they musta had a nice location since ruth's chris took it over. I definitely think chain restaurants are a downer though. that whole new north hills expanded a little too fast just before the economic slump. i stayed in that renaissance for like 60 bucks a night or something a few months after it opened and the place was a ghost town.

Totally miss the Hard Wok Buffet on Glenwood. and I'll miss Jack Astors. They were my Sunday stop during football season - they had FANTASTIC wings.
8/11/2011 11:18:07 AM
Ohhhhhhhhhhh man I had forgotten about Hard Wok Buffet. My friends and I used to eat there all the time for lunch during high school
8/11/2011 11:20:32 AM
ugh, i hated that place. good riddance LOL Your Place up there used to be the shit
8/11/2011 11:21:15 AM
I went to Hard Wok Buffet back in like 2005ish and it had an 85 health rating...Not long after that, it closedI remember a restaurant that specialized in soups was there before it was Hard Wok Buffet. I loved the soup place
8/11/2011 11:23:24 AM
haha yeah it was not great food by any stretch, but it was pretty decent when it first opened in the 90s.

Is that the restaurant that was inside the Belk's in Crabtree on the 2nd floor?
8/11/2011 11:39:50 AM
Yep. There was also one at the old Belks downtown, which closed in the late 90s sometime.
8/11/2011 11:40:43 AM
^^^ There's still the downtown one. Only reason I know that is it kept coming up during my wedding venue search.[Edited on August 11, 2011 at 11:41 AM. Reason : a]

Is that Korean place still open on Hillsborough St? Its upstairs where the old Jamaician place used to be...I think its called Waba and they had Korean TV on all the time. It was awesome
8/11/2011 11:45:04 AM
It's still there but it's crap now. I went there for lunch a couple months ago and was really disappointed. Maybe it's because I have more experience with Korean food now.

^ The Capital Room cafeteria moved to the Ramada on Blue Ridge. The place that's referenced by the address in your link was a lovable dive bar that had nothing to do with the cafeteria, and also closed at least two years ago. It's Isaac Hunter's on the Fayetteville side now, and the Salisbury side has been turned into a potential retail space.
8/11/2011 12:54:41 PM
I used to enjoy Milano's on Hillsborough St. Pretty cheap lunch buffet.
8/11/2011 12:58:46 PM
+1 on Greenshields and Hard Times. Both of them were really good. And it's sad that nothing has opened in the "anchor" location of City Market in the six? seven? years since Greenshields closed. Also, while I was never that impressed with Hard Wok (I ate there frequently because it was cheap and not bad, but it wasn't great either) I do miss Royal China up at Millbrook and Atlantic.

I remember the first time I went to Lucky 32 it was a date for homecoming or something. The guy I was with had never seen green beans that hadn't come out of a can before that meal
8/11/2011 1:59:27 PM
Oh? What's in the old main building then (I haven't been there in probably over a year)And, just FYI (not to anyone in particular), the Greensboro Lucky 32 is the original one and has been open for 20+ years.[Edited on August 11, 2011 at 3:46 PM. Reason : d]
8/11/2011 3:44:50 PM
i never went to greenshields when it was open... wish I had. How about Southend Brewery (where natty greene's is now)... I used to like going there on occasion.
8/11/2011 3:45:30 PM
Greenshields was a great place to drink underage. The pub burger was awesome as well.
8/11/2011 3:46:36 PM
I miss Hard Times on Glenwood. Also Mr. Dunderbak's in Crabtree. It was nice to be able to grab a decent sandwich and a beer at the mall.Blue Moon that used to be on Hillsborough St. had some pretty good stuff too the couple of times I ate there.
8/11/2011 4:23:38 PM
^^^^ Pretty sure it's an event rental space now.
8/11/2011 4:25:40 PM
Aha, Mr. Dunderbak's! I miss that place too. The one in Greensboro at Four Seasons held on for several years longer than the Crabtree location, but it, too, closed a couple of years ago.And how could I forget Blue Moon--while it wasn't eastern NC barbecue (and that may have sealed its fate) it was pretty tasty nonetheless. Big sandwiches too, and excellent cornbread.[Edited on August 11, 2011 at 4:35 PM. Reason : m-o-o-n that spells pork]
8/11/2011 4:33:58 PM
I have fond memories of Dunderbak's.

I have been to the futureBeasley's Chicken and Honey
8/11/2011 4:54:29 PM
is ledo still in the holliday inn? Gotta be the least talked about pizza place of all time. and i LIKE it ALOT.
8/11/2011 5:28:15 PM
^^was it good?
8/11/2011 5:29:30 PM
I never really remember Hard Times being that great. But it's about a million times better than The Diner, so in that sense, I miss it.
8/11/2011 7:21:27 PM
Mi Tierra!!!Used to be over off Atlantic. It was Venezuelan sort of. And Mexican/Colombian/whatnot. (I specify cause nobody ever knows what I'm talking about. Some day, somebody will reveal they ate there, too!)[Edited on August 11, 2011 at 8:14 PM. Reason : And hell yeah, Mr. Dunderbak's!][Edited on August 11, 2011 at 8:16 PM. It's kind of surprising there isn't a Hawaiian restaurant around here.
8/11/2011 10:47:06 PM
Wow, Hard Times is closed? There's like 5000 of them in the DC area. Love that Texas chili.Anyone ever see that sign by the door to the left of...Reverie I think that has the sign over it reading "Cloud And Fire Express", or "CAFE"? What was that? I always wondered.
8/12/2011 10:00:24 AM
I used to like to go to the one in Stonecrest in Charlotte in highschool... but that is because they would serve booze to anyone who flashed them a PHS ID (which I didn't have, but I was with people who did)the one thing I remember is that their vegetarian chili was actually their best tasting chili
