I read an interesting theory on AFFC, about the part where Brienne stays with the begging brothers. Apparently The large guy in the background may be the Hound?? The begging brother says that the Hound is dead, but I think that what he meant is that all his bitterness is dead.

^^ yeah I didn't really pay that much attention to that section the first time around but after hearing that and re-reading the section I think their points were valid.

^enjoy!

Makes sense, as he's a pretty cool character. On the other hand, it starts to count against his suddenly murder cool people thing. A big character needs to die suddenly in a really mundane way.

Repost from the TV show thread by request.

New concept art for later on in the series. If you haven't read the first book don't click the link.

finished book 4 last night and felt like nothing really happened. there was some interesting backstory, but I thought it was pretty weak compared to the previous 3. i don't think i would've been too happy if i had waited 5 years between ASOS and AFFC followed by another 6 years before ADWD.

butttttt, because i didn't have to wait 5+ years between books i feel pretty good about AFFC. i'm super excited about ADWD, especially the happenings on the wall and some of the characters that are getting their own chapters for the first time.

I have about 1/5 of book 3 to go. I should have 4 read before 5 comes out.

^^^ I thought while not as much happened as the other three there was some significant story development. Sansa, Arya, Sam, the characters in the desert, Cersei all had a good amount happen to them.

But yeah - I can't imagine waiting 5 years for ADWD after that. At this point I want to see Jon, Daeny, Sansa and Aryas stories. Unfortunately no Sansa in the next book

I read these books right after AFFC came out, so I didn't have to wait 5 years for that book, but I have had to wait 6 years for ADWD

How easy reading are these books? I was really close to picking the first volume up last night at the book store but i held off thinking I may be able to find a copy at a goodwill for less.

But i don't have too much free time to read (read: gf) so i'm wondering if i'll be able to make it through if i can only knock a chapter or two out at a time.

You would be fine. Each chapter is told from the perspective of a character and it alternates between maybe 10-12 characters per book.

he didn't outright name him king of the north, rather, he legitimized him making him officially a stark and his heir in the event anything happened to him.

he also freed him of his obligation to the wall even though he really didn't have the power to do that.

couldn't be in book 4 as The Red Wedding had already taken place and Catelyn was already dead at the start of AFFC IIRC, so it was probably Book 3

is this one of those things that's just speculation at this point or did I miss something obvious while reading? anyway, i didn't think people could be released from the wall so making him not a bastard wouldn't matter anyway.

^^^, ^^ here are the relevant quotes

Quote :
"“Mother.” There was a sharpness in Robb’s tone. “You forget. My father had four sons.”
She had not forgotten; she had not wanted to look at it, yet there it was. “A Snow is not a Stark.”
“Jon’s more a Stark than some lordlings from the Vale who have never so much as set eyes on Winterfell.” Jon is a brother of the Night's watch, sworn to take no wife and hold no lands. Those who take the black serve for life".
"So do the knights of the kingsguard. That did not stop the Lannisters from stripping the white cloaks from Ser Barristen Selmy and Ser Boros Blount when they had no more use for them. If I send the watch a hundred men in Jon's place, I'll wager they find some way to release him from his vows" He is set on this. Catelyn knew how stubborn her son could be. “A bastard cannot inherit.”
“Not unless he’s legitimized by a royal decree,” said Robb. “There is more precedent for that than for releasing a Sworn Brother from his oath.” Jon is the only brother that remains to me. Should I die without issue, I want him to succeed me as King in the North. I had hoped you would support my choice.”"

So what are you alls thoughts on season 4/5? I dont think they can split them like the books are, I think it will really mess up the tv audience to take away major characters for a full season.

Also in regards to last nights episose, i can only imagine what tv audiences were going through. That was the first major death, i didnt believe it was true as Arya didnt actually see it. That was before I realized GRRM loves killing people. I can only imagine the tv reaction to the red wedding.

If the show's still on when they get to A Feast For Crows, there's no way HBO will structure things the way GRRM did. It's bad enough in a book, but can you imagine if they just stopped following everybody's favorite characters for an entire year? I think they'll combine books 4 and 5 into a two or three season arc.

they could probably do without all the Dornish POV's. Just have Cersei's daughter being taken away to some far away land and be done with it. I never liked reading those POV's anyway.

The Dornish could play a bigger part in the coming books, so it might not be possible to leave them out. Besides, I sort of liked the Sand Snakes.

Katee Sackhoff would be a perfect Asha Greyjoy. Dye her hair black and give her the same attitude she had in Battlestar Galactica.

I'm excited to see what they do with the Greyjoys as well, however they really need to focus more on the Direwolves or future seasons are going to be all WTF'd up. GRRM better flex his producer muscles to make that happen.

^^ I would totally love Starbuck as Asha.

And Asha is probably going to play a big role in the upcoming books so it might be a good fit.

I'm really excited to see where the Iron Islands and Dornish end up in terms of allegiance. I have a feeling the current Greyjoy army led by Euron will be Dany's initial ally (And help bring her and her army across the sea), before they betray her with the horn.

Honestly though - would it surprise anyone at all to see the horn actually be successful? GRRM is such a troll, I could see him having the horn actually work, Dany loses her dragons and then getting killed off? Would be so fucked up but when do things actually work out in these books.

yea as far as the Dornish activity goes, I have a feeling it will become more important over the next couple books, making it hard to cut their stuff out in upcoming seasons.

oh man if thats true i might have to be amish for the next two weeks

I started reading when Storm of Swords came out, and I had to wait over 4 years to get A Feast For Crows. which was underwhelming to say the least. And now for this.

I have been waiting 11 years for more Tyrion fucking Lannister.

Christopher Eccleston seems to be the huge and some what credible rumor for Stannis. This guy has played no nonsense characters before, and I seem to remember him doing a lot of yelling. Should work out nicely.

Also, I saw someone mention Bonnie Wright as Ygritte. Pretty perfect cast really. I wonder what the chances actually are.

It did get out. There are people on the Game of Thrones subreddit that have been victim to spoilers. Beware the internet. Nowhere is safe. Considering the huge success of the show, I could see this being worse that "Snape Killed Dumbledore".
