God damn it why is it not November now? I can't remember the last time I anticipated getting a game this much. It was probably Daggerfall.

Got a i5 2500K and some RAM for my b-day yesterday. I was wavering on upgrading my GTS 250 but this thread has convinced me to just go ahead and do it.

my PC upgrade cycles are in sync with Moore's law, so I'll be looking to upgrade this holiday season.

I've been eyeing this game for a bit, as its obviously been in the news. However, I've never played an elder scrolls game before, but it does seem interesting. It's rpg-ish, right? And should I look into some of the previous games first, or should I just go ahead and pounce on this? Any games that compare to elder scrolls that anyone knows of to give me a feel of the style? Sorry if I'm asking dumb questions, but I've been hearing good things about this and I'm curious/wanted to get some first-hand advice on this series.
8/19/2011 10:24:16 PM
^It is an action RPG, and you can do whatever you want, follow the main quest, or just ignore it and go around and do anything you want. If you want to get a feel of the style just go pick up Oblivion, i'm sure you can get it for quite cheap and it is a great game.

Thanks for the input! I'm looking at oblivion on steam right now, and they're offering two versions:Oblivion: GOTY Edition, including Knights of the Nine and the Shivering Isles expansions.OrOblivion: GOTY Deluxe, including Knights of the Nine and the Shivering Isles expansions plus Fighter's Stronghold Expansion, Spell Tome Treasures, Vile Lair, Mehrune's Razor and much more.Prices are $19.99 and $24.99, respectively. Is all that additional DLC worthwhile? Thanks again!
8/20/2011 12:44:04 AM
The additions to the 24.99 version aren't that great, but if it's only $5 difference, go for it.
8/20/2011 12:50:07 AM
For 5 bucks, fuck yeah. Don't be a puss.
8/20/2011 12:50:12 AM
Get the $20 version, its fine, the other shit you probably will not even notice its there once you pay for it unless you are a evil mage nerd or something.I think I am about to get Morrowind.[Edited on August 20, 2011 at 12:53 AM. Reason : /]

Morrowind and Oblivion were awesome. Be really careful who you kill in Morrowind. It's easy to make a bad decision and sink your battleship. There's another bug in it to keep in mind also.It was too easy to become God in Morrowind and Oblivion, but if the gimping of characters between Fallout 3 and Fallout: NV is an indicator that won't be a problem.[Edited on August 20, 2011 at 3:48 PM. Spell Tomes are nice and one of those places cures your Vampirism for no cost.
8/20/2011 4:30:28 PM
Picked up Oblivion this morning, and I'm already hooked Still getting the hang of things, but so far it's excellent, and I'm looking forward to figuring out more of it as I go along. On a sidenote, is there any quick way to get lockpicks, or boost my lockpicking ability for that matter? I got the version with the DLC, and from what I've read, it's driving the bug that keeps one store perpetually locked that I need to get into, and I just need to pick it during the day and I won't get a bounty, but will be able to get in and do this step in the quest. Unfortunately, it's a difficulty of "hard" and I'm out of picks now. Ideas?/thread-derailing
