I can't believe the insane mindgames or whatever the hell you want to call it some of you guys are proposing with the whole check thing. If the check comes, offer to pay it, and whatever the dad says in response to that just do. Don't "insist," don't try to sneak something with the waiter beforehand... what the hell kind of immature one-upsmanship is that for a first meeting?

This comes from nothing more than different interpretations of "insist".

for real though, if i was out with a gf's parents, i offered to pay, and they let me, I'd be so surprised I wouldn't even care.

Who is this idiot?? Have fun knowing your future father-in-law thinks you're a douchebag.

Will just echo that you should be prepared to pay, offer to pay, possibly do a half-hearted 2nd attempt to pay if he declines your first attempt (depending on how insistent he is)....then just let him pay.

I don't think I've ever been able to pay for a dinner when going out with a significant other's parents...and I've tried hard.

I'm guessing you haven't done the whole first time meeting the parents eating dinner with them thing too often. I can't imagine your tactic would go over well with the average father. Hell, my father is as socially liberal as it gets and even he would be a bit wtf if my boyfriend did that.

This is as easy as a pop-up in baseball.

The person who calls it first should get it.

If someone says "I got it", you're not going to trip him and snatch the ball out of his hand. You're a douchebag. Even if you're the senior.

If nobody claims it, and you let the ball hit the ground, you're all shitty players.

If you both call it at the same time, you always bow to the senior player.

I'm not sure if I was unclear, misunderstood the OP, or you guys just suck, but I'm not getting why my statement was so controversial. Other people in the thread have said similar things and didn't get nearly the same response.

The parents are coming to visit. If the OP had invited the parents to dinner, then I would say he should absolutely offer to pay. That doesn't seem to be the case here. It wasn't Pikey's idea to meet the parents, because he's (at least according to his online persona) a spineless wimp and would have shit his pants before extending that invitation.

Offering to pay for the whole family sends a distinctly different message than offering to pay for yourself and your girlfriend. The goal in this meeting is not to demonstrate your ability or willingness to provide for the entire family, but rather for their daughter specifically. I fail to see how this is a douchebag move, though I'd love to be enlightened.

A much better way to offend the parents is to insist on paying and all this other bullshit being suggested. "Mind games," as someone else described it. Depending on the parents, offering to pay could be insulting.

But I feel it is an all or nothing circumstance here. The halfsies idea sounds like bullshit.

Why do you think it's bullshit? Because someone else in the thread said it was? Do you have any actual reason at all for believing that?

Pikey, you are still playing tee ball if you have to ask questions like these.
It will be painfully obvious to her parents that you lack social skills and any skills with women at all, so it really wont matter what you do.

If they have already met you as "a friend of their daughter," they are going to know you are a chump without the balls to ask her out in the first place. Her dad already thinks you are a pussy, i can guarantee that.

You need to go to a place where you know the menu somewhat so you can recommend something good for them. Be prepared to buy a bottle of wine and some apps too. I also hope that you can interact with a waiter/waitress like you have been out to eat before, because this will also show that you have/do not have social skills. Be prepared to pay for everything, let him pay if he offers. That is the easiest part of the whole thing.

and yes, you are indeed fucked.

^^ seriously. Pro-Tip for trolls, using niggardly allows for maximum trolling effectiveness while maintaining mildly plausible deniability.

Niggardly, as you must have noted by now, is spelled with an "a".

niggardly would have been if you ordered nothing and begged for food off the father's plate "because it looks just so damn good" and when he says "No", you grab some fries or chicken wings off his plate anyway.

A very in-depth pranking, indeed.
