Penn St just cancelled the press conference, this is just getting worse and worse for them.

its probably a good thing for them to cancel the press conference, there is no way the reporters would only ask questions about the game this week. Plus JoePa would inevitably slip up and say something dumb after getting peppered with questions regarding his morality, etc.

there are more important issues here than cleaning out the football program.
11/8/2011 12:07:09 PM
Of course there are, but the alumni aren't really going to be involved in the legal process. The only way they can outlet their anger over a scandal like this is demanding firings. And if they're anywhere near as vocal in their opinions as our lunatic fringe then the process has already started.Hell, just saving the university's reputation requires cleaning out that department. At least imo.

"He was doing what? To whom? I didn't see anything..."
11/8/2011 12:13:12 PM
timswar, as a native Pennsylvanian, let me tell you that will never happen. Joe Paterno may as well be named Jesus Christ to Penn State fans/alumni.
11/8/2011 12:17:37 PM
This isn't the first event that I've become aware of recently that calls into question the culture within the rank and file at Penn State. They've been accepting money (to the tune of $88 million) to conduct research with a predetermined pro-fracking outcome.good listen:http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/440/game-changerI'm pretty much convinced that the institution is morally bankrupt.

NYtimes reporting that Paterno will not be back next yearhttp://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/09/sports/ncaafootball/penn-state-said-to-be-planning-paternos-exit.html?_r=1

He shouldnt coach this week
11/8/2011 12:38:03 PM
11/8/2011 12:38:24 PM
There is no doubt in my mind that he will retire after this, but if you could see my Facebook feed right now you would understand that Penn State alumni really don't want to see it happen.

11/8/2011 1:05:31 PM
ESPN Radio is reporting that something is in the works to have Joe Paterno stepping down by the end of the week.
11/8/2011 1:07:05 PM
my question is...did they wait until the record was broken to move forward with this on purpose?
11/8/2011 1:09:29 PM
Fire them all. Seriously, this pisses me off to no end. Poor kids.
11/8/2011 1:09:53 PM
saw something on twitter earlier that Penn State officials are planning his departure.
11/8/2011 1:10:56 PM
^ yuphe's done.i'm torn though. because i have no doubt that he thought he did the right thing. he said that the Grad Assistant said he saw something inappropriate. joe pa told his chain of command. they interviewed the Grad assistant and sandusky stayed on the job. i wonder if he thought, okay well they must've investigated and found no wrong doing :-/granted, if that was my kid, i'd want his head on a platter.i'm wicked pissed at some people saying that these are just some bad kids looking for their 15 minutes of fame
11/8/2011 1:12:51 PM
^ get the FUCK out of here.you tell someone higher up that a guy was blowing a 10 year old boy and nothing happens, and you think "oh well, i did my part... guess i'll keep him on staff as well"?
11/8/2011 1:17:56 PM
do we know that the grad assistant's account of what he saw is that extreme? I'm asking because I really don't know. In everything i've read i've seen varying degrees of abuse, inappropriate contact, sexual situations, to giving a minor fellatio.not that it changes anything but if Joe Paterno is told something vague it may not have alarmed him as much as it probably should have at the time]
11/8/2011 1:20:52 PM
^^ from what paterno said, the graduate assistant account was not that detailed.if that's what he told them then yes obviously it's wrong. if the graduate assistant was like "i think i saw something wrong but i'm not sure" kind of thing then i stand by what i said.
11/8/2011 1:23:08 PM
Full details of the victims and incidents in question. WARNING very disturbinghttp://www.attorneygeneral.gov/uploadedFiles/Press/Sandusky-Grand-Jury-Presentment.pdf

11/8/2011 1:27:52 PM
yeah no one has any idea what the grad assistant said at the time, i have a hard time believing that a grad student who is afraid to call the cops about a sexual assault would just walk into joe paterno's office and start talking explicitly about blowjobs
11/8/2011 1:29:59 PM
the 98 case i think the defense accused the janitor that witnessed it as having dementia or something so they were able to get the charges dismissed.not long after that case the DA went missing. they've found his laptop washed up on the banks of a river and are now saying that he's dead.
11/8/2011 1:30:47 PM
So as far as NCAA goes...can Joe Pa get in trouble for a coach receiving extra benefits???

I think if I had a ticket I wouldn't even want to go to the game Saturday (it's home vs. Nebraska). How can you get up on school pride with all this sh*t going on in the background?Horrible way for Paterno to go out, but if he looked the other way or took the path of least resistance ("I did my part, I told my boss and never worried about it again"), it's hard to feel sorry for him.
11/8/2011 3:05:55 PM
agreed to extent... but to "get up" for a game you have to make it all about supporting the players and i guess the university as a whole (minus said certain employees)

11/8/2011 3:24:49 PM
^^^ From reading the grand jury document, it seems to me Paterno took the issue seriously and didn't just pass the buck. He put the graduate assistent in direct contact with Curley and Schultz. Campus police report to Schultz and Schultz had knowledge of Sandusky's past (it's not clear that Paterno knew anything). Curley and Schultz also provided closure to the graduate assistant about actions they had "taken" to resolve the issue.I agree Paterno's retirement is best, but I think most of the blame being cast his way comes only with the benefit of hindsight.I do not understand how Spanier is not being charged with the same failure to report as Curley and Schultz.

They were were worried about job security. Graduate assistants and janitors are a dime a dozen. Not an excuse, but a reason.
11/8/2011 3:38:30 PM

^^^^ I agree the graduate assistant should have called 911. So should have the janitor.Paterno called Curley and Schultz. Schultz heads the campus police, and both Curley and Schultz lied to everyone.]
