Fuck.Hate to hear about that--Sylvio is a super nice guy, always made you feel welcome and he remembered me when I'd show back up periodically after eating there a lot in probably 2002-05. Much better pizza than I <3 NY. Never ate at Amore's enough to really have an opinion, but in any case, sucks that it's gone.
12/10/2010 1:39:07 PM
here is every other post in this thread:wow it sucks that they're closingthat guy always recognized me when i'd come in after not having eaten there in five years
12/10/2010 1:46:16 PM
12/10/2010 1:47:45 PM
^^Maybe because all of that is true and we all shared a collective experience with Sylvia's.Fuck you buddy, and the high horse you rode in on too.
12/10/2010 1:59:32 PM
amore's pizza has sucked since they reopened, sylvias was always great
12/10/2010 2:01:56 PM
No, Frosh makes a good point. I was part of the problem. I used to eat there all the time, then once I moved into a different job on campus, I had less occasion to eat on Hillsborough. And so I didn't find myself going there very often. This is why we can't have nice things.
12/10/2010 2:16:32 PM
if students would ever patronize local business -- instead of eating all their meals either on campus like dorks or going to chains -- these places could survive and flourish.in my years at State, and comparing what i've seen at many other universities (UNC, Washington, Oregon, Arizona, Ohio State, Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin, Pittsburgh, GWU, etc) it is clear that NCSU students are some of the lamest bunch at getting off campus and supporting local businesses beyond the typical shitty bars.NCSU students are the reason Hillsborough Street sucks.[Edited on December 10, 2010 at 2:43 PM. ^ and parkingand the fact that no one lives behind Hillsborough St
12/10/2010 2:50:08 PM
That's REALLY fucking sad! He always went out of his way to make a personal connection to his customers, and I SERIOUSLY enjoyed his pizza, and he had one of the biggest hearts of any business owner that i have ever encountered. Has his placed closed already or is it closing like next week?
12/10/2010 2:59:00 PM
Only ate there a handful of times. The food and the people were always nice, and it sucks to see a small business close down. Though I doubt I'd ever have eaten there again, as I am practically never in Raleigh anymore. I would like to know what is going in it's place though.
12/10/2010 3:01:30 PM
I wonder if Sylvias would have survived if the street renovation was completed 5 years ago?? I hope he was able to save a little away, but im TRULY going to miss eating lunch at that place and I never say that about random mom/pop businesses. Best wishes to you Sylvia, whatever your do with your future man!
12/10/2010 3:02:27 PM
If there was more student housing on Hillsborough it would help things a lot.
12/10/2010 3:07:10 PM
yeah, north is nearby but sylvias is a damn hike from sullivan, lee, and bragaw

Goddamnit Froshkiller I love you and all but I made this thread for mourning, not hating, son*.*have to get my Saab in there.Whether or not Amore's overpriced hipsterville cocktail lounge pizza is better wasn't really my goal. There's plenty of other whiny pizza threads.Any H-boro business shutting down is a big deal and should BE MOURNED APPROPRIATELY**except Time-Out fuck them.Asterisk alert.
12/10/2010 5:06:26 PM
I don't think I've ever eaten pizza that I would call bad. I will devour the shittiest grocery store brand frozen pizza and still enjoy it.
12/10/2010 5:30:28 PM
you must not have eaten pizzamerica then
12/10/2010 5:35:03 PM
summary: nice guy, great memories, mediocre pizzaeven though it was mediocre, I still ate there all the time
12/10/2010 5:55:23 PM

12/10/2010 5:59:17 PM
im not too proud to admit that i like the 'I love NY' pizzaactually liked it better than the slices that Sylvia's would always reheat (when I did go to sylvia's i got the stromboli)
12/10/2010 6:01:09 PM

Did the construction destroy any other Hillsborough Street mainstays?
12/10/2010 9:40:40 PM
I talked to the yuppie owners of the building.Silvio wasn't paying rent so they kicked him out. They're opening a Hot Box. Which is apparently a pizza chain I've never heard of.http://www.gethotboxpizza.com/
12/11/2010 3:03:02 AM
tldr sylvias was the one with the italian dude and the basil garden in front within slaiva/siggerette butt range? this one time i smack a bouncer at one of those bars down by cup a joes and then run into him at sylvias the next day. was luls

12/11/2010 12:00:26 PM
count me as another who will miss that place, it wasn't awe-inspiring but it was better than I love NY and you couldn't beat the 2 slices and a drink for $3.99, though i don't remember than lasting very long.So what is hotbox pizza?
12/11/2010 12:03:58 PM
i don't get the hate for NY pizza. I <3 the rio ranchero pizza. Good stuff.
12/11/2010 12:40:26 PM
gumby's is even better than I <3 NY
12/11/2010 12:42:07 PM
12/11/2010 12:43:48 PM
Haha farmhouse pizza was the fucking worst. People say there's no such thing as bad pizza, but that was bad pizza.
12/11/2010 12:45:26 PM
Isn't Gumby's on Hillsborough St, and Papa John's moved tp Western Blvd?
12/11/2010 12:47:09 PM
^This.
12/11/2010 12:57:21 PM
They're putting another pizza place in that spot?! I mean cmon wtf? Hillsborough Street sucks as it is because there aren't enough options. It's even worse when a third of the businesses on the street are pizza joints. No variety whatsoever.
12/11/2010 12:57:50 PM
there is also mexican, mediteranian, burgers, chinese, korean, sushi, and american dining[Edited on December 11, 2010 at 1:25 PM. Reason : no variety at all!]
