our reactor can power a a cup of coffee...
4/2/2012 12:05:42 PM
^I love that line. Our reactor can power precisely nothing, as it is not set up to deliver usable power...it's a research reactor. But, assuming you could somehow draw power from it, and at full power with a typical net efficiency of ~35%, it'd output around 350kWe. Your average coffee pot is around 200W, so it's probably more accurate to say that the PULSTAR could "power" all the homes in your neighborhood with a safe overhead for summer and winter peak usages.]

I can confirm that a news alert for 3:30 today has been predicted.
5/22/2012 1:41:33 PM
Other than a weather alert, which has been up for a while, I see no breaking news.

Time for the yearly review of how to survive a hurricane! Thanks, news channels, because I always forget how to dodge a storm that's hundreds of miles away and has updated forecasts every thirty minutes. Also, 4-8 storms. Nice precision there!
5/24/2012 11:39:15 AM
Another low quiet hurricane season on the horizon, good stuff. For the record we're going on 2400 days without a category 3 or higher hurricane making landfall in the US. That is a historical streak. http://wattsupwiththat.files.wordpress.com/2012/05/daysbtlandfalls612.jpg

^1 June 2012?Fuck, did I fall into a time machine again?
5/24/2012 11:47:10 AM
Given that there are no active storms in the Atlantic currently, and that June 1st is the official start of hurricane season I think we can agree that statement will stand.Unless you would like to make a monetary wager over it?
5/24/2012 11:50:21 AM
haha, no thanks

I just think it's bad practice/taste to extrapolate data when that's not the goal of your analysis. The goal is to show past trends (according to your link alone; maybe there's an article that goes with it that extends the analysis into the future, but I don't know that). Why do I have an opinion on this? BECAUSE IT MATTERS, DAMMIT. [Edited on May 24, 2012 at 11:55 AM. Reason : .]
5/24/2012 11:54:45 AM
I think that chart was intended to show how relatively quiet the Atlantic basin has been of late. And given that the statement that a "cat 3 or higher storm won't hit the US by June 1st" has a 99.999% chance of being correct it seems like a fair statement to make (in the article clarification was given).
