I don't think anyone is arguing that the drug works. Or even that ppl should take it. It's effects are clear and proven. My argument is that the diagnosis of ADD and ADHD as a disease that needs medical treatment is bullshit. You want to do better in school? Take adderall. You want to be more productive and home and work? Take adderall. But don't use the diagnosis of something that 100% of the world can fake as a crutch to lean on to make yourself feel better about not being as smart as you think you should be.Just because you can't focus or get bad grades doesn't mean you have a disorder that needs medical treatment. Some people just are as intelligent as others. Otherwise we would have a planet full of Davincis and Einsteins.

^ADHD is a learned behavior that is very hard to break. It is linked to anxiety for me, not sure about others. Trying to concentrate on something that doesn't interest me makes me extremely uncomfortable and anxious. It's not laziness, it induces a very unsettling feeling all over my body. Medication makes that feeling go away. I don't take it currently because I'm uneasy about side effects. You can curb ADHD without medication, but it is very, very hard.

Your anxiety is a personality flaw. ADHD is the crutch that has been given to you by the medical field so you don't have to feel so bad about it.

As someone else mentioned, humans haven't really evolved to focus on sedentary tasks for hours and hours at a time. Some people are better at it than others, but I wouldn't consider inability to focus a true flaw.Stimulants are useful, and I think anyone should be able to use them. The wisdom of using them has to be determined on an individual level. I do think it's unfair that some students are "allowed" to use stimulants while others aren't. The fact is, people that haven't been diagnosed with ADD still find ways to use those drugs to their advantage. In any case, I don't think stimulants are great for your heart, and I say that as I drink my 5th caffeinated drink since 10 AM. I took my fair share of stimulants in college to get an edge, and it works great, but I'm not a big fan of the way they make me feel afterwards, and generally I think people should avoid using them if they can.

Hey doc... I never feel like doing my homework, studying, or paying attention in class. I must be sick, right? Gimme some drugs for that. You get by without it the same way you'd get by if you didn't take a vitamin everyday.I've already said I've seen the benefits of using this drug. All americans should be able to take whatever drugs they want. Why should these benefits only be given to those who don't want to try harder? Everyone should be able to take drugs like this if they so chose.

^You're switching your argument to "well why can't everyone take those drugs". I agree, they should be able to. You're better off if you can cope without them, though.Like I said before, when I did take drugs, it helped me realize what it's like to be able to pay attention to things without extreme anxiety. I can't recommend that anyone use them long-term, however.[Edited on July 19, 2011 at 4:17 PM. Reason : .]

My point is the same I've made above:

It is kinda funny how everybody is supposedly using stimulants to do better in school, but the vast majority of work that gets done is still total crap.Instead of using drugs to study, lots of people try to use them to pull off miraculous all-nighters...and the results are often hilarious.

Diagnosed severe ADHD combined type here, before I started Adderall I was (apparently) self-medicating via caffeine. Used to drink a metric shitton of soda in a day to calm me down and help me focus, haven't felt that same urge since starting Adderall and my caffeine consumption has gone way down. The only real problem I have had with it is I also have OCD, and sometimes it exacerbates it.

I never took stimulants to study, but I would always get jacked up before walking into an exam so that I could burn through them.
