall into the revolutionary/change-the-landscape/genre-defining category. Not all, some sequels just took the bar and raised it to a new level of existence.

halflife 1/2 - absolutelymetal gear solid 1-4 - only the first three. the fourth one in my opinion subverted the mechanics of the series by making it play like a third person shooter. it wasn't a bad game but certainly didn't feel like metal gear to me. i thought the plot was explained decently but the ratio between gameplay and cutscenes did not exactly sit well with me either. i'm also not quite sure how the recently announced metal gear solid 5 will fit in the storyline after everything was so tightly wrapped up at the end of the last game.counter strike <= 1.5 - definitelyzelda ocarina of time - definitely, although I don't think this one has aged quite as well as the internet would have you believe. I would add Majora's Mask to this list and, although it's too soon to call it, I think Skyward Sword will stand the test of time.goldeneye - definitelybioshock 1 - definitelydeus ex 1 - never playedresident evil 1/2 - I tried sooooo hard to like these games but I just couldn't get past the controls and camera angles. I admire their legacy but as far as true timeless games are concerned I would definitely replace these two with Resident Evil 4.world of warcraft vanilla->wotlk (game died at ulduar) - I don't know if I can call a game timeless if it perpetually gets expansion packs every so often. I've also never played this one so I can't call it either.shenmue - never playedut99/ut2k4 - never playedgizmos and gadgets - never heard of itrainbow 6 original and rogue squadron - never playedtecmo super bowl - fuck yesstarfox - only the N64 versionhonorable mention to:bayonetta - never playedstreets of rage 1-3 - only part 2, and I would put that game in the "timeless" category. the first one is okay but didn't really stand apart from the other games in the genre. part 3 is a piece of shit in my opinion.sonic adventure 1 and 2 - never played but I would add sonic 3 and knuckles to the "timeless" categoryI would like to nominate the following as being "timeless" games:Riven - I just played this game back in January and I was blown away by it. Granted, it may have a higher barrier to entry for a lot of people, but for the people with the patience to play it it's a game all it's own. I would like to add that, should anybody actually play it, stay as far away from a FAQ as you can. The one thing I hate about this game is that it has virtually no replay value once you've beaten it and figured everything out. But the journey from A to B is fantastic.Super MetroidMetroid PrimeOkamiMega Man XContraGTA: San AndreasChrono TriggerFinal Fantasy 6Eternal Darkness

star control 2 is a good example of timeless i thinkthe freeware updates are very well done and its as good as playing on the 3DO(which i have still )story, gameplay, and graphics all hold up, i wish i could find another game with alien races done better than this game
