I would tend to think the opposite would be true, minus jobs such as physicians. I know my employer is extremely accommodating for jury duty, and most large reputable companies operate the same way. I'd imagine it's the smaller mom and pop shops that would be dicks about employees on jury duty.

in fact when I was selected, that seemed to be the common thread as we got into day 2 (never actually saw the court room or even got to the point in jury selection, they just made us be on standby for 2 days).

i'd definitely like to sit in on a trial and actually participate though.

No, from the attorney perspective, he's right. We want intelligent people (from the defense perspective). But then you've got business meetings, and business trips, or they run their own company. It's not that the job won't let them have the time off, it's often that it's unpaid time off or they can't afford (for the sake of their work itself) to take the time off. The last trial I did, all but 1 fit the bill of retirees, stay at home mom's, and government employees, and that certainly was not by choice.

Obviously, this is hugely different for a long trial, vs a trial that's just a couple of days. Shorter trials you tend to get more educated people, since there is not a lot of overlap with work schedules.

Because my driver's license still says I live in Cumberland county, I got summoned last week. All it took was a quick email to the court saying I dont live there anymore and I'm free to go!

I'd just like to say thanks to those of you who have served on a jury or even just appeared without complaint.

K

Listen to me people

When you get a summons for jury duty, DON'T POST ABOUT IT ON THE INTERNET.

Trust me, I've done the research on this one in my own lab.

begonias was my lab assistant, she can corroborate my findings.

I was supposed to show up for jury duty yesterday but forgot all about. Any advice on how to proceed? Should I call them in the morning or just say fuck it?

call

you'll probably be told to appear soon

but if you just blow them off then you'll probably get a bench warrant

^^ same thing happened to me last year. I called and explained the situation, and they told me that the entire jury pool for that day was released anyway so it was all good. Worst case scenario, they'll put you on the calendar for a later case. But most importantly, CALL TODAY. If they did select a jury and you weren't there, they'll issue a bench warrant.

I've been lucky to be called in Jackson County... right after I moved away from there.

Then I got lucky enough to get called in Nash County... right after I moved to Greenville.

God knows if I get called here what kind of case it would be.

Just got a summons for superior court jury duty in June. I am somewhat interested as I have never gotten one before and since I'm in Orange County, I might get to sit for Julius Nyang'oro's trial. I would probably be excused from that one simply because I went to NC State or because I work at UNC.

But I have a work trip scheduled for the following week to Vegas for a class, conference and exam. Flights, rooms, etc. are already booked and the conference is that week only. Even taking my wife, which is definitely on my dime. So I guess I just request a deferral to a later date?

Long story. But yes, even that can be a big deal, and I would strongly suggest not ever saying anything about Jury Duty on any public forum, electronic or otherwise.

^As I said, I am somewhat interested in doing it. Civic duty and all that stuff. But damned if they didn't pick a shitty time. Guess I'll see about getting it deferred.

Just hope you get called for something interesting and don't have to waste a week on a land spat with the state.

I've lived in Guilford County for 10 years now and I've only been called for jury duty once. My mom gets called at least once a year. I guess a lot of lawyers are looking for middle-aged white women in their jury selections.

I thought Jury Duty was funny, until Showtime started showing it about 3 times a day everyday for over a year! At least we weren't paying for it. The bus driver backed over the cable box and my dad took out the filter that blocked Showtime.

That is all I wanted to say.

Don't blame me, I didn't convict him. Blame his defense lawyers, they're the ones that threw me under the bus to the judge.

I think they're just trying to get more money out of him. If he gets acquitted, they don't get to make more money on appeals.
